A place stuck in time. Nice work.

Love the wind chime!
Thanks. The wind chimes were the first thing to catch my eye, and then I saw the woman under the blanket and the old truck and the antennae atop the old victorian, and I thought; "Now there's a story," even if I don't know what it is.

jp
12-Feb-2015, 18:48
Not only the story potential, but it's got good lines and sort of a dynamic composition. I'd have been enamored with the truck as a primary subject as well.

Old vehicles and well used photogenic houses go together well: https://flic.kr/p/eijwWV

Here's some more woods and snow from Maine. We've got plenty of that this time of year; it's not going away anytime soon. Trees in my neighborhood don't stay up very well as the soil is not very deep.

I just received a RB67 with the 6x8 conversion.
Alas, the baffle will not flip up with the mirror and something is wonky with the 3.6/90 shutter.
Cheap buys cheap. Can anyone recommend a good repair facility?
Just ordered a second body and a 127mm is on the way.

Yummy. I've made that Wellington too. I followed Gordon Ramsay's videos on how to do it. I've also tried Acufine's ACU-1 to push 320TXP to 6400 as they say you can. It must be the old 320TXP formula they refer to because I didn't get that good of results with the version they made before it was discontinued on 120 roll.

Corran
16-Feb-2015, 16:07
Yeah I've tried pushing that far w/ Acufine or ACU-1 before but got the best results pre-flashing the film. However I can't get ACU-1 anymore. The only place I can find that sells it is B&H but they won't ship it. I need to get up to NY again and buy a bunch to take back. I find Tri-X pushes better than HP5. I actually just bought several bricks of Tri-X in 120, slightly outdated, for a couple bucks a roll.

Here I just developed the film for 30 minutes, with agitation at 10 minutes and 20 minutes. Unscientific, but it worked. Actually overdeveloped a couple of frames. But it was a rather sloppy metering job...

Meagan's hobby is cooking so I leave that stuff to her!

Two weeks ago I shot Small Falls at Wallace St. Pk. with a Hasselblad 80mm lens and Rollei infrared film. The sky was heavily overcast and a mist was just starting to fall.
Naturally, I thought I could do better with the 4x5 and 210mm lens, so I went back today. I was cursed with dappled sunlight on a beautiful day. Tomorrow I'll develop the film, but I doubt that it will be able to hold the sunlit areas from total blow-out.

Thanks jp. That's an excellent shot of the cabin. The snow feels just right. And I want to follow the footprints inside.

Tuco, the only trolls under our Fremont Bridge are the ones looking for pictures (like me). I've seen quite a few pictures of Seattle's troll but yours is one of the better ones. I should really get up there one of these days.

I like this one Austin. Tuco is right the foot prints are ummm leading. The texture and shading on the roof are nice. Looks like a nice place.
My brother is in Lubec. They are having some major problems with the snow. Some of the snap shots from there remind me of the mountain snows in Mammoth Lakes. There are several feet, some of it piled up to the street signs. He is waiting for a plow so he can get to his house. More is on the way this weekend.

Hope you enjoy it.

jp
18-Feb-2015, 20:57
We were comparable in generous snowfall to Lubec area, then last weekend, they got a couple feet and we got a couple inches, so they are ahead now. I sometimes park next to the road in case I can't get my driveway plowed out. I'll be out photographing more after we get some more next few days. The house is very nice to photograph, and for coons to live in. The porch roof fell down (on this place) in a big snowstorm we had November 2.

T
Lith printing is using a high energy developer like Fotospeed LD-20 or Kodalith. After I developed the print in the lith developer I wasn't happy with the print so I used some photo bleach, bleached the print way back and redeveloped it in regular paper developer and this print was the results. Part of the creativity is knowing when to "Pull" the print out of the lith developer and immediately immerse it in stop. It produces some interesting peachy, pink highlights.

Been shooting a bit lately with my Linhof 70. I had my camera with me at work as I was setting up for a concert so I took a somewhat abstract shot of our Steinway 9' grand piano. Available light (stage lighting) with 100-speed film so it was a pretty slow exposure - I think I had to underexpose slightly for 1/30.

This reminds me. I shot this image Saturday. I've been wanting to grab a shot like this for a while. Occasionally you'll find these huge masses of gnats flying in a big ball (reminds me of bird flocks flying in unison). If the light is just right it glints off of them and is a very interesting sight. In this instance if I moved even a few feet either direction to get the tree out of my shot you couldn't see them (they also need to be in front of a dark background). This isn't a perfect representation but it's close. It was really hard to focus with an RF. They move very fast so a fast shutter speed is essential.

