You never can tell what types of objects and scenes I think would make for an interesting composition. Not exactly the stuff of Ansel Adams or Arizona Highways. I can’t really say what I was thinking when I tripped the shutter, but at the time it seemed like something I should do?
Just some of Rockland's working waterfront, done in an abstract Aaron Siskind style and subject materials.

Have the gram weenies claimed another convert? I was hoping you'd hold out long enough to bring back some ULF work from some of the gnarlier drainages in this part of the world.
Seriously, though--nice work and of course, a question: how much do you find yourself missing movements on the rear standard in this kind of environment? (I have rear movements on my Horseman, but they're kludgey enough not to remind one of a monorail.)
Thanks chassis.
Don't worry CB, I'm not selling my 8x10 or 8x20 ;). In fact, next week I will be in a different state for a little while, and I am bringing my 8x20, 4x5, and maybe a little 6x9 setup. I want to shoot at least 4-5 8x20 negatives in a magical area I have photographed before, and will have more time to do it...so stay tuned. But, I have some aspirations on hiking that I need to be realistic with. 4x5 is not going to work in some situations, like very long / arduous, multi-day (week?) hikes.
Edit: Oh, rear movements. You know, I don't hardly ever use them, on any camera. Just not really my thing.

Thank you. We arrived just as the sun was setting and I only managed to take a few photos. This one was the technically the worst, but still my favorite. Looks good Pali. I like using the 58mm SAXL. Agree with the comments to “get closer”.
Thank you Bryan, Chassis and Peter. Peter, that is excellent tip to get closer and I'll keep it in mind the next time I take this lens out.
I am very happy with how well it covers the format and even though their is definitely some vignetting, it is very much usable without the center filter.

I need your advice for this picture of a fisherman shot in India.
It was shot with a Rolleiflex 3.5E with a portra film.
The obvious thing would be to keep it in colour which seems not bad to me, but i like also the black & white cause i feel like it seems to be more sensitive, more straight...
What do you think ?

Wonderful JP. I've been there when the fog horn went off. What did you say:)
Thanks guys.
I've been there too when the foghorns are on. I've even set off the foghorn at another lighthouse on a sunny day by accidentally standing in front of the optical rangefinder it used as a sensor.
Now the foghorns are activated by VHF radio by mariners in need. The optical sensors were past their useful life and getting unreliable. They did not go off when I was there thankfully.

So I'm standing, getting ready to take this photo. The place where Janice and Lauren are sitting is fairly high up. Janice helps Lauren get there but has some trouble pulling herself up. A young German tourist helpfully puts both of her hands on Janice's bottom and gives a good shove. That would've been the photo of the trip, but I was standing there doing my best impression of a slack-jawed yokel.

I tend to prefer B&W, the face comes forward a bit more and the overall sense of space is increased. This may be because the blue, while more attention grabbing in the chair and sandal, tend to draw us also toward the blue in the background.

Very nice well-balance and interest composition, Austin. I think that's the best image of Easter Island statues I've seen.
Side note: I wonder if anyone has investigated what might be buried underneath those stone heads.

Yes. .. stone bodies.
The statues are actually full-figure, down to the hips/thighs.

Thanks chassis. Steve, I'd love to see your pinhole images! Did they let you use a tripod in the Marriott? I hear they are strict about that. It's pretty dark in there compared to some of the other hotels. I haven't got to that film yet but I shot some images there. I was thinking about trying to use my tripod but there was a conference going on (my wife was attending, hence the trip) and so too many people to try that.
Also, user Kerosene Hat made a wonderful image in the Marriott way back a few thousand posts in this thread HERE (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?109274-MF-(6x4-5-6x6-6x7-6x9-6x12)-B-amp-W-film-images-sharing&p=1363889&viewfull=1#post1363889).
Bryan, thanks for the very kind link. I dig your wide format shot of the Marriott Marquis very much. It's a cool atrium hotel (the first, which is notable), and not too difficult to squeeze off a couple frames (permission is always good, but tipping the, hotel bartender well also doesn't he rot :) ). Great stuff, B.

The Hidden Castle of Georgia
Built in 1898 and featuring the distinctive crenellations of a medieval castle, this structure was the powder magazine for Savannah, GA - a place to store gunpowder and other explosives. It sits rather haphazardly in a forested area adjacent to a strip mall, with no historical marker or other indication of its presence. While there a storm passed through, and so I took shelter inside and tried to find a dry spot - the roof leaks, naturally. You can see the water pooling inside the doorway. A fascinating bit of history.

