Thanks, tuco & Pali. Normally this lake is much deeper, and the surface is choppy with strong winds, so it was unusual to come across it like this. I forgot to put my boots on and completely ruined a good pair of shoes by walking across mud & quicksand to this particular spot.

https://pre00.deviantart.net/6048/th/pre/f/2017/293/f/8/white_wall_by_rich14-dbr5w3z.jpg
White Wall, Oceanside, CA Harbor
In the San Diego area, we frequently don't get really hot summer weather until late August, September and October when the "Santa Ana" winds blow westward from the inland deserts out to sea. The relative humidity drops to single digits, the temperatures soar into triple digits, the air is so clear that details are so sharp they almost hurt your eyes.
It was the middle of October. I had gone to the harbor at about 3pm to wait for sunset - about 6:30. I wanted to get shots of the sun setting over a seawall, knowing that it would be setting at a particular point along the wall that day and, of course, there wouldn't be a cloud in the sky.
It was about 100 degrees when I got out of the car. I didn't notice the white wall across the street from the parking lot until I looked up from my camera backpack that I had just unloaded onto the side walk.
The wall is about four feet high. It's a retaining wall at the base of an almost vertical cliff of about 90 feet. It looked like light was literally bursting out of it in that searing sunlight. The left end of the wall is somewhere above Zone 10 or 11. The sun was at the perfect angle, sending raking light across the textured wall surface, throwing "hills and valleys" of the texture into stark relief and exaggerating the detail. The grasses behind the wall are in an almost vertical plane just a foot or so back and don't require much depth of field to stay in the plane of focus.
I got my camera onto the tripod, not having time to even extend the legs. I sat on the ground getting a few shots.
In a few more seconds, the direction of sunlight had moved to just behind the plane of the wall, and the face of the wall was thrown into shadow and became fairly featureless.
I like the small strip of red-painted curb intruding into the edge of the scene. The painter was sloppy with his spray and got paint on the wall and on the left-over rebar coming out of the foundation. Guess he never learned to color within the lines in Kindergarten.
(The wall curves away from camera position and starts uphill to the right. I thought of "straightening" the image, but then the left end looked wrong)

I'm trying to get good 35mm shots, but just can't seem to match LF with them. I can with digitial, sadly. I'm sure my darkroom and dev and exposure techniques are not that great. But I remember getting some great shots on 35mm as a student, in the 1980s. Some I printed as 8x10 and they still look great today. What happened? I have no clue. But this is the best off a roll of T-max, with a Leica M3 and Summicron DR. I'm just not impressed.

What is it about the image that you don't like? How did you capture this file? Is it a scan of a print or of the B&W negative? The lighting is somewhat flat.
To me it is lacking in mid-tone contrast and separation. If it's a print, it needs a higher contrast paper or filter or correction during scanning. If it's a straight scan, it needs correction at that stage.
What are the technical details of the shot? (f/stop, shutter speed?)
My take would be like this:

Peter, those last two color images are just beautiful!
I see fewer mid tones compared to the OP's version on my monitor.
Tuco,
I'm not sure anything can really be decided from viewing a monitor image of this size as to wether there are more or less mid-tone values visible before or after the small "curves" adjustment I made. After all, I was working with an 8 bit jpeg and my resulting image was just to demonstrate increased mid-tone contrast, which I thought was lacking in the first image.
If the OP has the original in 16 bit form, making the adjustment at that level will not only improve mid-tone contrast and separation, but will maintain as many "real" (as opposed to synthetic or interpolated) mid-tone values as before the adjustment when the image is prepared for display on a monitor or print, which results in transformation to final 8 bit format.

