Kinda boring composition, but it accurately shows the peaceful splendor of an evening at the lake. Needs something a little wider than my 24-85.

I went to St. Mark's Wildlife Refuge yesterday but it was a pretty crappy day to shoot - hot, humid, hazy, and the yellow flies were just ferocious. I wanted to see some Roseate Spoonbills that are there but I was out of luck. They were sighted about an hour before I got there and then disappeared. I hiked 3-4 miles around the pond they were at with no luck. I bagged a few boring shots but this was the only decent shot of the day:

Nikon F5, 300mm f/2.8, Superia 200:
http://www.oceanstarproductions.com/photosharing/f52-2234ss.jpg

Also, I just uploaded a video on my YT channel linked below showing a few more photos and video from the day. I had my GoPro attached to the hot-shoe on the F5, which makes for a funny video with my lens sticking out like a cannon from below.

Having a blast with a new-to-me IR camera bought via the forum here. This is on Monroe Island off Owls Head. It's fairly wild. I think I'd like to get left here for a day sometime soon with some LF gear. I shot a few rolls of B&W 120 too as I did not know how much luggage I'd get to bring along. I will be back. It's an island in town I'd never been to till last year when I visited the other end of the island. I grew up lobstering in the water near the island and never visited as it was off limits. Now, mita.org provides some stewardship and permission for no-impact visiting of this and many other islands. After I get some LF stuff scanned, I'll start scanning in my 120 film from here for flickr.

I have a small film freezer in my garage. It was time to de-ice it. These undeveloped exposed rolls are about 15+ year old. At the time I didn't think the pictures were worth developing. I might develop that previous generation of TXP but I don't have much hope for the color ones. Anyway I tossed a setup together for them.

This one just about landed on me. It settled on the leaf pictured. It stayed long enough for me to eyeball it closely, sans camera. It stayed long enough for me to walk inside and get the camera. I took a few shots and realized the macro would be better. It stayed yet longer so I could go back inside. After this shot I walked around the yard looking for other subjects. Thirty minutes later it was still there but with its wings open. I got a couple more shots from the back of its backlit wings. As long as it was there I could have gotten the 4x5 setup with the 120 macro. Wish I would have known.

Yes and there was a lot of early morning haze (especially this time of year) that you can see in the color shot too.

My workflow is scan the image disregarding what it looks like on the sceen using 16-bit BW in the ProPhoto RGB color space. I adjust the scanning software parameters by looking at its histogram to grab as much density off the negative as the scanner will do (often it looks pretty flat and dull). I import it to Lightroom. I then export from LR to Photoshop to clean any dust ( I didn't photograph the dust so I remove it) because the content aware healing tool is way better than in Lightroom. I save and go back to Lightroom where I will adjust the final contrast curve to taste, do any cropping, any toning, add any vignetting or remove it and then sometimes mild geometry corrections for convergence/divergence.

Thanks for the details Garrett. I really enjoy shooting with older/vintage glass. While my collection is very modest, I can see it expanding over the next couple of years. The unique rendering really makes them fun to use and the images they help produce are often compelling. Glad to see you enjoy visiting PASM. A favorite local of mine also. This Rollei film is so malleable that I could shoot under tungsten light and get great colors in the scan. I've not been able to do that with Portra.

Thanks Marty and tuco!

Speaking of musical performances, I shot some images before and during a symphony concert I was recording last weekend at a different venue just for fun, with my Leica III and 5cm f/2 Summitar, on Tri-X:

The musical performances continue. Sorry for spamming the thread!

This time it was the marching band. I decided to do something a little different/fun. I rigged up my 38mm XL onto a 2x3 Crown Graphic, fixed at hyperfocal, and stuffed a roll of 35mm into the 6x7 220 back. I used a 6x17 viewfinder (75mm) to frame. Here's a shot of the band playing in the stands:

Here's one of the actual game, converted to b&w because I liked it better:

So I had this idea that I wanted the moon and stars and glittering ocean and/or creamy ocean in one photo. Sort of a mix of steichen and starry night. But normal conditions do not allow that as when the moon is out, the stars are hidden by the moonlight. The eclipse last night allowed me to achieve that by sufficiently darkening the moon. Got a little aurora color in the photos as well. It was so dark I didn't have any sensation of color or place or dimension and I was perched on an uneven rock and had to keep touching the tripod to know I wasn't going to fall down.

Corran
14-Oct-2015, 07:19
Yeah it is stupid wide. Very hard to shoot, which is why I don't use it a whole lot. If you don't get really up close to something it just looks stupid - for instance that tree in the first photo looks kinda far away but I'm actually only like a few inches away from it.

The 12mm is actually slightly wider on the horizontal side (due to aspect ratio) than the 47mm XL on 4x5.

Oh, and Voigtlander recently announced a 10mm full-frame lens! Insane.

So I threw a bid out there.
Well, I now have a super tak 85/1.9
So far it seems to be exposing correctly and I can go to infinity without issue on the 5D.
I'm looking forward to it on my trip.

Here's one wide open and as close as I could get.
It was dim so the iso is up there somewhere. And I should probably use a tripod!

Flickr has a control to disable downloading, but it' easy to get around; just view all sizes, pick the big size, then right click, "inspect element", find the jpg and click on the URL and you've got it full size to download.
If you don't want full size photos downloaded, downsize them before putting them on the Internet.

