Now that was carefully composed. One of those pictures where the meaning depends so much on what you bring to it.
I have been experimenting with Portra and wanted to compare it with Acros on the same subject. Not sure if I like one over the other, but here is the Acros image. The Portra version can be found here - http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?117888-MF-(6x4-5-to-6x12)-COLOR-image-sharing&p=1360319&viewfull=1#post1360319

Salmo, I saw the Portra version & it looked excellent. The Acros version is even better - just superb. Supposedly that 100mm is the sharpest of the 'blad offerings. Looking at this - I'd believe it.

This morning I got out to Lake Lanier, the largest man-made lake in GA, right at dawn. It's a great time to explore as the lake is almost 10 feet low due to drought. There's a bunch of small boat launch areas around the lake near posh residential areas which are generally boring but I found one with some land bridges to small islands out in the lake. Some of the rocks and trees remind me of images from Maine like jp posts here.

THanks... I see some of the similarities here. Layers and tones made with coastline. Simple shapes and lines made with tones made from shorelines and trees. Tree stump in the water instead of a rock, but the same thing in a composition. You may be reminded of my area because our water recedes 9-14 feet every day with the tides.

I'd be happy photographing in a place like this... Not sure about plus-x (it's been a while since I used it), but I normally don't filter and I get smoother more predictable tones. I've tried filters and just can't predict what I'll get for tones, so I mostly don't use them unless the sky needs it. Just like human skin looks much different filtered, the natural world looks different too.
Lots of good subject matter in the scene, and I personally try to emphasize one item or create depth by narrower depth of field, careful background selection, tone or tone+texture differences between foreground items and background, etc...
Yeah, this Plus-X is getting a bit foggy, and the uncoated lens makes things a bit flat too. Of course Plus-X has been out of production for a while but I bought a few bricks (already expired) inexpensively when I needed some film and didn't have much cash. I actually have just one or two more rolls and I'm done with it, so I'm just using it up. I need to go back and shoot a bit more with some Acros I just bought, or a larger format.
I didn't know your tides were that drastic!

Thanks, John. It was a busy Saturday evening and I was there with a small group who had permission to shoot. F 16 and a 3 minute exposure took care of any onlookers. If you're interested, I recommend looking up Dean Stevenson's Atlanta Photo Workshops on Meetup; he takes care of tripod permissions and the logistics for a very reasonable fee. There is one more Marriott workshop in the hopper and one more shoot at the Fox; both of these locations will soon be off limits to groups soon...

The Garradunga Hotel is an isolated building surrounded by thousands of hectares of sugar cane fields in the hot tropics of Far North Queensland, Australia. In more than a hundred years it has slaked the thirst of bands of cane cutters blackened by the harvest of burnt cane. It has been a haven for railway passengers stranded for days or weeks by wet season flood waters over the tracks. The Kanakas, indentured labourers from the pacific islands, virtual slaves, have come and gone at Garradunga.
The old pub is under new management, the steak sandwiches are filling, the beer is cold. And yes, atop the cold drinks cabinet at the right is a preserved crocodile head.

Austin, you manage to get so much more into your pics than just visual elements. Without exception, I find that they all ooze with some abstract form of sentiment or emotion from deep within. Always a pleasure to view your art.

Thanks - I got lucky as it was mostly a white-out. I stayed around for about an hour in the cold and rain until the fog lifted partly for just a few minutes.

I prefer the warm toned images.
If the Right image had higher whites you could maybe tone it warm again with a little sepia... maybe even just a short bleach would nock down the highlights...
Left feels more intimate, Right feels more historical/nostalgic.

I forgot to mention that I also really enjoyed the squirrel/cemetery pairing from Austin. Austin, you really have an eye for diptychs - both compositionally and tonally, as well as of course subject matter.

Thanks DG, tuco! Edit: also thanks Austin!
Here in north GA there's still snow on the ground but it's mostly gone. We got over 3 inches, which for this part of the country means a state of emergency :).
Went hiking at my favorite spot close by and took this image of icicles. Pentax 67ii, 90-180mm f/5.6, Acros, Rodinal
http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/snow-5704ss.jpg
Side-note: This was the first time using the 90-180mm zoom. I've had it for awhile but just never used it when I had brought it along. This lens is crazy sharp and has a very nice zoom range for details, and focuses close to boot. Pentax really knows how to make a nice zoom - the 55-100mm is also fantastic.

Truly the magic was in the long exposure. Have been really studying and thinking about Michael Kenna lately, as well as Austin's fine work at the sea. I'm also trying to push things a bit in my negatives past where I would normally - for example, I pushed down the darker areas in the sky more than normal, which I usually don't do as it starts to get really grainy, but it works. But I don't want to go too far.

Hello all,
I've been enjoying the images on this site for a few years now, and have also learned a tremendous amount from the collective knowledge on this forum so it's about time to contribute something. I'm currently only using MF, but those large negatives do seem attractive... Anyway, constructive criticism is always appreciated!

Tuco, that sand texture is amazing. Love it with the foot prints and crisp focus int he first one, leading up to that sweep above.
Love that first photo tuco. Nice mix of lines and textures and tones.
I've been shooting winter here... Not as much snow as years past, but I managed to find myself at a skating pond with my family just as it started to snow and the mix of snow crystal texture, blade marks making energetic abstract shapes, and frozen natural items made a crazy mix I spent a long time photographing. Some with my dslr, some with my rolleiflex shown here.

