Nana, all of these shot are wonderful. The lighting and pose of this model in particular caught my eye. I love 6x7 format and have a prized RB67. I bought a Pentax 67 that seemed wonderful but there was something wrong on this camera with the film advance and the camera shop gave me a refund. You have shown in several of these shots that the Pentax 67 lenses are outstanding![ QUOTE=Nana Sousa Dias;1242020]133467

Wonderful is an understatement. You're really pushing the photography limits well to the unknown. The visual content of your photograph is as rich as its caption, a sign of true inspiration.

That's definitely it Bill. I read that it was hit by lightning, and that by the time the fire department got there, it was too late to save it.

I'm so glad I got it. My 10 inch Ilex Caltar left a lot of messiness in the sky because I had to use some front rise and the coverage isn't good enough for that so it's a pain to print. I feel better to hear it was lightning and not some drunk Yahoo out on a destruction binge. I really appreciate your work and have been watching it for a couple years.

Thanks. I appreciate your saying that.

I was thinking the same thing about the mercantile building. Everything is impermanent, but the fact that it was an act of nature and not some destructive urge makes is easier to bear.

Thanks again,

It's hard to really compare on the computer, especially with post-processing sharpness added and so on. I find the Fuji lens plenty sharp, but I'd be surprised if if there was any significant difference between it and a Rolliflex (or most other medium format cameras).

Very nice distribution of trees through the frame! The dark & darker tones make it interesting, but I bet it'd be good in other lighting conditions too.

A recent photo of rock, barnacles, periwinkles and shadows at Marshall Point, Port Clyde Maine. Most people come here to photograph the lighthouse (of Forrest Gump fame, and many postcards and calendars). The rocks here are fantastic though.

Thanks Jason. "Hole-in-the-Ground" (it's official name) is an interesting place. I would love to see it in a different light but we were just passing though. Actually, though it's almost impossible to see here, this is really a picture of my son. He's that little speck way down there in the middle of the trail. :-) Your picture is inspiring me to head out to the coast. I like the perfect triangle shadow with the white pebbles. It makes me think of a game board or some sort of inscrutable hieroglyphics.

Thank you. I really appreciate your saying that. I used Tri-X for the photo above. I've had some troubles with banding with my Noblex at slow shutter speeds (a common problem I gather) so until I get it fixed I've been using faster film as a workaround. It's something I'm going to have to get sorted out. Anyway, as far as developing goes, I've been outsourcing it for awhile now. For 120 I use Citizen's Photo here in Portland. They've never done me wrong, they have a very quick turnaround, and at five bucks a roll, it's worth it to me. I'm pretty sure they're using D-76, but in any case it's nothing exotic. Thanks again!

Thanks Renato; I was familiar with Moholy-Nagy but not Carl Chiarenza, so that's good for me to research. I have been studying other photographers like Paul Caponigro, Minor White, Coburn, Man Ray, etc.. We have many quarries here, so rocks are a ubiquitous material of shade/texture/shape here.

Hi Austin,
Are the woods from the eruption all those years ago? Great pics.
Yes, believe it or not, those trees have been floating there since 1980. It's hard to really get the scale here, but there is an enormous mat of them that slowly drifts around the lake. What happened to Spirit lake from the eruption is really astounding, and sobering too, for it is also a graveyard.
Thanks for the kind words on the picture.

Jeff, how are you getting along with your Hasselblad? I hoped you would be posting shots from it by now.

Hey Gary:

I'd hoped to be farther along with my film work by now also. I hit a snag early on with a mechanical problem on the Hasselblad - the syncing between film back and camera was off giving me overlapping negatives. Once I got that fixed and working properly, my local lab went belly-up. I took that as a message for the analog god's that I should be developing my own negatives. Accordingly, I've been rehabilitating some vintage equipment from my father's old darkroom (cleaning those old Nikor SS tanks has been a pain) and hope to start creating some unique smells in my kitchen soon. The upside is I found and saved a nice little cache of Hewes 120/220 reels that Dad was going to toss in the trash. Keep an eye out for me to post some work in the not too distant future.

