Excellent, Jason. And the warm color of light on the swimmer implies a story about a nice warm campfire waiting on the shore after a day of canoeing or hiking.

Thanks guys.. it is a bit pictorial, and yes there was a fire on shore providing some warm glow. I guess the story is in the picture.

I tried a couple photos on a tripod and lighting my daughter with a LED flashlight as she looked a little too red on the viewfinder. But they were sharp where they didn't need to be, and the light was not cozy or natural due to my other daughter not really painting the correct foreground spots and the LED being too cool a color. Once I got home and imported the photos, the one above seemed simplest and ideal.

Austin; I enjoy this batch of travel photos. Nice and abstract and bright sunlight is different for you, but worked out well.

I badgered Lomography for a while and they finally sent me a replacement for the Motorizer I bought several months ago, for the "Dolphin" Spinner camera. All I needed was a replacement for a bad remote but apparently they have no spares so they finally just sent me a whole unit to shut me up.

Tried it out today and what do you know, horrid banding across the entire image. What a piece of garbage. Might try lubing up the rubber band that spins the cartridge and see if I get a bit smoother action, but more likely it's the internal mechanism that isn't smooth.

Here's one image:

Ken, this has a notable sense of movement in it, due in part, I think, to the vertical opposition of the clouds and dark sky band. The lower, with is powerful dimensionality, appears to be closer to us at first, but then a dynamic ensues between them. Well done.

This is a test of Ilford HP5+ processed in PMK Pyro. Camera used was my Minolta Autocord, which I prefer over most of my other 6X6 cameras for its exquisite rendering of fine detail.
These negs are very interesting: rich and broad in their retention of dark shadows and highlights, even though some were quite a bit overexposed. (I was told to overexpose negs for PMK processing, up to two stops over: I bracketed)

Looks good.

Overexpose? So if you place your shadows, say, 3 stops below your middle gray as your normal metering and you over expose a stop you just moved your shadow up to 2 stops below your middle gray.

Thank you :-)
I wish my Autocord cost that little (It was about $250 five years ago), but I am still very pleased with that investment, as the camera was in great shape and needed no CLA of any sort: I suspect it had been fully serviced not long before I bought it. Its one of my favorite cameras in terms of image performance. Its not as nicely engineered as, say, the Rolleiflex, but I prefer the output over the Rolleiflex. I ended up selling my Rolleiflex last spring to pay for a 100mm Kodak Wide Field Ektar for the Deardorff: no regrets!

Wonderful image, Paul!
Never heard about the overexposure for pyro - or is it just the PMK treatment? Which of the bracketed images this is? +2?

Curiously, I found that when exposing Bergger Pancro400 in 8x10 format, I need to expose it at about 100 ASA, but with this roll of HP5+, it seems the +2 exposures are excessive and unnecessary. I would say that with HP5+ at least, there's no need to overexpose more than one stop, which is in fact my normal approach to this film.

Wonderful image, Paul!

I will need to find the source of that recommendation again before I can tell you much. I have the Photographers Formulary version of PMK and its possible I read that in their instructions.
This is the +1 frame, I believe.

Along the same lines as the previous image, I tested a "new" film yesterday for my riverbank roots series: Svema MZ3, a 3ASA 35mmfilm. Yes - 3 ASA - you read that right. I shot this roll in my Kodak Retina IIIc (Schneider Retina-Xenon version), bracketing from 15 seconds to 6 minutes at f16, since I had ZERO information about its reciprocity characteristics (It seems to have very good reciprocity traits, as my longer exposures - calculated based on Ilford's Pan-F - were very overexposed). Its a curious film: it appears very contrasty on inspection, but in fact holds plenty of subtle detail and tone. I guessed at the development time for BER49 (Atomal49), since there was scant info about developers other than HC-110 (I don't have that), and processed it for 7.5 minutes. In the future, I would cut that back to about 6 minutes in the same developer. https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1877/43533275144_ba0faf6319_h.jpg

Great photo Paul!
I have only used tmy2 and fp4+ with PMK and gave it 1 extra stop. It gives a little more shadow detail and since the midtones are so broad and highlights so smooth, it still works nice.
Sometimes for LF PMK gave me uneven skies, so I mostly use pyrocat hdc/hd now. But it's a nice developer for MF.