Thanks John. I'll have to go back next time I am in the Savannah area, hopefully when the area is not so overgrown (winter, perhaps). Yesterday I drove up into the mountains on a whim and went to a small state park (Vogel) and hiked around Lake Trahlyta. On the north end of it there is a water treatment plant, and they apparently dump treated water back into Wolf Creek. The path this water takes has cut an unnatural ravine into the ground below the hiking trail which I thought was interesting, and the light was very nice:

That gravestone, especially with the short DOF, has a real window-like quality. Strange, and almost a little creepy in its own way. What's next, a video screen and home movies?
It's common in many cultures to place images on gravestones and the like, from when the Romans used to do it to the modern day. It's a way for the loved ones to remember the deceased and to put a face to a grave. Not strange or creepy at all.

I'm liking the first one, especially.:) If I could get you to entertain a newbie question, though: what movements (if any) did you use? I could see trying to use swing on the far face of the gully and downed tree, but would worry that the upright trunk of the tree in the foreground wouldn't be sharp toward the top of the frame.
Thanks chassis.
duff, some kind of representation is one thing, but an actual photograph is a bit different, and a little strange to see, in my eyes.
CB - no movements on that image. It was stopped down to f/16 and a half or so. I was pleasantly surprised the bottom left was in sharp focus too, so there's a small chance the lens was very slightly tilted forward - the Century Graphic tilt lock doesn't tighten down all that well. I modified my 2x3 Centuries to have front tilt instead of rear tilt as they are designed to do (to correct for the drop bed angle) as I never use the drop bed - it's only needed for wides but I use my 38mm XL on a dedicated camera. Of course carry two Century Graphics is still lighter than carrying one Pentax 67 ;). And the Pentax can't shoot at 38mm or 6x9...
And since I'm here, here's an image I shot last weekend that I really like and might print. An image in the salt marshes at the Wormsloe Historic Site near Savannah, taken with that Century and 38mm camera:

Thanks! I was eyeing the lower left corner myself and wondering if you were mostly relying on DOF.
At any rate, a nice composition from Wormsloe--you manage to get great "depth" in the frame, while my efforts to date tend toward the planar...tougher than it looks in these untidy surroundings, "movements" or no!

Three more MF images from our Rhode Island vacation. Two are structures from the Wilbor History Museum, simple architecture but I enjoy the geometries. The third is a doorway at the Blitheswold Estate, Bristol's answer to Newport's mansions. In all cases I would have preferred to use my 4x5, but the real feel temps were around 101F, so (with some "encouragement" from my wife) the quicker Rollei 6006 was called for.

Processed in LPD 1:3 and selenium toned. I also use Ansco 130. I haven't found the paper to be cold tone. Here is the manufacturer's description: "The paper is manufactured using silver chlorobromide emulsion that gives neutral-to-medium warm tone to the silver image."

This is an arresting image. The composition is above and beyond even your normal excellence, IMO. The sense of depth between the trees in this configuration really works. I have tried, and mostly failed, to compose or arrange trees in a staggered way similarly. The perfectly composed and complete fern there in the lower left completes the image.

:) Thank you Steve! The lens is extremely wide for my normal shooting so it is taking me some time to adjust to it. Peter had recommended that I get closer to the subjects with this lens and it sure is helping.

What is curtain crinkle, precious?
The Pentacons had such a HUGE shutter cloth curtain that sometimes it get's stuck in a way that when you look at it, it literally looks like a window curtain that is all crinkled up.
And another one...

Austin, what film and developer did you use? Significant post processing after the scan?
This was made with a Fuji GF670. The film was Tri-X. I've been having a local lab develop my film, but it's just normal processing, I'm sure in either D-76 or HC-110. As for post processing, It's not tweaked too much. My usual method is to make a fairly flat scan (I have an Epson 4990 flatbed) and then build up the contrast from there. In this case, the darker areas of the rock are higher contrast than than the high lit snow and the sky. Other than that, it was pretty straightforward, just a little edge burning and spotting. Oh, I think I used a light yellow filter for the initial shot, but I can't remember for sure; I was so tired!

Part of the benefit of only having one lens option with the Rolleiflex is you eventually learn how things render at each F/stop if you keep shooting the same subject. I knew how the depth of field would work at the chosen aperture so I was not surprised by the mix of crisp lines and smooth background here.

