While the winter scene with the tractor made me think of "COLD," the second winter photo had me on my mental tiptoes wondering what was on the other side of the far hill. The furrows left by the plowing were the leading lines that drew my attention to that spot. Great seeing on your part.

This was with my Rolleiflex, same film, within seconds of his shot. I was done shooting and wanted a snap of him at work.

The biggest difference was the photographer and the development if you study the difference between how his trees are lit and how they are in this snapshot.

I posit tmy2 is a very versatile film which doesn't have a look of it's own, but can have a look a photographer+darkroom worker can impart with practice.

Chrism, I've never seen FP4 look like that either, and I use it all the time! :-) But Michael's right, there's nothing special about development here, it's just that everything was covered in frost. The scene actually looked infrared in person if you can imagine that. Everything was glowing white, with almost no color whatsoever. It was wild! But oh so cold...

Thanks Martin. As Chrism said, for these pictures, I'm using a Noblex rotating lens camera. It results in a perspective that is very wide, but not wide in the same way an ultra wide-angle lens renders things. It's more like if you stitched pictures together, although with the Noblex it's one 6x12cm negative. It can be a tricky camera to compose with, but for some things it works well. Dave, that is a nice batch of photos. I enjoy a Holga once in a while but generally either go for sharp rolleiflex or soft large format, even though a holga can be a happy middle ground.

I do not thing that there is a thread for images for B&W film MF images only.
I use a Kodak Medalist II as my backup/handheld camera when traveling and I am sure that many of us also use a small MF film camera as a backup.
Some are also using a digital one and there are plenty of such images in the "Safe Heaven for Tiny Format" thread.
I personally enjoy more browsing B&W film images in the limited time I have for such so I am selfishly checking if others are so inclined by starting this thread.

If this is a problem, I am sure the Moderators can close the thread and if there is no interest then the thread will die a natural death by starvation, in either case with no harm, no foul done.

On the drive home we stopped at Falling Waters State Park in Florida. This park is home to the "highest waterfall" in Florida. It's actually pretty interesting - there's a little stream that falls into a huge limestone sinkhole. The rain has been terrible recently so I knew it would be flowing really strong (sometimes it is totally dry, it just depends on the weather). Here is a photo I took leaning way out as far as I could from the viewing platform with my Pentax and 35mm Fisheye:

Help! Is this reticulation? Bad developer? I am very bummed. I've re-washed a negative from this roll in distilled water, and it's drying now. But my two best rolls from Scotland seem ruined....

Can you provide a closer sample of the damaged area ?

Reticulation should appear uniformly, unless you developed in a tank and changed temperature dramatically and briefly, affecting only the edge of the roll. Is the damage in the same place in each shot ?

Are you referring to right and left sides? (doesn't look like reticulation to me) What type of film? How was it processed? If you examine the film under light at an oblique angle, can you see any surface problems on either the emulsion or base?

Thanks everyone. It's FP4 developed in Pyrocat 1:1:100 for N-1.5, 8 minutes at 70 degrees. I see the scanning moire, but there is a graininess that I did notice on both of the films I developed yesterday, which showed up looking with the naked eye, and also under a loupe. It's very noticeable on the left and right sides of the scan.

The developer is on the old side, almost at the end of the bottles, and the water temperature in the wash fluctuated from 67-73 degrees I'm afraid. I just checked the negative I rewashed in distilled water, and the problem is still there. I have some new Pyrocat, and I'll mix fresh developer and fixer, and shoot a test roll, to see if the problem continues. Thanks again for your suggestions. I'll report back. But I'm so bummed, because I'm not going to be able to get back to Scotland to reshoot any time soon!

I just noticed problems with some of the film I developed yesterday too. I'm now also wondering whether there is crap that wasn't filtered out in my water supply. So I'm going to have to change the filters too! Here is one on HP5, Pyrocat 1:1:100, N-1 for 10.5 minutes at 70F. This picture has black specks, which makes me think it's crap in the water. I know there's dust from the scan too. Maybe the size limitations here make this hard to see.

Again, thanks to everyone. I'm going to overhaul my systems and hope this gets fixed.

I second this. Had the same kind of thing with a roll of HP5 and re-fixing in a new batch of fixer and re-washing cleared it up. It was almost a haze, and I thought the x-ray machine fogged my film at first, even though I know that's not supposed to happen.

Thank you to everyone who chimed in on my processing issues! I changed the water filters, and made fresh fixer, and I think the problem is solved. My test negative wasn't perhaps the best, as it's a closeup on 4x5, so there's no sky or large swaths of one tone, but there is no visible crap on the negative.
I have not spotted out the dust or scratches.