Thanks, Bob. Coming from you, this is indeed high praise.
Yes - the branch. I struggled with the idea of removing it (I didn't), mainly because I come to this set of trees as often as I can, and from year to year, this scene changes as the flotsam of the flood season is deposited, or taken away each year. This year, it saw fit to drop this stripped log horizontally into the roots of the Alders. I saw this as a question to which I had to supply an answer, and simply manipulating the scene seemed the wrong thing to do, so I opted to work with it. With the reflection in the water, it resembles an Asian glyph of some sort, like a brush stroke made of wood. For me, that redeems its awkward intrusiveness. For other viewers, they must decide for themselves.

I hope my comments are NOT taken as political.

I looked up Bryan's images and found the Alabama memorial opened last April 2018, featured on 60 Minutes. Watched it today. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/60-minutes-oprah-winfrey-inside-the-memorial-to-victims-of-lynching/

I never knew of black people growing up in the 50's. In 1962 we moved near Philadelphia. I recall pointing at a person from our car. I asked my parents, 'What is wrong with that persons skin?' They explained carefully. I was age 11 from Edina, Minnesota, which only last year I discovered was a Sundown town. No blacks after sunset. When I came to Southern Illnois 50 years ago I recall the train station had separate bathrooms with signage. I think it was labeled 'Colored'. That changed shortly.

Turns out Sundown towns were everywhere, particularly in the Midwest and North. Last year I read the earlier version of this book. Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism Paperback (https://www.amazon.com/Sundown-Towns-Hidden-Dimension-American/dp/1620974347/ref=dp_ob_title_bk)

Ha, well, now that you mention it, I am thinking of putting together a little book with my favorite pictures from Easter Island. I have a few other projects I'm chipping away at, so it might be awhile, but watch this space!

Ken, your sky photos are great!

Made this photo this evening while walking with family after dark. It was too hot to walk in the day. 0.4 seconds handheld (sitting on the ground, elbow on leg bone) wide open f1.4. My wife moved a flashlight around the foreground which we practiced a couple times, while my daughter aimed a flashlight to the heavens and posed. D600 and Sigma 50.

Austin, that cemetery is cool!

I shot some digital today because I've shot like $500 worth of film this past month or two...ugh. Also macro/wildlife/insects are easier with it.

Nikon D800E, 200mm Micro:

http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/5008ss.jpg

I also wanted to try out a new lens I bought. I've wanted one of newer Nikon 500mm f/8 mirror lenses for years, for birding - but they are expensive, way more than the older models which aren't as good nor do they focus as close. But I found one listed for what the old ones cost - seller probably didn't know there was a difference - so I bought it for 1/3 the going rate. Gave it a whirl today but didn't see any good birds. Maybe next time. This dragonflyhad to be my test subject:

http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/5001ss.jpg

Way easier to carry around than my 300mm f/2.8...

Working with my "new" Kodak Retina IIIc, the Rodenstock Retina-Heligon lensed version which was supposedly made for the European market and is rarely found here in the USA. I have found these Kodak Retina cameras to be remarkably good cameras when used properly to squeeze the most out of them. The lenses are remarkably good, IMO, and the cameras themselves are a pleasure to use.
Film used was Kodak's TMX 100, shot at 64ASA, and processed in Rodinal 1:50.

Last Friday I went to a new state park called Chattahoochee Bend. Found this gorgeous tree hanging on to the edge of this ravine cut by a creek draining into the Chattahoochee River. After I snapped a couple photos with my 35mm, I started to setup my 6x15 camera closer and on the very steep ravine edge. It was very muddy but there was a tree root I was using as a ledge. Well, after shifting my feet a couple times and getting my shoes muddy, I slipped off the root. I barely grabbed a higher up root with my right hand before slipping completely down the ravine into the creek below. So then I was hanging by one hand on the root, while being completely unable to get any purchase on the muddy hill.

Some folks actually walked by since it was right off the trail, and didn't even glance my way as I was hanging there. I was kinda embarrassed so I said nothing. I finally got my other hand onto the root, then kicked the muddy hill and dug out a hole so I could get some purchase on the hill, and then hauled myself up and out. Was sore all weekend from hanging there for so long. Is kinda funny now. I wasn't in any danger, just would've gotten wet and extremely muddy if I'd have fallen all the way down.

Anyway, here is one of the 35mm photos I took. Haven't finished the 6x15 or 6x9 rolls of film I was shooting. Yes I did still shoot some photos (carefully!).

Nice to see the Ektachrome. Need to buy a roll or two, if only to support the film and maybe see a release of it in 120 / 4x5...

