Yesterday I tried out a newly acquired Primo Jr. 4x4 with a roll of expired Portra. It had a film of oil on the rear taking lens element that gave a soft-focus look to every frame. Mostly I disliked them, but this one seems to work. I've since cleaned the lens....

Thank you Toyo, do you know, at that time - in 1984 - I didn't know A.A. work, never have seen a photo made by him at that time. So, double thanks!
When I was living in Paris, in the 1980's years - where I begun to work with photo professionally - I was exposed mainly to big names of the European scene, and the only Americans I knew were Stieglitz (because his connection with Armory Show in NYC and the fact that he brought to USA all the modern painters from EU to his gallery, and Man Ray, for his connection with the Surrealist Movement. Go figure, the other day a member from this forum have visited a expo in Chicago with the work of Lazlo Moholy-Nagi and commented that he didn't know the man, and Moholy-Nagi was the director of the Photography Area at Bauhaus school of Art in Germany post-WWII - one of the most important schools of art in the world, from where a real revolution in Architecture and Design was born.
The Americans and Europeans were slowly in the process of getting out of their centric vision to discover each other, and I was catch by that trap too.
More work at that time, in Paris and Sao Paulo/Brazil, where I was born:

Very interesting technique!
It was a mistake of course (and I've fixed it since) but it's an old trick. Smearing grease (usually Vaseline--I'm not sure why) was a tried and true way of achieving soft focus. I guess they did it on a piece of optical flat glass in front of the lens, though, rather than on the lens itself!

Tuco, the S7 has the option to shoot in raw with a jpg. However, you have to set it every time by going into pro mode. I usually forget...I wish it would remember the last mode you were in and stay there the next time you open the camera. The camera is 12mp. 4000X3000 so there is a lot of information to work with on the jpg.

Yep, P40, also used by the RAAF in Africa I think.

A scene I have photographed numerous times throughout 2016. Sometimes different lenses, sometimes film, and sometimes digital. Always a slight variance in the play between light and shadow. Jeff, the photo from yesterday has such a compelling feel to it. The glow of the metal and tones have such a great feeling to them. However, I'm trying to figure out what it is? Haha. I'm guessing part of an airplane?

Dennis - Thank you. That is a propeller and hub assembly from a C-130A. It is one of many residing in an aircraft "boneyard" in central Arizona. The tire provides some cushion to help prevent damage and it is resting on top of a large cargo container.

Scott - Your kind comments are sincerely appreciated. Those are "leading edge" sections of a C-130A wing. In fact, they are resting on top of and next to a C-130A wing. Below is a photo of one of the three derelict C-130A's in the yard. I spend a lot of time there photographing the many parts that are scattered throughout the yard. I've got five rolls of Fuji Acros from my last trip that I need to process. For me, it is a wonderful place to photograph with a seemingly endless series of compositions. I could wear my Hasselblad out in a place like this.

So today my son's elf showed up, but in a jar so he could show him around the house as you can't touch an elf 'cause the would loose there magic. Here he is showing him the lights.
Thank you Dennis and Renato! My 1st pro SLR camera was a used Canon EOS 1D (back in 2004) so having this is like going back to the roots and starting the way I should have, with Analog :) I also have the Canon 5D MKII with the vertical grip so it's nice to be able to switch between the two bodies with identical controls.
What's most impressive (and useless for me) is that this camera shoots 10 FPS! I tested it without film and it sounds pretty awesome - haha :)

Pali

I went for a walk this evening. It was nice to get outside byself in the quiet for an hour after being indoor with noisy people all day. It was about 15-20f which is OK as long as it's not windy. It took me about 20 minutes walking before I could figure out what could be photographed with the moon up high like the daytime sun. It's easier when the moon is low or gone. Maybe I just needed that time to get my blood flowing and become relaxed.
I used the Sigma 50/1.4 hsm non-art. The Nikon 1.4 would be peppered with green junk from internal reflections when bright lights are in the photo. This is a 3-shot lightroom HDR just to get the tones into one photo. The moon glows with some color around it when ice/snow is in the atmosphere but not enough to cause precipitation. We'll get some of that tomorrow.

Visited my daughter in Austin, TX over Christmas, and following some sage advice (pun, folks!) from Austin resident and frequent poster, Scott Schroeder, wandered around with my "little camera," a Sony A7. Also copying Scott, who mounted an older Pentax lens on his digital, I tried using my old Leica Summicron 50/2, wide open. In the uniquely Texan approach to Christmas decorations, I came across a few Christmas Agave cacti. I kind of liked the muted colors, so these are straight from the camera, a little cropping the only adjustments:

An updated picture of AgOMatic II - my BW film agitation machine. Back in Jan 2007 I started thinking what it would take to build this version of AgOMatic. By June of 2007 I had a prototype to start working on the software. I got this version completed by the end of 2007. So almost 10 years later it's a little worse for wear with fixer stains and all but it's still working.

Looked it up. Total Diy or was it a kit /list deal? Silver oxide or is the O just for the matic?
A total DIY project with home made single layer circuit boards. It has lots of network capability including a wireless access point. My first AgOMatic was built in 1995 on a budget using an AC motor and controlled via the parallel port from a computer. This version I spent considerably more money and used a stepper motor with a serial controller. All high level solution components so all I had to do is integrate them. The name is a spoof from an old TV commercial. Ag is for silver. Here is a video making it:

Thanks. No, it doesn't load the film. It only agitates it. That's not much of a task but enough to free me up to do other things especially when one of my developers needs to be agitated every 15 seconds.

Really nice so far Austin - I love the xpan concept, I want one myself! I was a little sad to see you selling your Noblex camera so glad you are still in the game so to speak with that aspect ratio (of course very different results vs. swinging lens camera).

You're rocking that XPan, Austin!
austin granger
12-Jan-2017, 12:10
Thanks Bryan. The Noblex gives great results for sure, but I just never got along with it and it caused me a lot of frustration. I also wanted something I could reasonably carry into the mountains and such. There are always compromises, aren't there? What I'd really like is an upsized, medium format XPan, but made with exotic materials so that it's not any heavier. And magically not any bigger. Is that asking too much? :-)
Thanks Pete! The camera store by my house had this XPan on consignment for months, and every time I was near there, I'd stop by and visit it. I'd even peer through the window on my late night walks to make sure it was still there. And then, right before this Palouse trip, I broke down and went and bought it. It was like adopting a puppy I'd gotten to know.

Thanks Leigh, I agree. The highlight on the left, in the steel bowl, misbehaved when I tried a brighter rendering. There are several negatives of this image, and this is the best executed of the group. The image was taken years ago when my technical skills were not what they are now. Maybe something more can be coaxed out of the picture... :)

The eggs and steel bowl b&w image is very nice, though a touch dark. (Maybe it needs to be that way, I still like it very much as is.). Composition is also very attractive.
My comment about being dark is a very subjective opinion. Alfred Stieglitz made plenty of dark imagses !