Thanks jaymus. That's kind of you to say. I can't claim to have anything down to a science though. To be honest, out of a roll of 12 exposures, it's almost always the case that only 2-3 are keepers. So I'd say that more than anything, I'm just stubborn.

From my trip to the Alvord Dessert in Oregon last summer. It was pretty hot at 100F degrees. I had a nagging, hurry up and take the picture, person with me. A real mojo killer. I feel if I was by myself I could have found more pictures to take. For some reason this roll had a lot of uneven development. So I wasn't too happy about this picture. But I've gotten over it to appreciate it better.
How much heat can film take? I left the camera exposed to the Sun in the back of my Jeep with the tail gate open for a while. When I picked it up it was really hot. The film had to be baking in there.

I like how the shape of the shrub and the clouds echo each other. Alvord is one of my favorite places in Oregon. I'm sorry about the hurry-up-and-take-the-picture person. That's the real power of that place, it's ability to slow time and make one focus on the present moment, on just... existing. It drives impatient people crazy though, ha.

Thanks Koraks!
Just as a side note: the first one was 3S at f45 - as the Wray London is a barrel lens, I've made an exposure that I could control with the "T" focal plane shutter set. Dev time was 8 1/2mn at 20°C with X-Tol 1:1 (6 months old stock diluted).
The 2nd shot was 5 or 6 seconds at f45 too, but this time 10mn with the same developer and dilution. So, more exposure and 25% more development. My reading left me expose the cream tissue to zone VI in the first, and Zone VII in the second one. I wanted some expansion in the second shot, intended it because the texture both of the tissue and the shells. Light was natural and a pair of cardboards to work with as "fill light" - sort of...
I'll develop 2 more negatives this evening with nearby the same scene, but another lens - Heliar 4.5/150mm, will se how it comes,
Cheers,
Renato

Yes, definitely a 'road less traveled'!
Very nice sheel, the first image in particular is striking.
Thanks Chassis!!
Thank you Halford, Les, sheel. Sheel, I see you've been trudging around in the snow as well. I particularly like that last one with the poor shrub. Or is that a tree top? The snow looks very deep. :-)
Austin, right on ;) the snowfall this year has been absolutely incredible, not just for skiing/snowboarding but for photography opportunities!! And yes, you're right, this field/lake was blanketed in very deep snow. In fact, I took one step too far and I basically fell in upto my hip/groin! I suspect that "shrub" is probably about 4ft tall

Really nice!
Dave,
Terrific, I would choose another film, but that's OK, can live with that. :)
BTW I also was there anywhere in the past, maybe in the end of the 70'. More often to Ceará/Fortaleza, not too far from there,
Cheers,

Thanks, chassis & Renato. I completely agree on the film, although I think part of the graininess is because I'm not used to scanning MF film. It's a good reason to return, however, to this amazing place, probably with the 4x5 & Delta 100. Here's one more from yesterday's scanning session;

Dave,
Amazing, too.
You'll probably have to go easy with the sharpening step, always at 100% or more of magnification, check the level intended and go back a bit before proceeding - less is more. This will avoid halo and some jpeg artifacts, lessing - but not eliminating - grain sharpness and its visibility.
And yes, that's a place to revisit, for sure,
HTH,
Renato

Gelatin-silver photograph on Agfa Classic MCC 111 VC FB photographic paper, image size 19.3cm X 24.3cm, from a Tmax 400 negative exposed in a Seagull 4A-103A twin lens reflex rollfilm camera with a 75mm f3.5 haiou lens.
This was a random discovery on a little road trip. Very cool place called Natural Bridge in VA. A small highway still goes right over this.

From a scan of a contact print on some old paper from a while back...or maybe a platinum print
Horsetail Falls ("The Natural Firefall") coming off El Capitan, Yosemite National Park -- many years ago.
Grabbed the 8x10, off to Yosemite and driving up into the foothills when I realized I left my film 400 miles away. A friend lent me his press 120 camera and old film and I had fun. Along the river I saw this and set the camera...and I was all alone...then I was 'surrounded' by photographers. I thought it quite odd. Then I found out about the "natural firefall". So I present this small image as a reminder that the annual migration of photographers is about to happen to Yosemite Valley. The water is there, may the light be!

Nice find! I wonder what bridge inspection criteria the highway department uses for a natural bridge.
And nice series Austin

'Most kind, chassis. Thank You. Compared to Europe - our 'old' churches aren't very old, but often quite beautiful. I'd like to re-shoot First Pres. Portland - w/ 12 or 14 species of carved wood, designed by a ship-builder. This was the first Catholic church I've shot (monastery, actually).

I asked one of the park employees about that - apparently they have metal pins in the rock in some places to assure stability. Don't ask me how they determined where and how! Pretty amazing really. I do believe big heavy trucks are not allowed on that highway.

I don't usually like these higher contrast renditions, but your choice of film/developer for these scenes is perfect! Nice job!!

Thanks Alan,
I'm also not normally into higher contrast, which is why this is the first time I've used a red filter in ages. Honestly, I shot these just to finish up a roll so I could develop it and was very surprised at how many "favorites" they garnered on Flikr, so I decided to post them here as well.
Variety I guess is the spice of life!

Austin, 'Not being Catholic, I had no idea what it would be like, but on phone & in person, people connected w/ the Abbey were wonderful. 'Very natural, relaxed, welcoming. I've no doubt your time there would yield some sweet images. The town of Mt. Angel has a large, beautiful catholic church - St. Mary's on the way, as well as what looks to be an eastern orthodox church also on the way (onion domed spires).
I need to find roads like you travel. 'Love the farms, outbuildings, landscapes.
