I love it
But I want one little teeny thing- the mortar joints to be really horizontal.
the tilt is really cool
But hey, that's just me
Not sure I'd crop the curb, but I might-

Ed
thanks Ed
I fought with this one! My final conclusion is that the wall is wavy. If you look close the majority of the bricks are horizontal..there is a L to R wave and an in to out wave :)

I love this last one! great composition! so graphical...
Maybe I would even tweak the bottom part to have the exact same tonality as the upper part to confuse even more the perspective... but thats just me.

Wow! Laron all 3 are stunning.
How did you get number 1? I love the street and how it looks. There is almost an HDR look to this and i mean that in the best possible way :)
Yes, they are all great but the first one for me is a total stand out.

Laron, where is your subject located? Excellent work by the way.
thanks!
about the first image: it was taken just after sunset so the street had the lights on, this is why it is so bright and still the sky had also a great amount of luminosity so everything got some even lighting, I did not force it in post. otherwise I dont like neither the unnatural forced flat look of usual hdris.
there was also around one stop more exposure and a bit of push developing too to have everything a bit washed out and dreamy. in lightroom I had to desature the yellows/oranges quite a bit because they were way too saturated, the whole street was a yellow flood which I didnt like this time. the reds were quite magenta-ish already but I pushed a bit more, I liked the overall color balance more this way. the film I used has been expired 10 years ago and I didnt kept in fridge neither, but the colors looks still quite ok, even better this time.
Mark, I have geo tagged it on flickr you can check the exact location. But its in Basel too like all others Ive made so far...

johnmsanderson, that's a wonderful effect.
My only niggle is that the repeat is a bit too obvious on the right hand side. For me, the clear spatial doubling detracts from the otherwise excellent feeling of superimposed activity and stroboscopic time. Easily cured by cropping just right of the wooden pole.
Stephane Couturier is a French photographer who has made wonderful multiple exposures in factories (on LF too). There's a fine balance between chaos and gesture that he gets just right.

1-Nov-2011, 19:56
thanks for the info. i didn't consider your niggle but it make sense. i'm going back to this location all the time for photos, i'm definitely going to try it again. It was only 2 exposures.
Couturier is good.

I like the puddles too. I think it was Siskind who said he always liked to include two objects in his abstracts - the viewers mind can't help but anthropomorphise the relationship between them.

A tad better scan here? It comes a little closer to matching the color of the sky in the transparency but still has tha "muddy" apparence IMO. Although it seems straightforward, this is not an easy image to capture. For one thing, I waited a little too long before tripping the shutter on this one as the apen glow is already half-way up the buildings and this may have accounted for the muddy appearance of the sky.
I found this image a few days ago along with about a hundred others in a notebook that I had forgotten about.

I'm not sure. The B&W is fun so I may shoot more of it, but it won't replace my color work.
I do have more from Chicago, mostly in color. I just haven't had time to scan it yet, I've been too busy with other things.

Thanks Jon. :)
Although the blue in the print is a more subtly and darker blue than the bright and splashy Prussian blue that I expected and frankly don't care for, I didn't tone the print. The resulting blue, which the scan doesn't quite capture, may be the result of the length of exposure (30 minutes in the sun) and/or the addition of oxalic acid and potassium dichromate that I added to the sensitizing solution. I'm quite pleased with the result and don't see any reason to tone it.

I don't see any reason to tone it either. I like it just as it is. I'm just used to seeing more 'blue' in a Cyanotype, and had to ask the question.

Thanks Zach! Yeah, I made a picture of this before with my Yashica Mat and liked it enough to return with the big camera. The funny thing was that he whole time I was setting up, the conveyor belt at left was turning, pouring gravel onto the hill. It looked really cool with the dust rising up and everything, and I thought it would really make the picture. But then, only seconds before I tripped the shutter, they stopped the belt! Just my luck. I waited around for awhile, but it seemed like the plan was to move the mound before starting things up again so I made my picture, declared victory, and left. So goes the life of a large format photographer... :)

Austin, can you divulge a bit about the printing? Love the tonality! :)
Richard,
Thank you!
I'm afraid as of now, this picture exists only in the ether of the internet. But I can offer you a little bit of info: it was made on 5x7 Tri-X with a Fujinon W 250. I used a ND 110 filter to bump the exposure time out to 15 minutes (!) or so; I wanted to smooth out some finicky looking clouds and also wanted to give the subject the sort of uncanny quality I felt it deserved. As for the color, it's a fill layer applied in Photoshop Elements. The hex code is EEC900 if that means anything to you. I think of this as my 'sickly gold' tone, as it has a tiny bit of green in it.
Thanks again, Austin
I'm looking forward to seeing what you bring back from the desert. Wish I was going!

