Back to the beach last night, but I wasn't brave enough to risk messing it up again with an experimental process. This Pan F was developed the standard way, in HC-110. F6, 28-300 (I thought a questionable lens might give me more flare), X1 scans:

Could you put into words what you like about this image?
Sure!
I enjoy the brightness, which seems accentuated by the enforced by the texture of the pavement and the high key bokeh.
I enjoy the mirrored gestures of the marionette and the Girl. I enjoy the ambiguity of scale between the two.
I enjoy the light on the strings of the marionette to help define and explain the object.
I think I might crop out some of the bottom.
Ken; Keep it up!

Still looking through recent negatives to print. I found some photos from Washington DC that I wanted to print, specifically from the Air & Space Museum. This place is my favorite thing in DC.
I've run out of most of my paper but I have a couple boxes of 16x20 paper left so I cut a bunch in half to 10x16, perfect for 35mm prints to about 9.5 x 14.

Thanks. Don't go during this time of year. Smoke and haze from a fire in Canada made it all the way down to this place. I used a digital filter in post to help cut through it but it gave the Painted Hills a painted look. You're not suppose to walk out in the area so your compositions are going to be from paths and the edges of the area to a large part. So bring a telephoto too.

An experiment:
These were taken with old Takumar SMC 50mm 1.4 adapted to the D300. Both shot wide open at 1.4, both with the Olympus B300 1.7x converter mounted in front of the lens, one with, and one without a Zeiss Softar II filter between the Tak and Oly.
I'm not sure which I like, especially since the ideal subject for this combo would be people. But still, it was a fun thing to do after the rain.
This is the first digital stuff I've posted in a while, but do have a Canon adapter coming to try this with 35mm film next month.

Yes, I took these some time apart as more things occurred to me so the clouds were thinner when I added the filter. Overall I was surprised the effect of the filter was so subtle. I've used it on the Sigma 30 1.4 and found it to be too much usually. Maybe sandwiching the filter between the lens proper and extender made a difference. The real test will be when I get a face to shoot and also when I shoot the rig on 35mm I think.

The different color temperatures of the stars is interesting. I'm not use to seeing the celestial pole so low on the horizon.
I've given up plans on going to the Painted Hills for an eclipse picture. The effort and possible smoke from forest fires just doesn't seem worth it. Instead I'm going to visit some relatives in Oregon that are close to the path and just watch it and maybe find a spot for a photo.
The perspective is a bit exaggerated as I was at the bottom of a small hill and low to the ground, but yeah I suppose it's still rather low compared to your latitude! Good luck on the eclipse - I've got my spot picked out, a lesser-known south view on the Appalachian Trail. I'm just hoping the weather holds out.

All great Pali. This one works best for me. Starting to be a nice time of year in the northeastern/mid-Atlantic US.
Thank you Chassis! I love how Provia renders the morning light colors. You can see it get warm and cool depending on if its being shot in direct sunlight or shade.
Pali
Nice ones Pali. Still jealous of the XPan... :)
A few months ago I bought a bunch of expired 35mm slide film. In the lot was a bunch of "Fujifilm MS 100/1000" film, which I had never heard of before. Supposedly it can be shot between ISO 100 and 1000, with appropriate development. Finally got around to testing it out recently and I love the saturated colors with somewhat softer contrast than Provia and Velvia. Here's two shots I made with my F5 and 200mm Micro at a local garden:
http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/gibbsf5-8178ss.jpg http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/gibbsf5-8199ss.jpg
And here's something else I shot this evening. I've been meaning to try this with a Nikonos I picked up a few months ago. I shot this straddling the water line at my favorite local state park that I shoot a lot at.
Nikonos IV, 35mm f/2.5, TMX, FX-39:
http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/nikonos-8253ss.jpg
Need to try this more, and maybe with the 15mm that I also got in the water fully. And probably with less turbulent areas!

Bryan, The plane of focus on the water lili's is nice. How do the MS 100/1000 slides themselves look? the results here are certainly nice. Did you shoot any at the High ISO yet?
Try more with the Nikonos! I was super excited to get an underwater 110 camera, unfortunatly all the 110 I have shot has been extremely fogged so I havn't actually seen the pictures I made =[ The turbulance does add an interesting mystique... 'soft focus/glow' ;)
~nicholas
The slides are admittedly a bit color shifted towards blue/magenta. Kind of purplish. Easy to correct in the scan though.
This was actually my second roll - the first I ended up trying out at a middling ISO of 400 with a long development. It looked okay but not great. I'm not sure I would bother trying again. Also in the lot of slide film was a 100' roll of Provia 400 (!!) that is in surprisingly good shape so I am set for fast slide film...which I don't really use anyway ;). I actually might ditch that for something I'm more likely to use since people are paying a lot for Provia 400 on eBay.
Anyway, thanks! I might go out with the Nikonos again today or tomorrow and try again. I did find out last night my 15mm is somewhat broken :( though it's still kind of usable...the aperture changes when the focus knob is moved for some reason, but the aperture knob still works too so you can reset the aperture to the proper place. I have no idea how the linkages got intertwined like that. Should've noticed when I purchased, oh well.

