Nice work Sheel. That lens and film back make a great combination. I use the same combination with a Wista with great results.

Thanks guys!

Some nice work on this page!

Yesterday I shot some photos with my Linhof 70. I realized one of my film backs had a roll in it already, which turned out to be from last year (I kept using a different film back instead). This shot was from a trip to FDR State Park in west GA, taken w/ my 58mm XL:

Jeff,

Love the dam pic! Very nice job.

Thank you for the kind words Alan. I truly enjoy exploring the Arizona countryside with my Hasselblad. This is a remnant of the Old US Highway 80 Bridge at Rainbow Wash south of the Gillespie Dam - about 20 miles north of Gila Bend. The main span was washed away in the 1993 flood that breached Gillespie Dam. Only this approach on the north side of Rainbow Wash remains.

Shot this a week ago, at 'Bowmans Island,' part of the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area below Buford Dam / Lake Lanier. I visited this place about a decade ago but forgot it existed - it's kind of hidden in the Army Corp of Engineers "park" around the dam. It's quite a unique little section along the Chattahoochee River which is subject to constantly changing water levels due to release of water from the dam.

Linhof 70, 65mm f/8 SA, Acros 100, Pyrocat

http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/bowmansisland-8858ss.jpg

As a side note, the Chattahoochee River's "source" is along the Appalachian Trail, right near the next bit I need to hike. That river is one of the important rivers that flows down to Florida, combining with the Flint to form the Apalachicola River. Georgia and Florida are in a legal battle over water rights and usage right now, so I think it makes an interesting photographic subject that I should really explore more in depth.

... Georgia and Florida are in a legal battle over water rights and usage right now...

Nice, I see the trees are finally losing leaves down there.

As a side note, back in the 80s I was researching material for a report. I got side tracked on this article about water usage and the future. It noted the dropping water tables back then and how many states have water as a border. And so many water usage agreements are based on there is plenty for everyone. But it predicted that will all change and States will be battling it out.

Thanks tuco.

Today I went out and found a section of the Appalachian Trail still covered in snow. It usually doesn't last long down here in the south but we got so much. Here's two photos I took with my Rolleiflex:

http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/snowapptrail-8858ss.jpg

http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/snowapptrail-8860ss.jpg

This second photo is something I've been wanting to do as we get some wicked wind coming through the mountains occasionally. I wanted to capture the feeling of all the tall trees swaying. I also was inspired by a similar photo Austin Granger posted a while ago with a similar wind/tree thing going on.

gnuyork: not to overdo the praise, but thanks for the "additions," I've been looking through the entire series a few times and think you've got a really good eye for composition etc. I go to a monthly photo critique group, and one of the rules is that while we should bring 5 or 6 photos at a time, they should work together as a series or show. Your set here is a perfect example!

First try at this - not perfect, so will try again later this week.

Many years ago my grandfather had this massive logic board hanging up in his shop. In retirement he repaired electronics, including arcade machines, and this is one that was pulled from a broken machine. He died tragically in a car crash when I was a young teenager. I saved this board, among a few other things from his shop, before my grandmother's family threw most things away (that's another story...). I just recently rediscovered this logic board in some stored stuff at my parent's house, and decided I should make some photographs of it.

This is the underside of the board. I didn't quite get the movements right so the left side is a bit soft. I will try again on 4x5 as I think I can be a bit more precise and will be easier to see on the larger GG. I took this with my Linhof 70, 10.5cm f/4.5 APO Lanthar, on Acros 100 dev'd in Pyrocat - lit with my newly rejuvenated Speedotron kit:

http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/circuit-8867ss.jpg

Oh, also I looked up this logic board and discovered it was made in 1975 for the Midway arcade machine "Wheels." It's apparently a fairly uncommon cabinet. I found a catalog from the era and this board cost $600 back then to replace, which calculating for inflation is about $2800 today.

The day after Christmas I spent the whole day hiking along the gulf coast of Mississippi, near Gautier and Ocean Springs. I love the MS coast and my mom is moving there this coming year so I am planning on some long-term trips to visit and photograph.

One of the places I discovered, which I had never realized was there, was the Gulf Islands National Seashore. This place is a national park with some interesting salt marshes and coastal savannas. Near the end of the day my wife was wore slap out but we came out from a little off-trail hike into a positively beautiful little bayou. I had gotten a bit wore out too so I only had my Nikon F3 but I immediately turned around and went all the way back to the car to get my medium format gear!! Ran back to the location while she waited in the car and ripped through several rolls of film. Saw lots of compositions all within 10 or 15 feet of each other. I could spend days just right in that bayou!

