Ha, that messes with my head Peter. One moment I see concave notches and the next I see convex tabs.
Nice image tuco!
That last one Peter reminds me of rows of violins hanging at the instrument repair shop I used to work at.

Thanks, Guys. It's the pieces under a porch that keep one from seeing under the porch. I"m not sure what they're called. I thought of violins, too.

I hear you on that. I had some some too. And I think I also had every Rollei Retro 80S problem as well. A misallocated hole in the backing paper over a frame, new backing paper text showing up on your image and old fiber backing paper sticking to the film creating "fuzzy patches".
Nice woodland scenes.

Thanks Tuco. I’ve enjoyed your recent contributions to this thread.
I had the same problem with Kodak, so I thought I was safe sticking with Ilford.... At some point I will make an inventory of all the problem rolls and report to Ilford. I do want to shoot medium format, especially for hiking, but this is very discouraging.

Thanks Alan, 6X6TLL, Roger. I do have a few signed copies of the Point Reyes book left if anyone is interested. The images go back to my early days in photography, and are a bit different than what I'm doing now. I suspect some people prefer them, ha. Also, fair warning, the book contains quite a lot of writing. I'll never quiz you about it or anything, but I just want to let you know what you're in for. :-)
Regarding problems with Ilford film, I'm a little relieved to hear it wasn't just me. It was driving me crazy! Mostly FP4, lots of weird spots, very frustrating. Hopefully, if enough people bring it to their attention, they'll sort it out if they haven't already.

Is there a deeper thought behind the "PANIC" button on the car key, in this context?
I dunno. Maybe a quote from a movie might sum up my poor attempt, "...I think I was trying to suggest something about the duality of man, sir." But otherwise it was made for a online person to show how tight a head shot you'd get from a lens + extension tube combo.

I agree. Tuco, have you thought about staging a model to personify your meaning? In this context almost any human in the foreground would add dramatic impact. Your kids, any bystander would do. You're definitely on the right track, I'm just wondering how to make it a more emphatic statement. Looking forward to more.

Now, I just need to argue with this :)
Any human in the frame would not necessary make a better, more dramatic, or mor empathic statement. It might or it might not, but it would certainly make it into another picture, with a whole different angle and story told.
Any human (or humans) in a frame almost automatically becomes the subject. The subject that we as viewers relate to and try to explain, build a story around.
That's what we do as humans, interpreting other humans.
But if you want to make the actual street, building or landscape the subject, making it the thing that owns the story that is being told in picture, leaving out humans makes it so much easier.
For examples, compositions balancing geometrical patterns or areas of shadows and highlight, especially bordering on abstraction, usually don't benefit from from the inclusion of humans.
I have no idea of tuco's intent.
But I personally thought a bit about it, always being reluctant to put people in my own landscape pictures.
Not saying it's better, or easier. But it's different. And putting a human in the frame is not always the best way to reach your goal.
It depends on what you're trying to achieve.

Lasse: We agree that adding a person to a landscape image rarely works. However, Tuco's subject (post #5589) is not a landscape and could have social-political interpretations. A human form under the surveillance camera might be interesting. Of course, it would require different composition and a pose that made the human rather anonymous.

Yes, it could defiantly make it more interesting, even make make it better, but it would also make it very different.
You could say that, as the image stands, the surveillance camera could be seen as the subject, with its eye watching us that are looking at the image. We and the camera are in a sense antagonists. The threat is more directed towards us as in, "If I would be standing there I would be watched".
Put a person in the image and then he or she becomes the subject with the surveillance camera watching at her or him. The person in the image and the surveillance camera are then antagonists. And we have more become onlookers as in "Look, somebody is watching him or her".
Personally I'm more drawn to the first, which I think has the best potentional for emotional impact if well executed. But I'm likewise sure the compelling arguments can easily be made for the opposite view.

Here's the other one too. Just upstream from the Entiat Falls the North Fork of the Entiat comes roaring out of a steep canyon. Scrambling up the canyon would have gotten to some really exciting stuff, but this view was easily available. Again, 80 mm lens and Rollei i.r. film, but with more dappled sunlight I tried for an N-1 development.

Yes, it is.
The park is a primeval forest, untouched by human forestry since the last ice age. Lots of dead trees in different stages of decay.
Quite lovely place, if you like forests. Or dead trees ;)

John, the stream with dappled sunlight is unusual and refreshing.
Lassethomas, the trees remind one of a Grimm Bros. fairy tale. Remarkable. You split toning in the first is effective.