A digital version of my film shot of the event. You hardly get a second chance but I played it safe with shutter speed trying for the diamond ring at the expense of high ISO and tonal scale.
Three jets chasing the eclipse left contrails in the scene. One did a big, sweeping U-turn right in the area but it dissipated in time.

Nice color on the above. My M9 is at Leica for a sensor replacement...quoted 6-9 months lead time for repair :(. Do you have a replacement sensor already?

Thanks. No I don't think so. Its sensor could use a good cleaning though. Its hard to clean it with all those prisms or whatever they are on it.
I hope your sensor doesn't fail then! Leica issued a limited replacement policy, but just recently on August 15th stopped the program. There's an issue with the sensor that causes corrosion on the IR filter. Apparently it is caused by moisture, and the high humidity down here did it to mine. They are replacing the sensor on mine free though as part of the warranty service. Don't wet clean the sensor, it may cause problems!

I heard about it. But I thought I'd wait until it was a problem. I didn't know they discontinued the replacement policy. That sucks.

Tuco, your shot is beautiful! The cross and eclipse reminds me of my own pic, but with way more intensity and impact than mine. I hope you don't mind the comparison. I just got back from watching the eclipse in Albany Oregon. Magical experience, but I think I was mislead by the fake news about the path of totality. I think the path is way wider than they let on. You can still see it if you're in the right place at the right time. This is my best shot, taken a few minutes after it was supposedly over and done ...

I love mantids...I actually kept one as a pet when I was little. I've always found them to be very sociable insects. They will crawl right up on my hand if given a chance. This one was very curious of the camera. At one point he started reaching out towards me and when I moved in a little closer he climbed right up onto my lens! I put it down to grab a pic with my cell phone but he hopped off then. Oh well. Shot with a Nikon D800E and 200mm Micro.

Cool Bryan. I have one in my raspberry patch. Interesting insects, for sure.
Yeah they are fascinating to me. Once when I was younger I saw a female that was on a sunflower. It was as large as the entire sunflower head...huge! When I approached she hopped off and flew away a few hundred feet - the sight and sound of it was amazing.
I took some macro video of him as well which can be found HERE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeLT8gi_N5o). Looking online I think it is a Carolina mantis.

Nice one tuco. One of my younger cousins a few years ago seemed interested in photography and maybe film but that dried up pretty quickly. I have a nephew now after getting married who loves my cameras and whenever he grabs one of the family's little digital p&s cameras he holds it up to his face trying to look through a viewfinder like he sees me doing all the time. He's just now in 1st grade but in a few more years I might need to give him one of my Pentax K1000s sitting around here :).

Thanks Tuco. I just had a stream of thoughts that kicked off from your comment. So I'll share in case some of y'all relate:
I think in my 'stage' of taking photographs there are moments or even hours that I see photographs everywhere. I don't mean a universal photograph, just the ones that have met a feeling that I enjoy. I appreciate photographers who see photographs from their own unique vision. In its rawest form, it's a feeling that connects with our deepest soul. We found that feeling and so we yearn to find it again and again. These are the 'real' personal tastes. The ones we take solely on our own, not giving a damn about what others think. It's the ones we connect with because we created something innately connected to our deepest strengths. It's a boon to our mental state of comfort. It's a full release. We can just absorb the freedom, feel the freedom and for a short while live it.

Well the 5D works for me EXCEPT the dynamic range when I need it. I had a friend send me some d810 photos with details in a bright sky with clouds and in the deep shadows. It had me wanting to upgrade but the cost is too steep for me. It's nice to see advancements like that.

Once the D850 gets into more people's hands the D810/D800e will be very affordable. Many of the pro grade DSLRs of recent years have great improvement in dynamic range. It's something they compete on or atleast endear photographers with since the megapixel race isn't everything.

Thanks. I was figuring that would happen with a new model coming out. I wonder if my super tak lenses could be adapted to nikon. I agree about megapixels. My phone has as many as the 5d... Dynamic range is more important to me than fps or any of the other improvements. Higher iso is nice because I hate flash...

Yeah Jim is it quite grainy which is the only reason I use 35mm for the grit. A change of pace from grainless 8x10 I normally use. I enjoy the different formats for very different reasons.

Thanks jp! Yes, the drive to get to that point was pretty torturous (especially in a rented mini-van) and at first I was disappointed that it was so smoky. Honestly though, the picture probably turned out more interesting than it would have otherwise. Thanks again.
