The Southeastern states have kudzu, and the Pacific Northwest must fight the invasive Himalayan Blackberry. Cutting it only slows down its progress. You have to dig out all the roots or it comes right back. Nasty stuff. Austin's image fully captures the nature of the problem.

Here in the southwest we have Oleander. Can grow to 30 feet tall, cut it to the ground and it will simply spring right back, stumps are very difficult to remove (I've done two in my yard), and it grows/blooms just fine with only the few ounces of water that falls from the sky each year. It's beautiful when it blooms, but, then again, the blooms are EVERYWHERE when they start falling off.

I can attest that the Himalayan Blackberry is a relentless foe. I've surrendered a good part of my backyard to it, as to even contain it would require devoting myself to the battle full-time.

I pulled my blackberry bushes out by the roots. And every spring, when the ground is wet, I pull up any fresh starts. It's minor maintenance after that for me.
The intersection photo is awesome. Strong Austin G. style and something most would keep the accelerator down and zip past.
Once in a while, I accidentally underexpose a shot, especially near dusk when I don't notice how quickly the light changes. Tmax 400 has sort a gritty look when greatly underexposed, and it's not bad. Just one of the variety of looks for this film depending on how it's used or misused.

Opened up my Noblex only to find a spent roll of film in it. Turned out to be some images I shot at Sloss Furnace a little while ago. Then I went and messed up the development, but I saved this one.
Noblex 150U, T-Max 100, Pyrocat 1:1:200 (oops), soaked in selenium for a 30 minutes after development:

That's a cool scene, Bryan.
Thanks, this is the first time I tried long exposures on the Noblex. I did 4 rotations at the 2" exposure time, to make an 8" exposure total.
I like the pinball machine photo above. I know it's difficult to get good exposure/tonality in that situation!

Thanks. What model is your Noblex?
It's the 150U. I'm not sure what they actually changed between the U and UX but I have all the options including front rise and the slow-exposure module. I think they just hadn't changed the name yet and mine is an early UX. It has the Docter lens.
It's the 150U. I'm not sure what they actually changed between the U and UX ...
Per Camera-wiki.org (http://camera-wiki.org/wiki/Noblex) the difference is the UX has the slow 2,1, 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8th second shutter speeds; whereas, the U-model only goes down to 1/30 (?). I like the camera's results a lot and I've been wanting to add a 2:1 camera to my lineup.
I saw that, which is not correct for my camera. I dug a little more and found references to possibly a modification to the U model to add the slow speed ability. So I'm really not sure. I think the U model is fairly uncommon in comparison to the UX, from sales I've seen.

Another annoying question. To create a longer exposure out of say multiple 2-sec exposures, is it a rock-solid tripod that enables that or does the camera inherently take a second picture without worry about vibration, etc? I typically carry a pretty light tripod.
If the camera is set to multi-exposure, the entire drum just keeps going, spinning multiple times to make the multiple exposures as long as the cable release is held down. It goes 360 degrees though so inherently there will be time delay between each picture, but it's rock solid. I generally use a pretty light tripod.
For this photo, to decrease the delay between exposures, I cranked the exposure dial from 2" to 1/8 in between photos to make it spin faster, then moved it back to 2" when it was about to open the slit. Nothing bad seems to have happened from what I can see of the negative, which is plenty sharp. In comparison, the Widelux F7 doesn't have multi-exposure for longer exposure times, but I found that I could manually do them by pulling the drum back all the way to the far side and releasing it for another exposure - but this usually creates a double-image effect or general unsharpness, though it's worked okay once or twice. The Noblex is certainly much more capable in that regard, which was important for me with a 120 camera and commonly shooting at f/16. I love this camera, though it is admittedly butt-ugly!

I used a 150U for a time as well. Mine had a problem with banding at slow shutter speeds, so in low light, I often had to do multiple exposures to "build up" the negative. I remember once doing 16 exposures (!) for one photo, which seemed absurd, but the negative turned out perfectly sharp.
Incidentally, my 150U had front rise as well.

I've half a mind to complain to someone in the state park management department. Behind that tree there is a massive and ugly cell phone tower that was constructed sometime between now and last time I visited this WMA, completely ruining the landscape. I have no idea how such a ridiculous, ugly placement of a cell tower, and not even one of the "camouflaged" ones, was approved. There is actually a little viewing area up on the top of the hill to the left, where the cell tower becomes the most prominent feature of the lookout area. What a disappointment. John, I've enjoyed photographing old machines like this with soft focus. There is certainly much carefully designed lines and craftsmanship to appreciate with various cameras and ways of looking at it.

Austin - I so hope I can get to see some of your work in person some day. In the above example...those dark shadows, those blacks...my guess (from what I can barely see) is that there is a richness that simply cannot be conveyed here. Frustrating!
I just got back from a quick visit to Seattle and was regularly reminded of the things Tuco, Austin, et.al see in the pacific northwest. Flying in at night I could see hilly areas enveloped in ground fog and I think of the graveyard photos with the fog, etc... There was plenty of overhead mist that didn't reach the ground like in Austin's photo above.. Got to descend through some of that. Got some miles in on foot walking in the city and saw those fleeting sunlight opportunities you guys sometimes get. Trees are different than here judging by watching out the light rail south of the city. I'd like to have spent more time.. It's got some similarities to my area in terms of climate, light, but is also very different!