Anyway, here's two images from the excursion. Both taken with my Mercury Universal Camera, in 2x3 configuration with a Horseman 6x9 back and Schneider 38mm XL. Shot on Acros 100 dev'd in Pyrocat 1:1:100 N+1:

Thanks. It's funny, just 5-6 years ago I absolutely HATED palmettos and the swamps of southern GA, MS, and FL, finding them so boring compared to picturesque mountain scenes from Adams, et al. Now I love it and miss the swamps after moving. I am looking forward to some LF and ULF shooting at this place next year.

Thanks for the comment about the Molson shot. Right after that some crazy guy insisted on standing next to me and gabbing non-stop, so I packed up and explored Eastward on the Chesaw Road, finding this spot.
I used the last of my film here and never would have discovered it if that guy hadn't been so annoying. Maybe the photo-gods sent him to chase me away to a new location?

First one is a winner for me. I like the way you framed the background tree under the limb of the foreground one. I also like the consistency of the foreground with what I guess are the saw palmettos... we don't have anything like that around these parts.

Thanks! Yep those are saw palmettos. Ubiquitous and sometimes hard to compose with, but I like how you can get up on them with wide angles to give them weight in the composition. Kind of like audience members at the edge of a stage.

I got it hooked up to an old TV (it needed the little connectors that hook to a screw, shaped like --C, whatever those are called) and it worked! For about an hour. Then it went kaput. I would love to have a small matching monitor in the same iconic shade of brown for photos. Maybe I'll look on eBay.

Enjoying a delicate Narnia again here. We've gotten quite a bit more snow since these photos a couple weeks ago, and temps have dropped from freezing to below 0f. Certain shapes stand out more in nature when there is snow. Textures get delicate. Things are a little more abstract. The scene is more temporary; it's all going to change in an hour or two after the photo.

I know this is no big deal to you northerners but yesterday when I was out photographing I found a frozen lake. I've seen ice on the water before but it is usually only a small area and maybe a millimeter thick. But no, this lake was froze up good - probably could skate on it. I took a big rock and tossed it out into the lake and it skidded all the way into the center of the lake on top of the ice!

I shot a couple images from the bank, where it was especially thick and had some interesting leaves:

And one more...someone took a big rock from the shore and really tried to crack the ice. I lassoed the rock with my camera strap after shooting this to see if it would move but it was totally frozen into the ice.

4-Jan-2018, 17:31
Thanks all. Yes, oftentimes things melt too fast. This crazy winter storm has kept temps well below freezing here in GA for a long time though! The ice formed huge walls that looked more like the limestone walls of an ancient cave.

Bob, we'll find out how good I am with getting that tonality/pop once I print it. I've got a stack of negatives waiting to be printed, but extreme cold in my darkroom is preventing me from doing that at the moment! I am wondering though - what do you think of "digital" silver printing, such as from DSI (http://digitalsilverimaging.com/)? I spoke to them at a trade show last year and their prints were impressive. Most of it was digital images but I have been thinking that for some negatives it could be a good alternative depending on the situation. Some negatives need more post-processing to "get there" and while I can do lots in Photoshop, I'm still learning the ins-and-outs of DR work.

With that image, and some other ones, I would like to try lith printing to push the contrast up, if I'm understanding the process/reasoning for lith printing.

This composition is exceptional and the tones are much more "optimistic" than your general style. Finding and photographing scenes in the Palouse that draw the eye in like this is a big challenge. Thanks chassis, Bryan.

Thanks John. I'm not offended by your opinion at all. Actually, your description of my picture as being "optimistic" made me laugh because I thought it was so perceptive. I'll be the first to admit that my pictures can get a little gloomy. It wasn't always like that, but somewhere along the way, and without my even really noticing it, my photos became-I'm not sure if this is quite the right way to put it-psychological, by which I mean that subjects became the things that seem to correspond with my interior condition. While I realize that this might sound strange to say, I've come to the point where I don't feel like I have much to do with what I photograph or how I photograph it. Things are either pictures or they're not pictures. I recognize them. So to get back to your comment, maybe I'm starting to make optimistic pictures because I'm feeling more optimistic!

It's funny, even though I've been photographing pretty intensely for about twenty years now, sometimes I feel like I'm just getting started, as if everything prior was just stuff I had to get out of my system before I could start seeing clearly.

austin granger
4-Jan-2018, 22:35
I feel like I'd like to add that I'm not a particularly gloomy person, at least not all the time. I mean, like everyone, I have my struggles, but I'm not a completely miserable wretch or anything. What I was trying to get at above is that, for me, photography has come to be a way of trying to work things out, instead of a say, a search for beauty. Hence the sometimes gloomy pictures.

