RPX vs APX? In 25 and 100 ISO?

Thanks.

I can't say. I have no experience comparing those films.

Long time no see. It has been a very interesting winter - an adventure with a stray cat led to huge lymph nodes which looked like a relapse of the CLL, but which, I was certain, were bartonellosis ("cat scratch fever"). They have become much less tender and quite a bit smaller after the appropriate antibiotics, so I may yet chisel away at a few more of the films in my freezer. Let's celebrate with some still life/still alive flowers (500cm, Distagon 4/50, XP2 Super @ISO100, HC-110, X1 scans, cropped for printing):

Nice pics, Chris. I was wondering how things were going with you. Great to know the CLL is not misbehaving, but must have made you a little anxious. Great to hear from you. Roll up the sleeves and get into that freezer stockpile!

One morning we had quite a deep sticky snow deposited overnight. I managed to get my truck stuck in my own driveway. Because it's a truck and it has big knobby tires and goes anywhere, or something like that. It got stuck good and shovelling it out didn't work. So I grabbed by Rolleiflex and made photos till my brother showed up with his plow truck.

Austin keep the cars and trucks coming as they are always enjoyable. Been shooting older cars and trucks myself lately, mostly in my neighborhood. I’m calling the series The Streets of San Francisco. Recently picked up a scanner so if I can figure out how to work it I’ll start posting images.

Went out this afternoon to my favorite park intending to shoot some 8x10, but out of nowhere some nasty storms formed and it started thundering and raining a bit. I still went down the trail a bit in the rain and saw this beautiful scene come out from the mist. Luckily I had thrown in my bag a TLR.

Rolleicord "Art Deco," 75mm Triotar w/ R25 filter, Acros 100, Pyrocat:

http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/amicalola-2967ss.jpg

Right after I took this image I heard some sounds up the trail that sounded like someone had just opened up a spigot to full-blast. I looked down and water was suddenly flowing past me. Never seen this before, despite having hiked on this trail in the rain before, so I snapped a pic with my phone:

http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/amicalolaerfloodss.jpg

The trail was a high "edge" so it wasn't an issue, but when I got back up to my car my phone started blaring emergency sounds and warning me of a flash flood warning. Yeah thanks I noticed :). At the start of the trail, a cliff had turned into a 20 foot waterfall from run-off.

Thanks.

I've given some thought to getting a licence and skydive with a medium format camera that has a WLF. I'm thinking of the camera harnessed to the chest and you look down at the WLF to compose. Do think that's feasible? I imagine tilting your head down or reaching to rewind would throw your balance all off in a free fall or something?

Not sure how feasible that would be. I used a Sony Hi8 video camera mounted on the top of my helmet and a Nikon N2000 mounted on the front of the helmet. Rigged up a micro switch inside of a nipple from a baby bottle to trigger the shutter. Used a Newton ring sight https://www.square1.com/manufacturers/square1/p522.asp#NewtonRingSight to frame the images.

As far as medium format goes a friend of mine use to jump with a Hasselblad ELX mounted on a helmet and I new another skydiver that used a Fuji 6x9 rangefinder and would just reach up and wind it by hand after each shot. Think he just put the shutter release cable in his mouth. This is all old stuff, stopped jumping in 95 after an object strike on a BASE jump. Decided large format photography would be a lot safer.

Okay, thanks for the info. I have done a static line jump in the past. Perhaps I should do one of those tandem jumps to get a feel for the conditions before investing into the idea.

Playing around with the Noblex 150U I just bought in downtown Dahlonega again:

http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/noblex-3129_stitchsss.jpg

The above is wider than normal because what I was actually doing was experimenting with a 3-shot stitch to make 360° panoramic images. The above is cropped slightly because unfortunately there is a big light pole right next to me, but the whole image worked really well other than that and I was able to do this:

Bryan, while I recognize that very long exposures are a fact of life for slow (or even fast) film at many wooded brooks, it is very refreshing to see water sparkle in a photo. The novelty of water as white misty blur has long since worn of on me, though, of course, it csuits some images. Anyway, I really enjoy this image.

Thank you both. Philip, I was happy to find this waterfall with the sun actually shining onto it and the sparkles evident. As you say, it's fairly uncommon, especially in areas of the southern Appalachians where sometimes the sun will just never be in a position to do that.

Me too! I love the huge jump in both flexibility (with more shutter speeds) and image quality over the 35mm Widelux. Of course the Widelux is much smaller and has a faster lens, and its mechanical...I'm a little worried about the life of the Noblex but this one was just serviced and upgraded internally so hopefully it'll be with me a long time.

Here's two more panoramas from downtown Dahlonega. Now I need to get out on the trail...

Ha, if I ever quiz you on whether you've packed your Ten Essentials, seven of 'em better not be cameras...:)

Definitely some kind light here--I could see you printing up some killer triptychs if you could find a series of scenes that speak to one another.