Ha! Thanks. The lens is a Fujinon 250. I like it a lot, but I can tell you that it's not flare-proof. As a matter of fact, I just posted a picture in the landscape thread made with the same lens with a big giant flare in it. I think it depends on a lot of factors: atmospheric conditions, time of day, exposure length, aperture, angle to the sun, luck? Here's another into the sun shot (I see cataracts in my future) made with the same lens:

Here's another urban/rail image. A subject I've been working on the past coupla months. I was kind of inspired by Gursky/color field approach. This was with a 58mm lens to capture the horizontal impact of the building. I was wary of using an ultra wide lens because I think some of the impact of the building detail is lost (though I do like how the WA captured the sun's glint waning from right to left), my only other option would be to stitch several images from a longer lens together, which I might end up doing. Also I'm unsure about the cut off text

Agree. I would go back with a slightly longer lens and leave off the text.
It is a really great image.
You might also try different variations in daylight as well as twilight. I don't know if the light ever hits it sideways at sunup or sundown, but that could be cool as well. Kind of a variations on a theme thing.
An iPhone/iPad app called LunaSolCal can tell you about the sun azimuth and altitude for any given day or time, as well as all the sunrise sunset twilight info.

Though I agree I think the text does more harm than good -- the eye is too easily drawn to it, rather than the repetition of the tracks and building...

I agree. The image has quite a tension to it. Its induction into the viewer of alternating high and low fields grounds it in a vocabulary which while not current, is almost magnetic.
Also I'm unsure about the cut off text
I would much prefer to see no text or the entire text, although I don't know how long it is since I haven't seen all of it. :D

I seem to recall, the property is owned by the Moroun's, along with other real-estate around the city. Often wondered how it escaped demo all these years. It would appear a rehab would be financially out of the question.

Info for those who care:
This is the Marathon Oil Refinery on the Mississippi River in St Paul Park, MN. I think Marathon may have sold it last year though. On the left is the Rock Island swing bridge which opened in 1895. It was closed in 1999 and almost completely demolished in 2009. It was bought by Inver Grove Heights and converted into a pier/park.

Could have given it more exposure for sure. I was mainly interested in the 8x10 Velvia I shot. I am sending that out tomorrow, hopefully it turns out. I don't think b&w fit this scene as much as color. With the featureless sky there isn't much going on and obviously the color doesn't come through. I am hoping the Velvia captured some great color as the sun was just coming up behind the right bit of smoke and lighting everything up pretty good.
You're right, it's a little stark in b&w, but I still like it as such...
Personally I would crop it as a panorama. Probably with the horizon centered. Interested to see the color, please post when you can.

You are probably right about the crop. I actually did that pretty much to the bridge/reflection when I first scanned it. For some reason it didn't feel right taking out that much of the photo although it probably would look better if I could detach myself from the current framing. Not sure why I am averse to cropping it like that. I usually like a longer aspect ratio too. I think, at the least, crop the top to the bridge. I'll have to see how the color renders the scene as that is what I was there for. It better turn out...:D

Yes this is edited. I haven't shot much Portra so I am no expert with it. Here is what Epson Scan gave me after some minor color adjustments:
http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/1681/img388.jpg
Depending on the scan settings and whatnot you can vary the color quite a bit. But the scene was way more orange. I don't think that straight scan is representative of what the Portra negative actually holds. I know Portra is not supposed to be saturated but here is a straight unedited raw file from a D300s:
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/9784/068svs.jpg
Under-exposed for the sky which increased the saturation a bit but still way more orange than the straight Portra scan. The sky was incredibly orange that evening which is why I don't think the scan is right.

