Congratulations for the fine images in a location that one imagines must more than 500 yards from the parking lot.
A small gripe. As much as I understand the need to protect the highlights, I feel you are too conservative in that respect. See below the histogram of the image. Independent from browser, screen, etc. Your image as seen might benefit from using fully the output dynamic range.

Those are great, Jim! I'm glad it wasn't just me who got turned around in Bisti. Even without GPS or a compass, I was sure I knew how to get to the area where the "famous" formations were but boy, was I wrong. In hindsight, maybe it was for the best, as being lost made me look at what I did find with fresh eyes. Of course, I'd love to go back and have another go at it.

Another trek into a different section of the MacDonald Forest north of town.
Made with the new Adox 120 format CHS 100 II, rated at 32 ASA and developed with the Thornton 2-Bath process: 5 + 4.5 min.
The CHS100 II is a classic grain type film, so for a 100 speed film it's quite grainy. But it's also very sharp and the tonal scale/separation is fantastic. I recommend the film highly. Just be sure to give it ample exposure (more than you'd think)

As for your previous posting in MacDonald forest (second pic) I admire the silvery highlights. What is, according to you, the main factors in achieving this look? Choice of film? Generous exposure --indeed the shadows are "open". Compensating development? The scene itself --must have been quite dark, and maybe that is one case where photo recording reveals more than the naked eye? Would you concur that this superb combination would not be suitable for a sunny scene?
Irrespective of discussions, congratulations!

Paul thats wonderful...reminds me of the forests I'd hiked through with my daughter and her husband, north of their home in Ridgefield, Washington. (Did not have my camera along on that short visit - but next time I'll be sure to bring it!)
The slight darkening along the edges of your print (looks like you'd edge-burned just a bit?) I find very effective in enhancing the depth and "three-dimensional feel" of this photo - as does the fact that its a square image.
I've had such an on-again, off-again relationship with the square format - but images like this one inspire me to give this format yet another chance. Thank you!

Thank you Bernard, glad you appreciate the photograph. Let me see if I can answer your questions adequately.
I don’t think there’s so much a “main factor” as much as a “happy recipe” of combined ingredients. You’ve referenced the main ingredients: a good film choice, plenty of exposure, a compensating developer, and the lighting conditions all combine to make the image I want.
Yes, the light was dim; late afternoon on a very grey, wet day. This led to a very long exposure (at 32ASA, I metered 20 seconds at f11.5, and with reciprocity this came to about 70 seconds - Adox’s reciprocity values). A 70 second exposure amplifies contrast in a flat lighting scene, but the 2-bath development suppresses the lighter values somewhat, keeping them in check. I’d say that the long, ample exposure revealed lots of poorly illuminated shadow information, but in spite of the dim light, it was still mostly visible to me - I just wanted to make sure it was available on the negative to work with.
I have yet to use any other developers, to compare their performance with CHS 100 II, but I plan on exposing a roll and cutting it in half: one will be processed in FA-1027, and the other in Mytol (home brew a tool equivalent) and see how that looks. I like working with Barry Thornton's 2-bath developer, but its not the most subtle: it tends to produce harder looking grain structure, which isn’t suitable for every image. I’ll probably give CHS 100 II in PMK at some point as well.

Thanks very much, John, I appreciate it. Yes, I’ve applied some manual vignette to the image - I often do.
And yes - working with the square can be challenging. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. But I often enjoy the square as a composition tool.
Paul....that's lovely!

Thanks Serge! I've tried a couple different Pro-Mist filters. A rather well-known YouTuber talks about them on occasion, but I think in the lower, 1/4 strength, which stay expensive. The higher strengths like my 3 filter are easy to find cheap - I think I got this B60 one for like $10 on eBay. The 1/4 strength does nicely lift the shadows in high-contrast situations without the "glow" like above - I have one of those as well and have used it on 4x5 a few times.

Speaking of pro-mist filters there are 2 flavors from Tiffen: Pro-mist , Black Pro-mist and also each may be combined with a Warming coating.
Black Pro-mist is intended to preserve the darkness of dark tones, while a regular Pro-mist may reduce or soften the contrast in dark tones.
The price is dependant on popularity, where 1/4th seems to be amongst the most popular ones and I tend to agree to that (1/8th is too weak). But smaller sizes are priced reasonably enough ~USD 50.

Yeah, it's got a very nice lens. I find the rangefinder patch a little difficult to use on mine, and it's prone to camera shake if I handhold it and use slower speeds (probably because of its size!), but it can produce great pictures when I get it right.

I did think about it when I saw these and went as far as looking at various seaside resorts on Google Streetview to find more likely candidates. I think it will be a bit of a longform project if I do - the resorts closest to me don't have that many of these types of shelter, so it would take more effort to get to the places where I can find more.

It was quite the storm. We were without power for four days, and had a big hemlock topple in the wind. Luckily, it missed our house, and the neighbor's house as well (just barely). Many of our other neighbors were not so fortunate.

Thank you very much, Igor! I never tire of photographing our PNW forests with their ferns and mosses/lichens. I still find it all very exotic, even after living here for many years.
I look forward to seeing your woods photos, you always do such beautiful work.

Thank you very much! I find it interesting to realize I’ve developed a “style” over the past decade (that’s fine by me!). If that makes my work recognizable, that’s a good thing.

I've been studying Geoffrey Crawley's work on developer formulas again recently and I found several references to FX-15 being of the D-76 class, but much improved. So, this morning I made up a liter of it and tested it on FP4 this afternoon. Among other things, it supposedly provides a modest boost in film speed, and so I rated this roll of FP4 at 100 ASA, which is much higher than the 64ASA I usually rate it at. The FX-15 did indeed produce very good, well exposed negatives at 100 ASA, so that's great. The negatives also have an excellent tonal rendering to them, with excellent midtone separation and delicate higher values. It also (supposedly) provides better sharpness/acutance, and there's certainly plenty of sharpness to this image (It's the Hasselblad/Planar used) but without doing an A/B comparison with another developer, I can't say if it's a noticeable improvement on sharpness and grain characteristics.
Wow!
Striking image, Paul.
And a great subject to test with...a black cat on shiny white plastic.
Well done!

Are you familiar with the YouTube channel "The Proper People (https://youtu.be/ajVIGj_KEGc?si=GqzHwCCfghFK8hEv)"? They travel the world, exploring all manner of abandoned sites, including some of the most spectacular power plants here in the USA. Well worth checking out, if you're into urbex.

"The Proper People" Interesting video. There also the plant is strongly degraded, whether from abandon or vandalism.
Actually I don't consider myself an urbexer. There are so many people doing the most incredible explorations.

They are water turbine blade pitch controls.
The spring loaded controls stop the water turbine over-speeding when the water pressure gets to high.
It is a common problem in hydro electric facilities.
Just thought I would let you know - in case you were interested.
Terrific picture though.

@ Jim Jones Thank you and glad you liked it. Concerning the light, I had a couple of Vivitar 283 strobes and a Sekonik 308B to check the balance. Half by chance the flash was not overdone. If I may add a comment myself, the wide FOV of the SWC, plus cropping out the foreground in post provided me a "poor man's shift"; notice the keystoning is not 100% corrected, which I would find un-natural.
Nice series, Igor.