Corran
22-Apr-2019, 17:26
These "stitched" images could also be printed traditionally as triptychs I've realized, though that would be a bit weird.

I have a special "frame" here waiting to find the right diptych set to put in it...I think a "top and bottom" shot of a waterfall. Just haven't found it yet.

Thank you. The fill light was provided by the headlights of a car that pulled out of the parking lot during my exposure. Sometimes I get lucky. :-)

I never got a chance to try Acros, but have heard good things about it. I'm a big fan of Agfa APX100, and my own stash is dwindling. Might have to do like you and ration it, saving it for the best shots.

Austin, I really like the dune with grass.

Further North in Washington, our coast has bluffs with wind-tortured trees along the edges. I return to these trails often, this time with the 40mm Distagon and Rollei infrared, scanned from my print.

Here's my final contribution for a few weeks as I'm heading out on my motorcycle to Pensacola tomorrow:

A re-shoot of a scene at Lottie Bay. In 2009 I tried this with the 80mm lens on Rollei infrared. Recently, I went back with a 40mm Distagon for a closer view. (HC100 B development and scanned from an Ilford print)

This has all the elements of 1980's memphis-milano pop art style except the pastel colors! Shapes all over the place, repeating lines and the razor wire (?) is like a squiggly line found in such design.

Thanks Pat! There's lots of great stuff in and around Ocean Springs other than Twelve Oaks (http://ltmcp.org/twelve-oaks-walking-trail/), so if you have time, make a day of it. Don't miss Gulf Islands National Seashore, and if you like shrimp boats go check out the harbor (and there's always lots of birds if you are into that at Inner Harbor Park). And of course Front Beach for some gulf coast views.

PS - be sure to top off the day with a burger at Woody's Roadside :).

24-Jun-2019, 09:29
Thanks Peter! Live Oaks are certainly a treasure. I was just researching them a few days ago, specifically typical ages of these wonderful trees. This one is estimated to be 400 years old. Further down the coast is the Friendship Oak (http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/friendoak-2145s.jpg), estimated at 500 years old, on the Southern Mississippi campus. And in GA, near Brunswick, I just learned of an oak estimated at 900 years old called Lover's Oak. Will be visiting that next time I visit the GA coast.

Oh, and the oldest certified tree is just in Louisiana (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Sisters_Oak). On my list!

The swing-lens Noblex accentuates the large size without diminishing the details further away from the camera.

Lovers Oak is a bit of a disappointment to me. It’s in an old neighborhood, so there are always houses in the background. Also two hurricanes, two tropical storms and an ice storm in 19-months broke off a lot of limbs from the live oaks around here. I suppose all that makes it a greater challenge to photograph.

That tree has an amazing shape, Bryan. Lot's of cool angles. My back feels like the shape of that tree trunk sometimes.

A single frame that fell out its 3-ring binder at some point. It was a bit work finding where it belong. It's from 2013. I took it as a sign to scan it.

Nice magnolia! I was searching all over the place for magnolias in the last month and found this one when I wasn't expecting it, and only had my Century Graphic and 38mm XL lens with me. Oh, and the sun had set moments before. So I got really close to it and held my breath for a 30-second exposure. I'm not sure if I prefer this one or the 4x5 one I posted in the Flowers thread taken with an Aero-Ektar the following day.

What I like about this version is the inclusion of more of the plant's environment. It's ever so slight but enough to know it's not a still life in a studio or something.

I know Ruby Falls / Rock City is the butt of a lot of jokes, in terms of the advertising and such. My mom said my dad never wanted to go because it was a tourist trap, so I wanted to take her. Of course it is, but it is an interesting natural wonder nevertheless. The shuffling in and out of people by the thousands is certainly a bummer. We got there at 7:45am to get the first tour, as I've done that before and the group was tiny, but being summer it was still packed this time. Also, there was a special tour that came in right before us, a bus-full of folks that were let in early. One of the tour guides told me they were taken straight to the falls with none of the movies/sound clips and then straight back out. I think their time in the cave was about 15 minutes. Looked like int'l tourists getting the speed tour of Chattanooga.

Indeed!

Definitely a little bit of Americana--apparently there are only a hundred or so barns left (down from 900 in its heyday, and just half of what existed in the decade that saw my wife and me making regular trips between Birmingham and her folks in Pennsylvania.)

There's one just up the road from me, in a big open field that blooms with yellow flowers (weeds) sometimes in the spring. Gotta get a photo of that someday, but it's just off the road without much area to stop so I'll have to figure out how.

Well, shoot the 8x20 and not the Linhof(s) in case the backwash from a tandem-rig turns it into a parasail.:)

At any rate, I was just mulling over the fact that if I were a real photographer (and not just a reformed trout bum) the real show would be in Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg each summer...definitely a multiformat extravaganza if you're looking for subjects.

Do make time to photograph that old barn. Each time I passed two local old barns I would say to myself that I needed to photograph them. Both collapsed before I got around to it. I'm still kicking myself.

