There is nothing straight or square about this building or street!

Located in Apalachicola's Historic Bowry District in the Florida Panhandle. It was, in recent times, a 21-and-up live music bar but did not survive the pandemic. The bar's name pays tribute to the historic Apalachicola Ice Company, founded in 1885, which was the first manufacturing plant in Apalachicola to use the principles discovered by the inventor of the ice machine, the local Dr. John Gorrie (1803-1855). The John Gorrie Museum in Apalachicola is part of the Florida State Park System. "Dr. Gorrie was an early pioneer in the invention of the artificial manufacture of ice, refrigeration, and air conditioning. He was granted the first U.S. Patent for mechanical refrigeration on May 6, 1851."

Thanks for asking: f16.5, 1/30, 500c/m Hasselblad on a Velbon hiking tripod. I developed the film 9 min in HC110 "B" but would use less development time in the future. The Ilford time seems to be too contrasty for the highlights, requiring too much Photoshop fixing.

Thank you both.

Both images were taken with my Hasselblad, first one with 80mm second with 40mm, and both with an R25 filter on Delta 100. I didn't meter the shot - I used Sunny 16, and added about 3 stops for the filter. f/8 and 1/60 was the result. Shooting straight into the sun I figured it'd be fine to not give any extra exposure, and I knew the highlights would be okay as I used Pyrocat 1:1:100, 11 minutes at 75F, my standard recipe.

Interesting how the white lettering seems to jump out of the dark tones of the rest of the scene. Is that a straight scan? Looks like, except the white letters, the rest was placed on a long toe. Film and processing details would be of interest.

Bernard, Iga,
Thanks for your interest. I used a Fuji GF670 and Tri-X, rated normally. Developing was also "normal," in D-76. The bar was painted black, which, combined with the name, drew me to it. I purposefully underexposed the negative by one stop to try and retain the darkness, without completely losing detail. I scanned the negative in using my Epson 4990 flatbed. I generally scan really flat and then build up the contrast, but overall this one was fairly straightforward. What's not straight is that roofline, which I think is partly because I was at a slight angle to the building, but more because the negative holder in my scanner is glassless, so if the negative is curved or bowed at all, it distorts the image. It bothered me a little here, but not too much; I think of it as contributing to a woozy, drunken feeling, fitting for the subject matter. :-)

Thanks for looking at it. It's also in his "Sense of Place" book, page 97. As for the foreground, I burned it in more than Plowden did in his original, but yes, it tends to dominate. The importance of foreground is a continuing theme throughout the "Sense of Place" collection. His go-to lens was a 60mm Distagon, so that's what I used, a lot of foreground then being a natural result. More coming out of the scanner today, I hope.

Thank you. Yes the film behaves well when developed in Dokuspeed SL-N and exposed at EI 25 (I haven't tried other regimes). Having said that, even with this special developer you need to keep an eye on the scene contrast as the highlights can start to block up pretty quickly. It almost needs to be treated like a slide film for best results I find.

Thanks John. Mostly due to the compensation from pyro semi-stand I think. More generally too I find the FP4+ and pyrocat combo to be a marriage made in heaven. The orange filter will have only had a subtle affect as the scene was relatively monochromatic green.

Here's a 1927 Brough Superior SS100 Pendine at the National Motorcycle Museum. As you know, every SS100 was factory tested to 100 mph; with the Pendine's higher compression engine they guaranteed 110mph. Just perfect for narrow English lanes. 500c/m 80mm TriX small flashes

Tin Can: There's no gasoline smell so I think the tanks are empty, however there are lots of oil drippings. As for the UK museum, it's reopened and said it would be fine to visit with my cameras and lights. Just haven't done it, as recently I've had luck getting into American collections.

To all: This is my 1000th posting on the Forum and I want to thank everybody here for being such a generous support group for other photographers. I'm not in galleries anymore so this is an important outlet, as well as a frequent source of inspiration.

John, I pushed the wireless trigger that was mounted on my handlebar.
Thanks austin.

It's not fancy, off the shelf parts and the wooden framework is made for each camera type. Here are the basic parts I used to make it. John this solenoid is not strong enough to trigger my 500C/M. That camera takes a lot of force. I'm thinking I could make the solenoid push a cable release attached to the 500C/M that had some mechanical advantage applied and maybe get a stronger solenoid if needed. There is not much space between the shutter button and camera lens for the solenoid anyway on a 500C/M.

The solenoid could only trigger the Pentax when I reduced the area of contact to increase the force by installing a thumb screw insert shown here from a cable release I had.

Very clever and nicely executed. Maybe for the 500C/M a larger solenoid could push through a cable release, not directly on the camera's shutter release.

Thanks, Tuco, that's smart. I have one of those old wind-up mechanical releases, but it's super fiddly, imprecise, and fails to trip the shutter about the half the time. I don't understand why self-timers are so rare on even relatively modern medium format cameras.

Sure. I'd note the solenoid in the picture had no problems with the M9 without any help.

I still have one of those windup mechanical shutter timers too. And I agree why wouldn't they just make that built into in the camera.

Is there a list somewhere of cameras that will work with IR film?

I have a Rolleiflex 2.8D as well as a 6008i system, and a 4x5 LF kit with Toyo holders.

Will these work with IT film? Can I develop at home like regular B&W film?

I really like the look it gives to foliage and skies/clouds.

Get a roll of Rollei IR 400 in 120 and try it in either of your MF cameras. You will need a Hoya R72 filter on your lens for the IR effect (~5 stops filter factor). Start with ISO 6 and bracket +\- 2 stops in 1 stop increments\decrements.
Development is the same as for 'regular" BW. Check the data sheet for the Rollei IR 400 , they have some developer and times recommendations. I do it in HC-110 with the same time and concentration as for any B&W film.

I agree with Sergey's advice; however, I've been using a Cokin P007 filter for same effect. The advantage is that I can use the same filter on various size lenses with an adapter ring, saving money.

Ahh, I am not familiar with posting images from flickr, thought there is link in the picture....Anyway.
Location: Few steps above Buchsteinhaus, Near Gstaterboden, Naturpark Gesause, Austria.
Camera: Mamiya C330F, Sekor 80/2.8, orange filter; Ilford FP4+@100, Barry Thornton 2 bath dev.(homemade) 4+4 min 22°C
The little specs are unknown issue for me yet. They occur on all last 3 films(FP4+). Could it be undissolved sulfite int the first bath. But sheet films developed in the same batch were OK.

It looks like reticulation to me. I experienced a less severe case with a batch of FP4+ about 4 years ago. And I'm most certain it wasn't from a significant processing temperature difference too.

Reticulation usually occurs with temperature differences during processing, but is pretty rare with modern emulsions. The posted image looks very much like a mottling problem that Ilford has had with some of their medium-format film, I think it might be related to the backing paper. If you send a note to Ilford describing the issue, they will send you a couple of rolls of film. I have had this happen with HP5+ and I believe it has shown up in a number of other emulsions.

Thank you for your input. I too am more and more convinced it is not a processing issue. I always try to avoid temperature differences during all baths (and washing) and to stay in 1°C interval max. The films are from an older batch but still within the expiration date I believe. I will send the batch numbers to Ilford and see what happens.

I agree it looks like mottling from interactions with the backing paper and humidity. It also explains why you didn't see it with sheet films. Did you take a long time (i.e. weeks/months) after exposing the rolls before developing them? This can exacerbate the problem, and when I have seen it with Ilford films in the past it was always due to this scenario.

It can also be caused by issues during manufacturing or transport/storage. I've had similar problems with Kodak (on batches with the older backing paper) and Rollei films too.