Good photography and vintage motorcycle engines are two things I never get tired of, thanks John O.
John Layton, thanks for the vote of confidence. To be honest, there isn't a lot of detail in the shadows of the image above; it was before sunrise and still fairly dark. In general, pictures do lose a fair bit of quality on the computer screen. As for a show, I'm plotting something big for next year, though the place I'm plotting it to be in has no idea yet. :-) Wish me luck!
jp, I'm glad to you got a taste of the Pacific Northwest. One thing I like about living here is that, from my house in Portland, I can drive an hour west and reach the ocean, or alternatively, I can head east up the Columbia River Gorge and about an hour later, I'm in the sunshine, in a landscape that's almost desert. If you're ever in Portland, please don't hesitate to drop me a line. Here're some foggy cemetery photos:

excellent! I like the gentle foreground line and the tree being different but still strong. Nothing wrong with no shadow detail if it looks right in the end result.

Thomaston Maine. I really dig how smoothly things go into oof with the 75mm tessar... The depth of field, perpendicular lines, and the way the overcast light models on those shapes provides the separation of scene elements as needed.

Mike, Pat, Louis, Tuco, Thank you. Honestly, I hadn't planned to make a photo, but as I sat there staring at my dad's ashes (and talking to them), the thought struck me that it was a picture. As a photographer himself, I know my dad would have understood.
I scattered him a couple of different places in the Columbia River Gorge that day, including on the highest point of Horsethief Butte (below, at left). I like the fact that every time I pass by now, I can think of him and give him a wave.

Thanks for your comments.
In this region people are speaking traditional Spanish.
Even in the Basque Country (where Bilbao is) people can speak Spanish and are very friendly. Foods are excellent everywhere in the north of Spain. I strongly recommend to visit.

I could, but I don't want to. :-) Seriously, I can see the appeal of the crop; the man in black is an important element, really the reason I took the picture in the first place. On the other hand, I like the shape of the two trees bracketing the Wishing Well, and I also like the dark emptiness of the streets, both below and on the right side. Honestly, I rarely even consider cropping, as the composition is done in the moment of photographing, but maybe I should.
As a side note, I'm told the Wishing Well is one of the weirdest bars in Portland. I haven't been in there, but after hearing that, I want to check it out!

Yes wonderful picture, you worked the format perfectly.
At-Ats getting ready to enter town, I mean gantry cranes at the shore... A few photos from my quick visit to Seattle.
I was interested in the shapes and simple three-tone design of the street, crosswalk, and background. Enough shapes and lines and tones for artistic expression.

And the gum wall. I didn't see the space needle (low cloud ceiling) or go into any starbucks, but the gum wall was pretty cool and more cities should have such a place.

Jason, I worked in the stevedoring industry for over 23 years until I retired at the end of 2018. Equipment used on the docks certainly seems to be the inspiration in some of the Star Wars movies. The Super Panamax container cranes in your photo do look a little like At-Ats. :)

Thank you CB!
I was a bit anxious taking the shot, as there was a pretty large alligator nearby under a thatch of trees taking a snooze. The only thing between him and I was about 50 feet and my van which blocked his view so I had to look every once in a while to make sure he was not coming from under my van. A little anxious since I have missed a gator before in the muck about 10 feet from my feet! But I really enjoy the marsh and all the nature it nurtures.
Kind regards,
Darr

Ha, I've had black bears in my back pocket but I think I'll leave the crocodilians to you and Bryan.:) At any rate, the camera lens seems to unfurl land, sky and water in a unique way down in your part of the world--probably the work of several lifetimes to explore it all.

Not only pleased to find this composition, but the detail of the woods poking through the snow to provide some texture.. In directional light you get texture from the snow crystals and shapes. In overcast, you either get no texture or rely on this cookies and cream ice cream texture from not-just-snow.

Trees in fog. Used Photopills to plan this shot...was planning for a sunrise between the trees but heavy cloud cover combined with the fog to totally block out the sun. Except for the cloud cover, conditions would have been ideal for the sun to appear as an opaque disc in the fog, but no such luck. Shot on Ilford Delta 100, Mamiya RZ67 II with 90mm lens, cropped to square format, scanned on Epson V800. Still mulling over the processing.

Really nice photos being posted recently by all. Sorry I haven't been doing my share.
But here's the water trough behind Pratt's sheep barn on a rainy, windy day. 80mm lens with Rollei i.r. film, scanned from print.

OK here we go...
Me Too! Terrific image. My first thought was I was viewing much snow in a winter scene but NO it's dunes!

Thanks you guys. When I go back to the same dune locations, it's fascinating to see how much the sand shifts. Things appear and disappear again constantly.

Wonderful photo, Tuco. How's the sand in regards to keeping your camera gear free of it?
Austin, you photos have such wonderful tonality!

Bravo !
That's some pretty tricky exposure on number 16, you pulled it off nicely!
I always feel you capture this incredible vast sense of spaciousness and time in a lot of your shots, Austin. This one is a perfect example of that.

Thanks Peter. My camera bag gets a lot of sand in it sometimes. And I do get sand on the cameras too. I have a rocket blower of course. But so far no equipment problems due to the sand.

I like that two-tier perspective. I recently got a Noblex 135U. It's been a lot of fun too.
Nice perspective. Lots of good work lately folks.
Noblex users unite! ;)