Absolutely true, I have had a few photos in mind that were lost to time as well. CB - years ago I made a photograph of Gatlinburg on a ridge somewhere at dusk, with the lights glowing and the blue hour sunset light in the sky. I can't for the life of me find it though. Might never have made a jpeg of it so I need to dig into my archives (all the *.tiff scans are on my server and deleted from my local work drive).

Here's one more cave image I am happy with from Ruby Falls with the Noblex. I like the dark edges making a sensuous shape around the rocky surface:

Still scanning film from last month's trip to NH.. Bemis Brook Trail, Crawford Notch state park with the Rolleiflex and tmy2. The lines of the bare and blossoming hardwood standing out from the rocks and softwood are moving my eye all over the photo. The water gives it a sense of time and horizontal timeline like music and the budding leaves/blossoms are like notes all connected together like chords and tied together notes in positions somewhat abstracted, rocks are like rests all stacked up, or notes in editing software.

One more from this roll...the last image, on my last roll of Acros 100. Honestly was never a big fan, but it was the cheapest thing at the time and I got a lot of it at discount and did my best to deal with it. Maybe I'll try the new stuff when it comes out here in the USA. Anyway, this is a very remote and lesser-known waterfall in north GA near what was a highly classified nuclear test facility, now WMA - the area still tests high for certain radioactive isotopes. Hiked 8 miles roundtrip today in the scorching heat. The semi-official name for this waterfall is lame so I'm going to call it Lower Radiation Falls. The upper falls I shot on Ilford FP4+ but I haven't finished the roll.

Yes, definitely quite a different landscape here in the deep south, compared to Washington. But even that one arching back all the way to the ground, is unusual. This little conglomeration of roots I have photographed many times over the years, but this might be the best I've done.

Unfortunately no. The lights are pretty dim and they do a little show with music that changes the lights and color. I did a 1/30 exposure which takes a few seconds, so the light was hard to predict. The negative is really thin to begin with. Would love to have a tripod in there...

I like that. The turtle escapes me. I've been saving my stash of Acros for doing mostly long exposures. And now with this talk of introducing a dash-two version kind of makes me regret purchasing that much in the first place.

Corran
12-Jul-2019, 21:30
Yeah I imagine the folks that bought up a bunch at inflated prices are upset. I hope you bought it at normal prices.

I am glad it'll be on the shelf again, and I hope it continues to be good for long exposures on the occasions I need that. I am very happy to leave it in the past for "normal" light. It never quite worked for me in many situations with a large amount of green - which is pretty common here! And a bit of reciprocity failure in dark forest scenes is actually a welcome thing IMO for the natural boost in contrast.

Just bought 40 rolls of T-Max 100 though since the price was so good.

I see the turtle, Tuco...of course I've had more practice: last week I was standing at my bay window and saw what looked like a boat wake moving through my admittedly overgrown lawn toward the house. Took a sip of coffee, wake moved another three feet; another sip, another yard, until at last a two-foot long (common) snapping turtle heaved itself onto the river rocks we have bordering the house and began trying to scrape out a nest. (My excitable Airedale was not amused.)

Of course, the real question is who could draw this turtle: Bryan is probably too young to remember the ads in TV Guide:

Love this one, especially the detail of the strict and formal arrangement of the planters in front, against the detail and opulence of the theater itself. I notice that the cars appear to be from the 60's - 70's, when was this shot taken?

I shot it June 1975, using an odd waist level viewer, bellows type SLR having a pseudo Graflex (i think) lens board holding a no-name 105mm lens.
A few monts later I graduated to a used RB67 that I've been using ever since then...

Back on the T-Max bandwagon! So glad to be back...there's that contrast I was missing!

Shot a test roll, just taking a walk at a very nice park near some of the fanciest Atlanta suburbs with half-million dollar houses everywhere. It was the middle of the afternoon on a weekday but there was a ton of well-to-do looking folks jogging. Hmm. So I ventured off the path into the woods...

(just for comparison, the file from my digital camera at the same time does not have the smooth tones and abstract style of the 70 year older way of doing things.. Part might be color vs. B&W, part might be the gentle highlight handling of film and how I use it. Two full sensor frames shot raw and stitched together)

Bull bar. I'm curious how effective it is. I'd think the larger deer on the east side of the cascades might just go over that instead of under. Were you there for Chief Joseph Days?

austin granger
23-Aug-2019, 09:32
We just missed Chief Joseph Days. We've been meaning to go one of these years, but we do enjoy the peace and quiet as well.

Speaking of animals though, we encountered a black bear on a mini-golf course! The funny thing was that on this particular course, there are a bunch of fake stuffed bears, so when my wife screamed, "bear!" I though she was just kidding around, trying to mess up my putt. But no, it was a very real bear. Fortunately, he/she was more scared of us that we were of it, and quickly ambled off. Our kids were thrilled, and I think will carry that memory for life.
