I host all my photos on my own websites, so they don't expire until I do.

Oh, I thought the photos were largely posted directly on the LFF servers along with the text of the post itself. I figured the photos probably took up more server hard drive which the site owner was paying to rent. Therefor set a time limit before deletion of the photo, leaving the bare text intact. As one particularly interested in the Xray film thread, I fount it greatly useless because the photos are gone on so many of them. There's so much deadwood and dead links on the internet nowadays.

View From Warm Water Cove, San Francisco.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/836/27634365298_706b87abbe_b.jpg

This is a turn of the 21st century view from the shoreline of Warm Water Cove in the historical "Dogpatch" region of San Francisco. It was taken with a 300mm lens on a Nikon F3 and highlights the graffiti that was typical of the area at the time. Pictured is one of the old Muni streetcars in what was know as the Muni bone yard which contained several such cars and the graffiti on the adjoining dock - all of which was typical of the neighborhood which is just a mile or two from the downtown business district. In old San Francisco Warm Water Cove was a popular destination for picnicking families and was called Warm Water because it was a good swimming location and beach. But subsequent industrialization led to the deterioration pictured. For more information see:

The wife and I went to the GA Renaissance Festival yesterday. Been meaning to for years, but the end of the spring semester is really busy for both of us and we always end up missing it. This year we planned ahead and set this weekend aside well in advance. Anyway, I went once when I was in grade school so technically not my first time, but really my first time. Brought along my Pentax 67 and Nikon F3 but only used the F3. I know better for next year what to bring. Here's one quick scan of some Tri-X I dev'd last night, more to come probably.

Nikon F3, 80-200mm f/4.5 AI, Tri-X, HC-110 dil. E

http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/renfair-0100ss.jpg

As a side-note, I've been brainstorming all week about photography (historically) and the Ren Fair. The camera obscura was at the tail end of the classic dates for the Renaissance. It would be fun to put together some kind of "picture box" attraction/instant portrait shop for Ren Fairs using a pinhole. Not quite period appropriate but almost. There was one "Ye-Olde Costume and Photo" shop that was of course...not at all appropriate :). I was of course looking at all of the artisan/crafts on display and we bought one each of woodcraft (pair of shot glasses / demitasse cups), glassblowing (another hummingbird feeder for our house), and pottery (beautifully glazed demitasse cup).

We had some downpours this afternoon as I finished up work on an island and was waiting for the boat to depart at the end of the day, These are big rain drops hitting the calm ocean. It's not usually calm in the afternoon. The clouds were dramatic but didn't photograph well, but looked nice as reflection material. This is loosely inspired by John Paul Caponigro's resonance photographs. Made with my Google nexus 5x phone.

Couple weeks ago I found a little Pentax Spotmatic at a community yard sale with 4 lenses and like every accessory ever for $40. I had to tear down one lens and clean our some light fungus and the camera smells a little funky, but I've always wanted an M42 camera and I like the early Pentax lenses. Anyway, finally got a chance to shoot a little bit with it and it works great. Here's a few images from the 35mm f/3.5 Super Tak on TMX:

Nice one. The Super Tak seems to have a bit softer contrast that I like. My Nikon lenses, even older ones, are all hard-sharp, high-contrast.

Here's something way different. Finally got a Nikonos V and shot this a couple weeks ago, but just dev'd and scanned. This is at the base of a waterfall.

The water was flowing quite a lot due to rain, so the water was quite murky. Need to try again with clearer water.

http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/nikonos-0245ss.jpg

The water was flowing quite a lot due to rain, so the water was quite murky. Need to try again with clearer water.

I like it as it already is ... interesting!

Quite a gritty story pictured. Disguise glasses, empty/disarmed pistol, different mix of cheap and nice bullets unused, still mysterious suspect facing away from the camera. Simultaneously in the wrong place at the wrong time and at the right place at the right time.

Chased this storm a little and found these powerlines leading from the main power substation at the Lake Lanier Dam. Decided to take my old Contax I out for a spin. I don't shoot it a lot because it's a pain in the ass and a finicky camera but it is fun when it works. Here's one more from the day before, after a little rain storm, deep in the woods:

For sure. I've found that it's very hard to shake off the prejudice that smooth and sharp is always superior. I'm sure for me, this is a holdover from studying a lot of f/64 School type photographers when I was starting out. It's not that smooth and sharp big negatives don't have a certain power, just that there are other roads to go down, other ways to try and express yourself. Not that I need to tell anyone here any of this! But, yeah, old habits are hard to throw off.

These are amazing. A Leica with a 50mm... I bet you had a few people look at you with a weird face.

Thanks Ramiro! I don't know if anyone noticed with a keen eye, haha :D

There were definitely guys with HUGE telephoto setups though... very obnoxious in the spectators area, but I get it... very difficult, near impossible, to get a press pass.