I'm not sure if that clarifies anything. :-)

Here's another image I took last month down on the Gulf Coast. I am getting together all the negatives I want to print soon and I can't decide on this one. I like the sweeping trees, but I am debating cropping a bit in from the left, either up to the bottom of the main tree or maybe up to the far left tree.

Thanks, when I got more serious than family photos, I also shot weddings for a while, strictly to pay for more equipment. I rarely shot during the ceremony but always broke out the twin lens to be quiet. Now that I own several of these neat Zeiss rangefinders I don't have to worry about being stealthy.

Bryan--

Love the shots from the Maritime Forest zone--live oaks are intrinsically interesting, and saw palmetto especially really looks good in Acros, I think.

A question for you: I'm curious what your game plan was for exposing/developing Acros roll film for this scene. (FWIW, I'm just getting my feet wet with MF film, but I'm enjoying banging around the Smokies with my Pentax 67 kit.:))

Thanks for your thoughts. I was a symphony musician for over 10 years, in two regional symphonies - a magical experience to hear live, but sometimes a transcendent one to be in the middle of such a performance!

Thanks! Well, this day was heavy overcast. I wanted to up the contrast in the scene and resigned the sky to a flat white. So using my spotmeter I exposed the shadows at Zone II at an EI of 64-80 and then checked the highlights. Seeing as they were only at around Zone VII I added 20% to my development time to push the overall contrast up and get the light on film to be what I was envisioning. I spent a lot of years trying to expose my shadows at Zone III and underdevelop to get the sky to Zone VII and all that does is make things muddy and overexposed. Also Acros has flat midtones so increased development helps a lot to get the tonality right. Acros is a tricky film - I prefer T-Max 100 but they only recently finally started making it again due to production problems. I've got a few more propacks left of Acros then back to T-Max 100, though to be fair Acros might've been just the ticket for this day.

Excellent, thanks so much for taking the time to elaborate--I'm a long way from any sort of metering precision, so just having a basic approach depending on lighting conditions is invaluable. At any rate, I'll look forward to your work here in the Southern Highlands as well...

Recently, I've been exploring a rural region in central Arizona that reminds me very much of where I was raised. There are numerous abandoned farmhouses in the area that have my attention. Wow, if you can make your prints POP like these samples , especially the rock I am impressed.

Got into the darkroom this evening, and here's the first print in the wash:

http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/printrockice.jpg

This is a straight print with a #5 filter on Ilford WT. High values are a bit less grey, I could burn them a bit with a #0 filter. Might try that tomorrow. What do you think?

tuco
23-Jan-2018, 08:52
Yeah, on my monitor the detail of the rock on the print is less then the scan.

Corran
23-Jan-2018, 10:46
Ilford WT is a funny thing - it seems to have a bit of a dry-down effect in the highlights. Upon looking at the prints this morning, dry, the tonality on the rock has darkened to just a hair lighter than the scan, much more grey than the cell phone pic in the wash. I won't bore everyone with another pic/scan.

I think this problem is from going through X-rays with this film, unexposed, about a year ago. It's Pan F, which I shot yesterday and processed today. I was experimenting with a camera I don't often use, and I had been suspicious of these rolls of Pan F, because I had had the white dot problem with the ones I shot in England last year. But this is a new one to me.

I doubt it. I've had film zapped by x-rays 10 to 12 times on trips with no ill effect. Unless it's really fast film it's probably not the airport x-rays.

I doubt it. I've had film zapped by x-rays 10 to 12 times on trips with no ill effect. Unless it's really fast film it's probably not the airport x-rays.
I know that's what everyone says. Thanks for your thoughts. I'm going to shoot another roll of it, in a different camera, this weekend, and also a completely different film, then see what happens. It's a bummer though, since the river has dropped back down. I should have used a different film....

I've been contemplating testing Delta3200 myself with the hopes of using it for some portraits of my grandchildren. I really like the look Tim Scott got with this film - https://flic.kr/p/xBmGYp. I assume you pulled the development 1 stop. How did that effect grain, tonality, etc?

Give it a try. I don't think I'm really pulling much at all. It's about the speed I'm getting from my developer. It's not a box speed developer. I've shot it at EI 400 before and have a development time for that. The grain gets a little finer the slower you go. The Delta 3200 data sheet has development times for various developers at different exposure indexes you can try.