This is a little more experimental, playing with different brightnesses of lines and shape rather than repetition. But I still had a good feeling for the layering.

Shooting into the sun is one of those rules that are good to break. The coated tessar makes it easy with it's small number of elements. The older lenses have nice round apertures for this sort of thing too. Coated + Round aperture means late 40's and into the 1950's for a nice era of lenses.

Jason, lovely tonality. And I love the furry rock creature at left near the horizon.
Last year I made this image of a rock on a sand dune in Glamis, CA. I made one print but I've been meaning to come back to it. I also had an idea I wanted to try.
This is my test print, cleaned up a little in PS. I need to make a few prints and better refine my technique. This is an image on Acros 100, selectively toned with thiourea. I used rubber cement to mask off the rock and shadow. The only issue I had was ragged edges on the masking - I need to get a fine brush and do it really carefully and slowly. I am kinda thinking about trying out a two-step toning process, where I mask off just the stone, tone it a little, and then mask off the shadow as well, and then fully tone it, to get a different look in the shadow. Not sure if that'll work.
Here's the resultant scan of the 11.5 x 13.5 inch print:
http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/toning-1315ss.jpg
Basically I wanted to get the sand to a tone that looked more or less like, well, sand. I thought it would be an interesting effect for this image in particular, though I am also now thinking about other uses.

Tuco, an exceptionally fine photograph, beautifully handled. Such a lyrical image! The subtle composition balance of light on the near grave stone is just right. Beautiful sky rendering.
Thanks you guys.

Kudos on your handhold work with that 6x15. That camera needs a logo!

+1, very nice Peter! I like the wind chimes blurred by wind.

Yesterday I experimented with using an old Canon G9 in manual mode as a light meter - the LCD shows the exposure changes as you adjust shutter and aperture, and it makes a nearly idiot-proof way of ensuring there's no clipping. But it does feel like cheating, so it's back to the Sekonic today. 500c, 150/4 plus ext. tube, XP2, HC-110, X1 scan:

Peter, looks like an interesting location.
I'm teaching a class on a new campus this semester, and so I have a bit of a drive through the Wisconsin country side. Just outside of Forrest Junction, there's Camp Forrest. Originally, it was a religious summer camp, but now it's mainly used for weddings. http://www.whiteoakchapel.com/
There are a whole bunch of wooden buildings, some obviously cabins. It's a mix of well-kept, and not so much, including big shutters slamming open and shut in the breeze. I'm sure the Chapel is nice when it's open, but the rest of the grounds feel like it should be in a Stephen King novel.
I'm having a bit of a problem with my Gaoersi finder, as I expected quite a bit more on the left side of the picture. Knowing what framing I'll get is my biggest challenge with using the pano camera.
the rest of the grounds feel like it should be in a Stephen King novel.
That sounds awesome! Strange, about the finder. It's definitely a challenge to get accurate composition with the camera.
Yeah it looks like an interesting place to get that pano camera tuned up, Peter.

Hmm. This is the kind of scene I walk past on the way to somewhere "better." It quietly reminds me to look at everything more thoughtfully. Nice image.
Excellent jp! The tree really blossoms from the frame. Square works perfectly here, and sharp rather than soft focus.

I see it's time for some new fixer - those stripes are a peculiarity of underfixing XP2 after HC-110 development. They happen if you use standard dilution fixer, so I make mine a bit more concentrated. 5 minutes for the first 20 films and 10 minutes for the final ten films. This was film #26 and had ten minutes but I guess I can refix it if I want. Oh, they are arranged vertically as this was done in a motorised Rondinax 60.

At a recent gallery opening, I met local pinhole camera builder Kurt Mottweiler, and he kindly lent me one of his "Woodbläks" to see what I could come up with. It's been fun to shake things up a little and get out of my usual groove. Here's a link to Kurt's website for those interested. He really makes some ingenious and beautiful cameras: http://mottweilerstudio.com

Thanks Peter. It's very well made and well thought out. For me, the difficulty with pinhole cameras is the extreme wide angle view. You really have to get right up close to your subject, and even then, it's still a little hard to predict how things will turn out. As an example, that sea stack in life is enormous, probably 30 feet tall, and yet, from the resulting photo, there is very little sense of scale. That's part of the fun of it for me though, the looking at a roll of film and being surprised at what you find.