In the next village to Église Sainte Marie (posted above) is Église St. Bernard. I'm guessing that this church, built ten years after the largest wooden church in north America but only a few kilometers from it, was constructed in a spirit of competitiveness. It sits on a hill and as one approaches from the south it looks more like a medieval European abbey than the kind of twentieth century church expected in a rural community of 850 people. Sadly, the source of funds for it is obvious: I passed through many communities where the houses and gardens were well-kept and looked prosperous. St. Bernard doesn't have that look, and one wonders whether the community poured its disposable wealth into this structure, and the results are still apparent.

I've spent the last few days cleaning out the darkroom and camera gear of a school teacher who passed away a few months back. He was a photography fanatic, and I have the privilege of seeing some fantastic photos he took and printed from the 60's, 70's and on. He shot mostly 35mm, also there's three Yashica TLR's in the gear, and piles of Nikkormats and Nikon F-3's. Here are some examples from the thousands of prints. I hope you enjoy them as much as I.

Milky Way Over Kilauea (https://flic.kr/p/Kj5kyM) by Michael Schomer (https://www.flickr.com/photos/mjschomer/), on Flickr

Nikon D850 with a Nikon 20mm f/1.8

Exposure: 15 seconds, f/1.8, ISO 400

This was taken at about 13,000 feet on Mauna Kea. The red glow is the active lava flow from Kilauea’s fissure 8 reflecting in the clouds. The small sliver of light on the horizon, just to the left of fissure 8, is the moon, just beginning to rise.

It is a single exposure; but, used a few different grad and radial filters in post to increase exposure of the Milky Way relative to the glow from Kilauea.

A very beautiful image.

Do you think raising the ISO 4 stops which would shorten exposure 4 stops would have lessened the star movement?

Would that have significantly affected your capture?

I understand time was short. Just looking for more process.

There shouldn't be much star movement at 15 seconds... It is more likely Coma towards the corners of the lens that is exacerbated by processing - especially since shot wide open.

I took multiple images of the scene, with different ISOs set, up to 6400. I found the files with ISO 400 were the most malleable. Increasing the ISO caused the Kilauea glow to lose detail and blow out. At ISO 400, the Milk Way and stars were dim, but I was able to increase exposure on those areas without adding any more noise than had it been shot at a higher ISO. Ultimately, balancing the cloud glow vs. the night sky was the most difficult part.

With such a high megapixel camera, even at 15 seconds, there is a bit of star movement. As was mentioned, there is definitely some coma in the corners from the lens being shot wide open. If I had more time, I might have played around with some shorter exposures, but I worry that the noise might have increased too much. Because of the cloud movement, and short window of opportunity, it wasn't a good candidate for stacking techniques. Also, I am definitely not an expert at astrophotography. This was really my first attempt in good, non light polluted conditions.

If I had another crack at it, I might try a 10-second exposure with the same settings. I am convinced though, that there is no advantage to using a higher ISO than 400 on the D850. I was able to recover the exposure in post with the same noise as shooting natively at higher ISOs, with the advantage of having more usable dynamic range.

There shouldn't be much star movement at 15 seconds... It is more likely Coma towards the corners of the lens that is exacerbated by processing - especially since shot wide open.

If you look at the stars in the center, there is some movement, but not much. It is more noticeable on the dimmer stars. There is definitely coma in the corners, but it is better than my old 20mm f/2.8 AIS that I had been using.

Once I print it, I will have a better idea of how much movement is really noticeable. I'm hoping to get a nice 19-inch (A3+) print.

When I hear "tiny formats" I immidiatly think "Pentax Auto 110 Super" :-D. A great camera for urban stuff and whilst being a full automatic camera, it's capable of complex lighting situations like in this picture (with a Lomography Orca film).

Playing with 60 year old Velox paper. I had been looking for 8x10 Velox for a long time and finally got two sealed boxes. Made this print last night. It required a 5-minute exposure @ f/2.8 under my enlarger to develop without too much fog due to the age.

The look is a different animal than modern paper.

Visualizing with my cell phone's "panorama" mode. This creates a swing-lens effect but still. Shot this image on my K6x15 panorama camera but won't get it developed for a bit. I've been travelling extensively through the southeast for various family things, work, and other stuff.

Thanks guys! It was hard to line up the mirrored image (at 12mm, a half degree cocked one way or another suddenly makes the whole thing tilted!).

tuco, I like all of the old computer stuff you have been posting. That game is not something I would've been allowed to play back in the day though ;).

Here's a little abstraction of lines and curves at the Peachtree Plaza. Same setup, just cropped square. I'll lay off the architecture now for awhile :).

The intriguing thing about the SunTrust plaza stairs is the unique synergy of the two photos next to either. Did you intend to do that? Both images are strong in their own right but the juxtaposition creates something entirely different.

Corran

Austin, definitely a little different but a fun juxtaposition!

Speaking of which - Steve, I didn't intend to present them that way when I photographed it, but after seeing the scans side-by-side I liked how they looked together, hence the diptych presentation here. Perhaps I will print and mat them as such.