EDIT: The Delta 3200 data sheet has development times from EI 400 to EI 12500

Yep, from what I've read and observed most people agree the true speed is around 1000 give or take. Two reference points I've shot are below.

But this is a new one to me.
http://i.imgur.com/p1SwH0X.jpg

Try a long (5 to 10 minute) presoak before the developer if film has excessively dried (from being on a long flight)... The coating process (which I suspect is a thin ooze coming out of a # of jet nozzles, like little streams of toothpaste), then squeezed flat with a roller, produces a overlapping strip pattern, when overdried soaks a little unevenly, with slightly harder/softer areas that absorb developer unevenly... The presoak will "fluff" the emulsion evenly for even absorption...

At worst, you can see a "corduroy" pattern developed into some very dried/old roll films, I suspect is a relic from the coating process... (This pattern changes with different formats of films...)

Thanks Steve. I usually do a presoak about that long, and I don't think I neglected to in this instance. I actually woke up the other morning with an idea of what may have caused the problem. I developed this roll by itself in a two roll tank, and put it on the bottom, when I think I should have put it on the top, above the empty reel. So maybe the empty reel draining onto the reel with film, after agitation, caused more agitation in those bands.
Thanks to everyone who have chimed in on this!

Does your film travel through the camera horizontally or vertically??? What I described runs along the length of the film... (I assume vertically...)

Excess drying will do this...

Did some serious hiking yesterday with my full 4x5 kit as well as 6x12 back and some other stuff. Was really tired/sore when I got home late last night but woke up first thing this morning to do some developing.

This is Lula Lake Falls, which is on private land opened up only twice a month. The falls, rocks, and trees don't look like GA. I got there first thing in the morning and the area in front of the falls was completely frozen over from the mists of the waterfall. It was really hard to get close to the falls as I do not have the proper footwear to walk on slick ice. I was excited about this composition and am very happy with this negative.

Chamonix 45n1, Horseman 612 back, 58mm XL, Acros 100, Pyrocat 1:1:100 dev'd for 9 minutes @75F:

proper footwear to walk on slick ice.

Definitely looks like a place to have some Kahtoola Microspikes handy--they've become a necessary piece of kit for me on our high country "seeps" this time of year (especially since it seems Father Time has eroded what ever catlike reflexes I might have had...:p)

Otherwise, a lovely scene--all things considered, what size prints are you looking to get from your 120 work?

That's exactly the product I was looking at a few weeks ago when I tried to hike on the Appalachian Trail after some snow and it was way too icy to walk. I will definitely need to pick some up for next winter...

Thanks! Usually I don't like to go over 5x for darkroom enlargements, as it starts to fall apart at that point. I'll probably cut some of my 16x20 paper up in half and make ~8x16 enlargements from this.

Yes, it does. Say, what is the aspect ratio of your 6x14? After experiencing the 3:1 on my 6x17, I'm finding I'd like the cinema scope 2.39:1 aspect with a 75mm on a helicoid would be more ideal for other things than nature and landscape that I've been trying.

I'll let Pali talk about the camera, but perhaps his thread in the Lounge subforum would be best for discussing.

Here's two more images. One thing about a fixed-focus camera is you can get way down in the water and not worry about focusing or whatever. For first image, the camera was only a couple inches above the water. I used a 6x17 viewfinder to frame these, knowing they would be cropped in a bit from the side.

I started with 3:1 (6x17) years ago with a Fuji G617 camera, and found it was often too wide for too many situations.
I graduated to a Fotoman 6x17 because it offered interchangeable lenses.
But it was still too wide for most of my (revised) wide format taste.
I found that I really preferred the 2.5:1 format after I began shooting with my 8x20" Canham.
Sooooo.... I modified my 6x17 Fotoman to a true 2.5:1 format (6x2.5=6x15).
Here's how I did it...

Okay, thanks. But that doesn't look like it will help on a GX617. It's a fixed, four-cranks on the film advance lever that takes you to the next frame. I'm wondering if a person can 3D print their own adapted 75mm + helicoid lens holder for a GX617 with contact interface and all.

I like the shapes you see in the trees here gnuyork. That camera can do a good job separating the trees from the background as you are exploring.

Here I take a break from the rocks and trees I usually shoot and photograph ice. Still much texture and light and shapes that I like about winter.

Back to shooting classic motorcycles. Shot on TriX 400 and scanned from Ilford print. Lighting with 3 battery flashes.

John,

My favorite motorcycle combined with one of my favorite films...what's not to like? ;) Beautiful tonality, btw.