That trestle is something I have wanted to capture for years. There is s shot on I-40 between Nashville and Knoxville at a place where Caney Fork crosses nearly in the same place where the rail crosses. There is an old trestle there that I always wanted to capture. As for the gnats, they are yet to come out here. Mowed Saturday without getting molested.

Haven't shot square in years, since I sold my Yashica 124G, but a Super Ikonta BX found its way here so I tried it out despite the rain we had today. Very nice camera. I like 6x6 a lot but the 124G just didn't click. This 80mm f/2.8 Tessar seems pretty nice.

Thanks! I don't normally shoot in the rain but I needed to get out of the house. I was probably pushing it shooting at f/4 or so handheld at like 1/25 I think but it worked out. With yucky grey days underexposing the neg and overdeveloping with Acufine usually gets me a decent tonal scale.

In February of 2015 my wife, Rachel and I travelled to England and went to visit the university where she received her doctorate. That university is Royal Holloway. It is a beautiful, historic property with character and incredible light at every corner. This series is part of my attempt to capture the light and feeling of being there.

In my quest to see light and shadow better I continue to look at things from different angles, focal points and intent. This photograph was made in the kitchen at Lacock Abbey. One of the worlds first photographs was made at this Abbey by Fox Talbot at a window in the main residence. I also made a photograph at the same window which I will post at a later date. My quest to see light and shadow continues.

One more for today.

Tate Modern, London, February 2015

Influences
This year I want to expand my visual vocabulary and my way of seeing. While I was in Europe this year and with that in mind I worked to try to see things differently keeping in mind images from the past that have moved me. This is an obvious homage to a famous image and while similar I feel that it is strong enough on its own to share. As I make images influenced by others I will continue exploring until I find my own true voice.

Tim: I really like your photograph at the Tate Gallery. I'm curious what image you had in mind when you took it? To me, the first thoughts that come to mind are Kertesz, who took pictures at a similar angle from his window (I'm thinking of one of a park in snow, can't remember the title), and Strand, whose "Wall Street" has some similarity in the scale of the people to the environment. Which goes to prove that photography is broad enough, and ambiguous enough, to allow all of us to see different similarities between a given image and those in our "memory banks." But your Tate is one image I would be happy to hang on my wall!

Mr. Lewin,

The image that popped in my head when I saw this shot was the Paul Strand Wall Street image. The background shapes, the motion, people, the light and the feel. When we went to the Tate Modern I was not particularly inspired by the exhibits (the Tate Britain on the other hand was spectacular) so I began looking for images. I was on the third floor looking down and saw this view. I had my Rolleiflex loaded with Acros 100 and it was quite dark in the building. If I remember correctly the shutter speed was 1/4 or 1/8 or something around there. With no tripod I hand-held the camera resting an edge on the railing. I was lucky to get this moment.

I love that fact that other accomplished photographers might want to hang an image of mine on their wall and am always happy to share. If you would like a print send me a PM with details and we can get something together for you.

Thanks again for the kind words.

Tim

Whatever a gelb mittel filter is for yellow. I only use tmax 400 for MF b&w and develop it in pyrocat HD. It's a solid combinational that can handle any lighting given adequate exposure.

Thanks jp. The rain drove me inside this old wooden church where the piano was waiting. To my eye, the shapes of the window, the hymn books, the keys and the bench descended to the right almost like musical notes. In any case, it was a nice place to rest awhile and make a picture.

How are you able to keep the distortion down, keeping it level?

The banding seems to only show up at slow shutter speeds; I've heard that can be an issue, especially if the camera's been sitting for a long time. I've been trying to use faster shutter speeds (and very fresh batteries) to see if that help. As far as the distortion, yeah, I've been totally leveling everything, and also am trying to choose subjects where the distortion is masked, as in the above photo. Despite the problems, it's neat to have a whole new world of possibilities opened up as far as compositions goes.

Well, I am still exploring, looking for direction, vision and a unique perspective. Am I the only one that pretty much hates everything I shoot? I can tear any one of my images apart and struggle to really find anything that I feel 100% happy with but I will carry on...