Regards;

Jeff

Jeff, I'm glad you are getting things lined out. I am a fan of your work on MATA, especially your black and white conversions. For me, film has that something extra that digital misses. I will keep an eye out for your posts when you are ready.

During a recent stay in a trappist monastery in France I was asked to photograph a beautiful old statue (which I did with the 8x10 and will show later here). The "task" was the face / bust but at the last moment I grabbed the yashica tlr and played with some details. After a long night in the darkroom and this came out:

Thanks Tim. In my hurry to get the power washer's hands I totally blew the exposure; when you hold the negative up to the light, the left side looks virtually clear. Anyway though, I salvaged it the best I could. I'm no street photographer, but I do love those little moments of serendipity. Thanks again!

I really like the 6x12 format and I know it's only a matter of time before I get into 4x10 :) BTW, not sure if I loaded the back wrong or if this is normal Horseman behavior because the image was composed as shown but the film lettering is backwards.

Nice composition. Uncommon to see flowers with the panoramic back but I like it.

Now my 6x17 back does that, with the upside-down film markings, but my 612 Horseman doesn't. Your image also looks reversed L-R though? Did you you have the camera upside-down, like with a tripod that you can mount the column upside-down to get lower to the ground?

Thank you Bryan! This is my first time with panoramic backs and so far, I really like how it makes you look at the scenes. This came from a test roll that I should to make sure the back was good so I rushed through the roll and even made some portraits that look really interesting.

The image (minus the film border) is exactly the way the flowers were if seen directly w/o camera. The camera was mounted the right side up and I think Renato's response nails the mistake I made by mounting the back with the advance lever down.

Thank you Renato - you are exactly correct. I noticed the lever on the bottom side and found it to be odd but the back still felt natural so I didn't think much of it. Now I know how to fix this for the next roll. Thanks again!

Good stuff, as usual, Austin. Thanks Peter. I gather that this area, the Zumwalt Prairie, is one of the largest remaining grasslands of its type (it's owned by the Nature Conservancy). It was very peaceful there, and also full of life; in less than an hour, I saw an owl, an eagle, and a coyote. I'd recommend it (along with the nearby Wallowa Mountains) to anyone interested in exploring northeastern Oregon. Thanks again!

I could hanger on my wall and look at this photography for hours... It's a pleasure when perfect composition becomes intuitive, instinctive, as a second nature,
(in doubt, take the picture and look upside down... Near the same path following the wire from the right upper corner till the left bottom corner as with the shadow - the same path design by the shadow of the building...),

I have copied the picture/copy to my computer and flipped it 180º to check it, and that's it! Just perfect,

Cheers,

Renato

This one strikes me as weird in a way. I know it was level, because my RB-67 was on a tripod with bubble levels on both horizontal axes. The signs and barrel in the lower left confirm this...yet the building seems canted to the right. The backward leaning is from tilting the camera up slightly to get the upper window into the frame, and was expected. For me, though, it takes away some of the static elements of the image and makes it more dynamic.

Then again, I could be wrong.

This is a photo that I took from the first roll of 120 film (TMax 400) that I've put through the Toyo View 45E using the Calumet C2 roll film holder and the Schneider Kreuznach Radionar 105mm f/4.5 lens. That grey blur on the lower right corner is my hand because I had to trip the shutter manually and the lens was mounted on a recessed lens board. The photo is of the Golden Gate Bridge as seen from Land's End in San Francisco. The negative was scanned using a borrowed Canoscan 9000.

Lovely Asutin... filters used? I love how well you use space.