Shot today at the Dahlonega Gold Rush Festival. Nikon F2-SB, Nikkor 18cm f/2.5 tele on N-F adapter (originally made for the Nikon RF system and mirror housing adapter), T-Max 100, FX-39:

Had my 8x20 and shot two sheets of that, which I am about to go develop. Just finished dev'ing a couple 4x5 sheets I bummed off Eric. We had a good idea for the future - I can bring a Grafmatic to pop a few 4x5 images off if I want to using Eric's Chamonix / lenses if I am shooting a larger camera.

I think your hills just slope the other way ;)

One more image I forgot was on the roll...this is Lake Zwerner in Lumpkin County. There was some mist rising up off the lake as the sun rose. Eric and I drove past after meeting up nearby as we started to make our way up to the hiking place and I wanted to stop as I have been eyeing this tree for months, waiting for the light and conditions to be right for a photograph (I drive by here several times a week usually). This was the day, it seems. Leica M6, 50mm Summitar, TMX, FX-39, cropped just a little to 5x7 aspect ratio as I will probably make a few small prints of this:

Flood away Pali! Here we go Chassis! These are from my 2nd roll with the film but it was processed with a different kit (Arista E6) and I noticed some shifts in the shadows that I did not see on my previous roll. Still a very nice film but I don't think the magenta in the shadows is a true characteristic of the film.

Thank you Bryan! I have a few in 5x7 that I am treating like a treasure chest :) BTW, I realized I had the wrong profile selected in my scanner which has caused the cast in the shadows - the images actually are significantly more balanced and I'll need to go through the scans again.

That image is a challenge to render here: a small difference in monitor brightness changes it from quiet morning light to gloom.

Forgive the scratches - it's the old film, not the camera. It handles shooting into the sun well. And of course in this kind of situation the "distortion" from the swing lens is invisible.

Corran, you're doing very nice work with the Widelux. You make it look easy, which it isn't. Well done!

Thanks Jon, Antonio, and Mark. I've only shot my first couple of rolls with the Widelux, so we'll see what else I can come up with (if it will stop raining anyway). I've been shooting a lot with my phone in "pano" mode since getting it which gives the same distorted perspective, so I can kind of visualize the resultant image.

Ken, those dark tones work great for that! Aaron Siskind darkness and Ken Lee midtones.

With my D600/Sigma-50 in the snow yesterday.

Speaking of Aaron Siskind: he and I were supposed to meet up with Walker Evans at this roadside stand but it was closed

These falls are in half shadow most of the day except for a short time during midday. Might go back tomorrow during that time, and hopefully might have some clouds and try shooting with an O/R filter..

Really like the second version. A spot and framing that is definitely worth revisiting! Perhaps an overcast day to get more even lighting?

I agree with Xia. That second one has a lot of potential. Can you move back and a bit to the left...without falling off a cliff, of course. :)

Thanks Xia and Peter. Agree on the lighting, and planned to do that. Actually went back today but shot 4x5 instead, trying some other things.

As for moving back...no, unfortunately. The reason this waterfall is hard to shoot is that it is very tall and there is a viewing area on a wooden "bridge" across the front of the falls. So all images either have that in the photo (and trees/scrub), or, you are 50 feet from a 700+ foot waterfall! Very tricky situation that a swing-lens camera fixes nicely. Even a 12mm lens on 35mm or my 47XL on 4x5 can't really do the job. Anyway, will try again soon with better light and yes to the left probably (very busy and crowded when I was there as it was a weekend and Thanksgiving week holiday started).

Next it rains, everything changes again. Sort of like why I like shooting at the beach or during snow. It's short lived beauty and design.

This is a pano made from 6 frames because I didn't have a wide angle lens with me. I did have my 50 and DSLR and stitching them together is trivial in lightroom.
Crockett's beach. Owls Head Maine. I was driving home and the clouds looked cool lit by the moon so I know the area and drove to the perfect spot for a photo.

For the first time ever, the wife and I kinda sorta decorated for the holidays. Specifically, we put up some ceramic decorations that are family heirlooms. My great-grandmother made this Christmas tree - she was a prolific ceramicist as a hobby - typically with patterns or something as I have seen identical pieces elsewhere. She died just a couple of years ago, and this and a number of other pieces were passed down to me this year. Here is the lit-up tree (with a new LED bulb :)) in our living room:

Apologies if it's a little early for Christmas stuff ;).

I'm looking to get a compact, inexpensive (under $300) digital "point and shoot" camera (not a phone). Any suggestions?