Yeah, you got right there Charlie! I took time to position the camera over the tracks and settle on the exposure and a couple of times I had to beat a hasty retreat because a train was roundin' the bend. Getting this shot required that I set the focus, exposure and position beforehand and run to the spot after the train heading north had past and wait for it to clear the line of sight before tripping the shutter. Shortly thereafter a train heading south would appear. I envisioned an empty track. A similar situation occurred when photographing US 50 in Nevada looking west from where the road straightens-out from a curve and goes in a straight line for 10 or 20 miles into a snow capped range: The "Loneliest Highway." I could travel down it for a day and not see another car until I got to a location where that shot was possible and aas soon as I step onto the highway the sound of a motor would suddenly appear to by back.

Remember when Alviso was closing? The San Jose Mercury News reported that it was a ghost town before the inhabitants had a chance to move out. People went out there and thinking it was abandoned carted off with their belongings.

Dave, you have a good eye for medium format, and that works with plastic cameras too.

This I took on Christmas day. Winter was a few weeks late this year; we're 100% into it now. But Christmas was 50f and calm, so I managed to convince most of my extended family to walk the breakwater (2 mile round trip walk into the harbor). Managed nice photos with the Rolleiflex and with the digital camera.

I'm starting to re-print 6x12 negatives from my archived files.
Here's a Konika 750 infrared photo of an Ojibwe teepee.
It's at the historical North West Company Fur Post (1804). Pine City, MN.
Used a 75mm Super Angulon, a 4x5 Cambo Wide, and a Horseman 6x12 roll film holder.
I love the way K750 Infrared film renders manmade objects in a natural environment...

I feel otherwise, I feel Austin has a measuring rule in tenths of millimetres inside his head, there is a "rule of thirds" in the reflection of himself on the glass.
This starts to annoying me. :p

Hi Renato,

Thank you for the kind words. I'm pretty new at this -- is "posterization" an issue with my scan? The exposure? The developing? All or any of the above? I printed a 10x10 enlargement of this and I see detail in the shadows, so maybe I'm misunderstanding the term. Do you mean the silhouetting of the upper branches? Should I have metered for something other than the trunk of the tree? Thanks!

Hi Rael,

Postarization appears in the shadow areas where dark tones without texture "seems" to have been raised to a lighter grey tone, it's a factor in post processing or scanning software stage,

If you are scanning, then higher bit depth will solve the problem. Because of how an image is coded, there are less bits used the darker you go. When you apply curves to adjust tones in a scan, it can create posterization in areas with low bit counts. So in B&W, do 16 bit scans if you can, and in color 48 bit scans. Then you have very high resolution in your tone response and when curves are applied you have plenty of room to manipulate. The good news is your scans may be fine - you should check your master images for posterization. They may be fine. When JPEGs are made for the web there is a lot of optimization to lower file size and if you used too low of a Jpeg compression you will see banding too.

Today I was out in the country and found a beautiful new place to explore, a wilderness preserve that's not even on the map. I did some searching and it's pretty much unknown, and has clearly been kept well hidden - there was just a multitude of ducks, egrets, and herons at this place, numbering in the hundreds. It sounded like helicopters when they all got startled.

I couldn't go far as the place is so overgrown I need a machete to get through the brush. Going to borrow one from a friend and explore further when I can. Here's one shot from the preserve I shot.

Thanks Bryan. I could have adjusted the picture to make it more dynamic, and I did think about it, but then it struck me that as it was made in the half-light at dawn, this representation was actually more "realistic."
That's a fantastic place you're exploring there! Is the moss blowing in the wind? I like how it's all flowing in the same direction.

Yes, we had unusually high winds yesterday after a storm front passed. It was hard to keep the camera steady because what the tripod was on, and I was standing on, is years and years of that Spanish moss and other organic stuff that normally is on the bottom of the lake. It was springy and the tripod would bounce when the wind blew, and sometimes I would just start sinking into the muck if I stayed in one place too long!

Superb results, I would use a radical approach with a fine grain film as ASA25, probably had choose XTol, but HC-110 came very well too. These shots fits the "trees" thread too,

It's a grain elevator, part of a mill complex built in 1910. I've always thought it was an interesting building, so when I heard it was being torn down, I thought I'd better get down there and make a picture. Well that makes a lot more sense. I assumed big elevators were concrete only so that's why I didn't make the connection. Great photo and thanks for the article link.

Not really, I'm at the extreme south of the country and the games will be played in Rio, so with a skyrocketing prices of hotels and restaurants and a full 24 hr TV coverage my lazy instincts are in full expansion,