This is the continuation of the series of images that I made while traveling with my (vey patient) wife in England and France in February of 2015. These were all made on a Rolleiflex 2.8f on Fuji Acros film.

Scott - you are not alone, but I find your images very imaginative. I know what works for me - put them in a drawer and come back in a few weeks or month, pull them out and see how you feel then...or, just send the prints you don't like to me, but for gods sake, don't tear them up. And forget 100% satisfaction. Shoot for 75%.

No, but I am very critical of myself and I do like taking more control over the lighting as opposed to 100% strictly found light all the time. I found a video that may be relevant:

I do not thing that there is a thread for images for B&W film MF images only.
I use a Kodak Medalist II as my backup/handheld camera when traveling and I am sure that many of us also use a small MF film camera as a backup.
Some are also using a digital one and there are plenty of such images in the "Safe Heaven for Tiny Format" thread.
I personally enjoy more browsing B&W film images in the limited time I have for such so I am selfishly checking if others are so inclined by starting this thread.

If this is a problem, I am sure the Moderators can close the thread and if there is no interest then the thread will die a natural death by starvation, in either case with no harm, no foul done.

Cheers,

Luc

Austin,

Thank you for the feedback. I'm a bit of the opposite. I despised most every image I make at first and it takes me a bit to see through the haze of perfectionism. Some peoploe asked me on Facebook what I thought was wrong with these images. This was my reply: "nothing is really wrong with these images. I liked them enough to share but I don't have a super strong attachment to them at the moment. Maybe that will change with time. My favourite two of these are the ones with the cross/stained glass and the bench. To me they both incite the best emotion and have a depth of experience.

What I mean by that is that I am hoping that the viewer will take the time to look closer and see things that they missed upon first glance and then feel a sense of satisfaction for looking deeper. To me that is the difference between a "postcard" shot and a true expression of "seeing". I want the viewer to see these as I did. Each one of my "successful" photographs was a moment in life that stopped me and made me pay attention and then to think about something specific in relation to what I was seeing.

This is my journey, to train myself to be able to see these moments and then successfully capture them in a single image that allows each person to take their own journey through my eyes.

The two images of Trafalgar Square on the other hand are just nice, graphic photographs. They don't make me think, explore or ponder. This doesn't make them bad photographs, it just doesn't go quite as deep as I hope to see."

Again, thank you for the feedback.

I am encouraged every time I watch that video. I have just started shooting 120 again and have done poorly with my first 2 rolls. The fist seemed to have good density and sharpness but the scans looked soft and contrasty. The second roll I managed to tear at some point around neg #2. I feel like I am learning photography all over again. I am encouraged every time I watch that video.

I know this is a BORING image but so far it's the best scan I have managed and this is the 2nd and torn roll; P67 with Xenar 150 @ ƒ5.6 Pan F+ in DDX. Just plain overcast lighting, outdoors just barely under the back porch with a light blue mottled BG and a flat flat scan. This has a simple curves layer and a selective color layer only but is sharpened. Now that I think I have a better understanding of what settings the scanner likes I can start working on my lighting ratios and light quality for careful contrast and added interest, then comes the "creativity" if I can muster it; I am eternally hopeful.

Thanks Jonathan. I was happy to come across the cups, which were rolling around in slow circles from the wind. I like pictures where you can see that something recently happened, but you don't quite know what it is. I mean, obviously, a group of people came to the top of this garage to do some drinking, but who? And what did they talk about? That could make an interesting collaborative project actually-combining fiction with photographs. You were an English major, no? What'ya say? Here is the "evidence": https://www.flickr.com/photos/austingranger/sets/72157648955968536/

I've always liked the idea of "implied narrative" in photographs, and your series is a great example of this. Photographs that beg questions are intriguing, I agree, and they almost always involve a human element. I rarely see a photo of a stream flowing past some trees that brings questions to mind. But if there were a pair of shoes on a rock in the foreground, that's a different story. Isn't this why crime dramas are so perennially popular? All you need is one dead body and the questions start crawling out of the woodwork.

And yes, I was an English major, the operative word being "was." I gave up on writing years ago to focus on images. What I would have given to have been able to turn in two photographs in lieu of every 2,000 word essay I had to write in college!

J.

P.S. Chris Van Allsburg's Mysteries of Harris Burdick (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mysteries_of_Harris_Burdick) is a wonderful example of a book of singular images begging for stories to be told about them.