Yes, there's a rustic camp just 200 yards up the road on FR 5606. It's marked Snowshoe Springs on forest maps. There are benches and a firepit, but no latrine. A little further up the river road (FR 5100) and next to the river there's a 2-space fishing camp. Same accommodations. Free camping! The area suffered from a big forest fire some time ago, but both of the camp areas were spared somehow.

Thanks John, the only challenge was my 90 mm cant be fired from the lens and mamiya camera shake, the electronic meter being 2 stops out and over exposing and the Rollie film being less wide than normal and falling out of the Jobo reel and having to scratch around in the dark trying to find my Patterson, and.....ha nothing out of the usual for me, but the picture was easy, just the way I envisaged, although the printer mucked up the colours.

Don't you love it when something new for you works so brilliantly right away?
Thank you John. It's great to find out that a tool works for you. These days buying an old used camera is definitely like rolling the dice. The Plaubel is an odd one for sure. The handling and balance is much nicer on the Mamiya 6, but i do appreciate the 42 sq cm of negative, & the lens is very nice. Above all though, I like to travel light, and the 'skinny' Plaubel is a huge step forward over the Fuji GW680 I took to Italy the last time. It's definitely a winner.

Thanks. Yeah, it does look miniature. The living tree is really short now. I'd say the visible section of its trunk is less than 4-feet/1.2-meter in length to get an idea of scale.

Thanks. I have a CF 50mm FLE but still use this CB 60mm a lot. Back when I purchased mine, it was going for half the price as a CFi lens and mine looked in new condition. This CB has a CFi housing (but missing a housing feature to cripple it as a 'budget lens') plus the same optics as a CFi (unlike the other budget lenses) from what I hear.
Sweet Austin.

Bryan, Pretty impressive darkroom. I just noticed something I have a question about. Fluorescent lamps. My "green" light bulbs continue to glow awhile after turning off. Only some do, the fluorescent type and maybe some LED type. Should darkrooms users be concerned about this?
Two of my fluorescent "shop" lights have a slight glow when turned off using the pull string. Another one (behind my camera, at a little standing workbench I built in the corner) doesn't do this, despite being identical. I have read some reports about residual current - this may be happening as the two that glow slightly are plugged into new outlets I had a contractor put in. Maybe he wired them strangely, compared to the 3rd which I just plugged into an existing outlet.
Anyway, the one in the photo is over my film loading area. You can't see it, but I have a little darkroom timer connected on it so I can manually cut power to it using a switch on the timer that solves that issue. Not particularly elegant, but I didn't feel like trying to figure out what was going on in the outlet. However, I've forgotten to use that a few times with no ill effects - the glow is very, very slight and only noticeable once my eyes adjust to the dark.
Many fluorescent and LED lights glow softly for a second or two after turning off, gradually ramping down. This doesn't matter unless you are ripping open your film box in under a second I don't think!

A handheld multiple-exposure experiment from about seven years ago that I finally scanned and finished recently. This shot is of a statue in Chicago, and was done with a Mamiya 645 Pro, Pentax 105/2.4 lens, and Fujifilm ACROS. The total number of exposures was about 20. I set the camera to multi and let the winder keep re-cockiing the shutter.

Austin - those pilings were one of the earliest 4x5 shots I ever took. My father had been a shipbuilding inspector at Portland in WWII, and was appreciative of the print. But I loaded my filmholders in a furnace closet back then, and the neg required a miserable amount of spotting. I always enjoy your shots.

The El: Brings back memories. In 1962, I used to take it from The Bronx where I grew up to Wall Street where I had my first full time job. It use to be freezing in the train when the heat wasn't working but it was so crowded, people gave off enough heat. But the windows would be frozen on the outside and ice cold to the feel as you peered out of it at the snow on the tracks and tops of buildings.

That's beautiful Austin. So inviting!
Nice photo
What camera did you use for this shot?
I have never taken any film camera to the regatta and like to try so.

Austin, beyond your typically excellent technical presentation, this photo is a statement on this moment in US history. It generates a strong emotional response in the viewer, very strong in my case.
Bravo
Well expressed! +1 to Jerry's appreciation.