Thanks. I thought this was a good scene for the Noblex. I didn't use a filter. The light was very harsh and I didn't want to boost the contrast any more. As it is, I underexposed the neg a bit. My thinking at the time was that I wanted the house to be as dark as possible while still retaining a little detail, but I think I overdid it a tad. If I could do it again (a familiar refrain), I would have given it a fuller exposure and then darkened just the house in printing. That might have better given the picture the cruel, blasted-out, white-light quality I imagined in my head. So it goes...

Snay: I tried to stop myself from liking your two shack photographs, because old shacks are the kind of cliches that attract us LF types, but I can't - they are really well done! I particularly like the first, simple geometric shape, nice handling of sky and clouds. Red filter, or is that just the intensity of light at altitude?

That's a good idea. I'd need to post it in the Safe Haven thread because some years I only hiked with my digital camera. But it's amazing how much the sand shifts around. One year the trees were on level ground relative to each other. The dead tree had more branches than today and the living tree's branch drops lower and lower each year.

Thanks, Guys. Joe, the photo was from about 1995, shot using a Rollei TLR and Technical Pan film developed with TD-3. If I remember rightly, I used one really big softbox. Unfortunately, I really hate the background on the negative, and so I played around in Photoshop. Basically, I added some textures to parts of the photo.

I used an Orange Filter. There are so many of them where I live at and after passing them on a daily basis for over two years now I figured I would take a couple of photos. The real reason I took them wasn't so much because I wanted shack photos, I was testing out a light seal fix I did on my RZ67. They came out better than I thought they would. There are hundreds of these shacks floating around where I live.

You can start smelling it about 200 feet away I guess. I don't notice the smell any further away. Hi Austin

Maybe a tad OT in this thread but just for fun here's a link to a shot I made with the Fujinon 250 I got from you on my Technika. I'm really impressed with the detail that can be seen in the boats which are less than 1/8 inch in the negative.

I like both of those a lot Bryan. The one of the dresses is, as you said, on the verge of being abstract, and yet it's also of a recognizable subject at the same time. It's right on the line, and it has so many interesting patterns going of visually.

The bbq makes for a really bold shape (sort of a pac-man-esque mouth) and frames the woman nicely. I think this is really well seen in black and white. Anyway, good stuff!

Great. I like all those a lot too. Are you pushing that 400TX?

Corran
2-Aug-2015, 22:47
Not this time, though I should've. It was cloudy which is when I usually would push of course to increase contrast, and rate the film at ~800. This time I was going to develop in something different, but then I got lazy and developed both rolls at once so scrapped that idea. The result was fairly low-contrast negatives so I dropped the blacks down in post. The Plus-X came out perfect since I rated it properly.

For Tri-X at roughly 250-320 I have been enjoying SPUR HRX, while at 400-800 or higher I am using Acufine, which is the best all-purpose developer I've used.

Tuco,

Thanks for the note. In regard to the scripts here is what they entail: The Squarespace one is a script that lets the system know what kind of device that you are viewing on and what the screen size is. It then delivers the images and content at the best possible resolution and size for the device. The Typekit script is what allows a custom font to be delivered so that the site looks as it should on your device. Nothing devious here. I hope that clears things up. :)

Ha! I did think that those two pictures went together well, but it's not something I intended at the time I made them. I've always found it fascinating though, how pictures on the same roll (like those two) or taken within a short period of time often have a kind of synchronicity. It's almost like you find the subjects or even shapes that are occupying your subconscious mind, or else your mind is riffing on a symbolic level, like okay, there's a bird, and now, voila, a nest! Hopefully that doesn't mean that my son Finn there is a meal for that giant bird...

@austin granger, your work is wonderful and inspiring.

Thanks Jonathan. I appreciate that. I enjoyed looking through your stuff on flickr. You are obviously open to seeing the extraordinary in the everyday, and in my opinion, that's half the battle right there. I like the swing remnants especially, but also thought the bobby pins photo was inspired; presented so simply like that, they become loaded with significance, shorthand for a lot of different memories that will be brought by the viewer. Cheers, Austin