This evening was an event down at one of the Atlanta area colleges called "Owl-O-Ween." Lots of cool stuff to see - billed as Atlanta's largest costume party, but has lots of performers doing acrobatics and such.
I brought along a lens that stays in my bag way too much - my Nikkor 135mm f/2 DC. Did some experimenting with the defocus control, aka "soft focus."
Here's full-on soft focus:

I've had a quiet week for recreational Internet use. No power or Internet since Monday morning. 13 trees have fallen into our road and power lines ahead of my house and a few trees on the road/power lines past my house. We had a very strong wet wind from the South, which my neighborhood faces the ocean unprotected. Actually half the state has been without power for much of the week. Might have power again tomorrow. It's above freezing, so no serious risks from the outage.

Nice work, Chrism. I've used a fair amount of XP-2 Super in 120. It's an excellent film that scans very well.

Nicholas - I started a thread a few months ago at APUG with the details and examples (here (https://www.photrio.com/forum/threads/ilford-xp2-super-in-b-w-chemicals.145287/)).
I use HC-110 1+49 at 20ºC, for the following times:
EI 100 4 minutes
EI 200 6.5 minutes
EI 400 10 minutes
EI 800 13.5 minutes
EI 1600 18 minutes
EI 3200 24 minutes
3200 is very unreliable, and any underexposure will mean a blank negative: there's no latitude left down at the toe of the curve. Otherwise all speeds seem to work fine.

Pentax 645 lenses got a bit expensive when the digital cameras came out (we will politely ignore the fact that they are not capable of a 6cm x 4.5cm image). The f4/120mm is quite versatile, and copes well with portraits:

Nice, at first I thought it was PA, by your home location. Yet, I have seen similar sites in PA. A long time ago I lived beside the Schuylkill, a near creek was that size. Full of eels. I liked the abandoned canals with pull paths. I found my old home, a servants stone house marked 1789, on Google maps.
I just like snow...had our first 2" here today.

Enjoyed my trip through Massachusetts en route to Detroit a few years back on a business trip,Now Detroit was another story ....... , Sad to see this once thriving community , So run down (i believe it is improving)during that trip in new Hampshire i believe i was when i saw a reference to your work and you were were doing a showing from memory , Couldn't make it as i think it was a week past or so when i read it Anyway.(the details are a bit vague) as i can't remember what town i was in , Only that it was well known for it's lakes which were a fair distance from actual town . have missed you on the the 5x7 forum are you shooting much LF these days? Enjoying your digital work anyway . CheersGary

Thanks Gary: I've shot very little film over the last year.
I finally figured out how to configure my digital camera to preview the image in black and white: this can help prevent shots which appear promising in color but disappoint in monochrome.
At this point I am waiting for the muses to call me back under the dark cloth.

Ken, wonderful shot. Does the typewriter work, do you use it?
Thank you. My son restores classic typewriters, particularly those from England: when he's done they work well and look better than new. They have a certain intangible quality like restored vintage automobiles.
I swore off taking photographs of typewriters but when this rare model showed up with crinkle-coat paint, I had to give it a try
Ken, I always like the typewriter images. I was going through my old computer stuff to find things to photograph, having been inspired to make a series of said items, and your image style is inspiring me to try shooting an old Commodore 64 keyboard similarly.

h20man; love that last photo!
I went the beach this morning and my eyeballs hurt trying to keep them open long enough to finely focus the Rolleiflex. It wasn't because of sun but because of cold. I took along a regular DSLR too as I knew I wouldn't want to be changing film in such cold. The actual temperature was below 0f and there was some windchill exposure to add to the cold.

Leigh - it's the way the plaster has been applied that gives that particular texture. I think it photographs well, and would work well as a background in other kinds of photographs. I like it so much, that the walls of our apartment have been done in a similar way.

My mom raised and hand-fed cockatiels when I was young, and later moved on to various parrots, such as caiques and green cheeks among other types that I can't remember. Since the young birds need feeding every hour or two, she had to bring them to our Christmas festivities in Mississippi. In Nevada it's still common to hear folks call this pogonip.
That explains it - I have a book called "At Mono Lake," and one of the images in it is titled "Mono Basin Under Poconip Fog." I never knew what that meant. I see that the spelling in the book is incorrect, and your's is correct, Jim.