I've never owned the 100/6.3, but I do have a very early (low 4-digit serial) 50/3.5. Perhaps I should try it out, I only bought it to pair with the camera, and I've stopped shooting 35mm. The camera is a little rough around the edges, but it is of much better construction than later examples. Perhaps the early lenses are also of superior quality?

Scott, these are knockouts (as usual). I presume the welded-on Super Tak 50/1.4. I have mine in an EOS film camera and am waiting to finish the first roll - a disadvantage compared to digital. One difficulty I have is that the camera has a crappy screen and I can't see focus clearly. It's an EOS 300/Rebel 2000, and brilliant at autofocus and auto exposure, but it doesn't have a microprism or split image component to the screen, so visual focusing is very hit and miss. I'm saving up for an EOS 1n. Lovely work.

Thanks Renato,
I haven't shot LF "film" in many years. The only LF I shoot nowadays is wet plate collodion. I do shoot 35mm film and develop in pyro. I love the results. I also love the results of my 5D. I suppose preservation is not something I'm concerned with. My "filing" and organization system for photography is incredibly inconsistent. I guess a few years back I decided I just want to photograph and not dwell to much on other stuff. I found a good combination of camera, lens and processing that meets my vision and how I feel. So I spend less time on that and more time being fascinated by all aspects of the world we live in.

Hi Scott,

I admire your vision toward photography, and have also a 5DMkII.
About preservation, when I was young, 22-25 y.o. I have spent 5 years in Europe, working at the beginning with everything I could and finally becoming a professional photographer - I always enjoyed photography. Coming home I bought with me nearby 4000 negatives in 135 film B&W, a selected material of all these years, both pro and personal material. Several months after that, I had to go back to France to work again for some months and left those negs with an aunt. Then a water flood came at her home, and destroyed everything inside, my stuff included. This event have made in me a great impact, and maybe was the reason why I abandoned the profession completely and sold everything photographic related I had.

When my daughter was born, 7 years back, I acquired a new "toy" camera, to make some shots of my first baby and the passion reignited immediately. 2 years latter, a nightmare has happened and tried to delete all my photos again, but then I had a backup disk - I was working with computer networks at that moment and knew the "shark was circling the meat", all the time...
I'm a bit paranoid now, but you know, scalded dog fears cold water,

Cheers,

Renato

They are making new land on the left to expand the river walk (https://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/cdot/supp_info/chicago_riverwalk.html). Almost everything you see is floating on water.

We are also expanding land into Lake Michigan at North ave for more parkland.

One day an airport may be built in the lake, since we converted Midway Airport to park land.

Chicago is building like crazy everywhere at once, which is good as everything stopped for years after 2008...

btw that fairly detailed image was shot with a 3.3 mm lens, f2.4 at ISO 25 which I find amazing!

Why is it softer? I could understand the tones and color relationships being a challenge in b&w though.

How do I count the ways. There are many possible errors. I was using a Wolly Raptor 90mm, maybe it's not so hot. I shot at f32, diffraction? I was on a bridge with vibration, maybe I miss guessed my hyper-focal as the scene is 1 block long and I moved in from infinity. Maybe my infinity setting is wrong. I didn't check with GG.

All that said, the scene is way better in color...

I'm going to check that Raptor against some other 90's and, who knows.

Basically I have decided to use the Travelwide for bar/street/night snaps with flashbulbs at fixed distance of either 3 or 5 feet, those shot's look great.

This dead tree surrounded by living trees is great i first thought maybe just the dead tree would make the image , but i feel the dead branches bleeding into the live trees is symbolic of hope

Along those same lines, Gary, your comment about Scott Schroeder's lovely image reminded me of this image.
It's actually from a 4x5 negative, but thought it was appropriate to add this seemingly dead "Tree of Life" as a complement to the idea of Hope you expressed about Scott's image.

Thanks for the comments. It was a very cool tree in a very cool place. It's in southern Utah just outside the maze. Area called the block. This particular part was on a bridge between two mesas.

yup, its around Caddo Lake. Its good place to go, as long as weather cooperates, and not too many people around

It's a lith print. Paper is from back then before they started tinkering with emulsion.

I thought it might be the B-36 before seeing the photo on the previous page. My favorite aircraft of all time.

I found one of the original "Art Deco" model Rolleicords from the mid '30s and just couldn't resist the funky but cool look of that camera. Turns out the shutter needs a complete overhaul and just shoots instantaneously at all speeds, so I used it as such to try it out when I was shooting at a cotton field (compare to the post in the LF Landscape thread).

Beautifully done, Ari.
The overall dark tones provide a wonderful contrast to the child's face.
Did you anticipate ("previsualize") that or see later when printing ?

Ari
1-Dec-2015, 07:56
Thank you, Dennis.
No, I didn't know what the photo would look like in the end, it was a question of finding the right mood and contrast, as well as an effective way of separating her from everything else.
I did my usual "dodge the face and other visible skin" thing, then went through some trial-and-error adjustments.
But it's a digital photo printed on an Epson; the grunt work was done in PS and LR.

Thanks, Ari.
Nothing wrong with LR /PS. You achieved an interesting mood and lovely quality in the image.

Scott,
That's a great image in your post 10497. The lack of scale makes it even more abstract and interesting.
Looks like it could also be something out of an electron microscope !