Rain turned to snow would be great :D . We've got maybe 1" on the ground which is nuts for this time of year. I hadn't heard about the flooding, that's obviously never good. Anyway great shots, the new one too. My brother keeps imploring me to get into the old breweries around here that may soon be demolished.

What an interesting industrial landscape!
This second one really popped. It's an interesting selection from the entirety of the scene. The very neutral grey balance of this particular image (as compared to the other two that have very dark areas) really appeal to my sensibilities as far as monochrome images go -- I enjoy when something is presented in opposite to what it ostensibly conveys. The image breaths. This is one of the reasons I have been working with color as of late, since my subjects are often somber in their own right and oftentimes shown in contrasty light -- I need color to liberate it from its austerity. sorry for digressing... nice work.

I like how there is more color and detail on the bridge, water, and ice for Portra but the Kowa 210mm doesn't handle flare well. Moving down the shore should get rid of the sun from right behind the steam/smoke. I want to try using a 24" lens and get in really tight. I do like how the length of the exposure in the Velvia version made the smoke on the right look a bit like fire.
I really like the Portra one too, but it is a real pity about the flare.

Thanks. It's the second time now it has flared pretty good. I am going to try and avoid direct sunlight like this with the Kowa. Probably common sense but coming from digital the lenses there behave quite well in that regard, generally.
Great color! I like this shot better.
Thanks. I find the colors of the Velvia purer. Both were exposed to pretty much silhouette the refinery and maintain highlights and color saturation so shadow detail in both is limited. If I hadn't moved the position of the camera slightly I would have been able to composite the bridge from Portra into the Velvia photo to gain that extra detail. The Portra was edited to look a bit like the Velvia, but I didn't give it my best effort since I wasn't as fond of the result/flare.

This work is from my ongoing project to document issues related to informal development in the world's major cities. This particular area was created as a place to house families evicted from their squatter homes along railways in Mumbai. The problem is it's far from the city center and therefore people living there are somewhat marginalized. Now squatter are occupying the spaces between the resettlement project buildings, making for something of a nightmare situation. Occasionally, as in this photo, officials demolish swaths of homes. But they're rebuilt almost as fast.
Here are some of the resettlement projects:
http://noahaddis.com/mumbai/photos/03.jpg
And the inside of a home that was rebuilt the day after it was demolished, though obviously it's just temporary until they can rebuild it stronger. This one is home to seven people:
http://noahaddis.com/mumbai/photos/04.jpg
And a closeup of a rebuilt temporary home:

All were MT2000 and Portra 160. Lenses are 135mm Apo-Sironar-S; 90/4.5 Grandagon-N and 115mm Grandagon-N.
Or if you prefer the Gursky-esque version:

I do prefer this one!

Noah,
It's nice to finally see some of your new photos; looks like India was a successful trip.

I was in India a few months ago and was amazed at the living conditions of so many. These shots are certainly revealing.

Noah,
these pictures make me feel sad.

as a bunch of egoists and possibly fail,
or make a radical change into a community of individuals that follow the call of their hearts.

Vinny,
I love the way power lines stretch to the horizon but have never made a satisfactory image of them myself. Very nice, perfect symmetry.

Nice composition Vinny. Beyond the use of graphic lines I like how it seems to be a park that's been completely covered in power lines.

Very nice! So many subtleties that drew me in, like the sun reflections off the power lines, and the plane between the towers. And great control of the extreme highs and lows!

Thanks guys. I've driven by these powerlines so many times, I finally had to stop. Peter, that's a 4 minute exposure at 10pm. Lit by the moon.

Tom,
Thanks! I froze my behind off setting up in the freezing fog, but I got some worthwhile shots and was very pleased. It helps that this scene is only one block from my house. Afterwards I hurried home to the warmth of forced air heat.
This is one of those examples where the film "sees" the scene so much differently than your eyes do. I was shocked by the foreground detail and even the light on the side of the utility pole. None of that registered on the ground glass at the time I was focusing.

Here's one from three years ago when I first got the Aero Ektar and just HAD to mess around with the obligatory "small world" tilt/swing shots. Shot on very expired 4x5 Velvia, hence the uncorrectable (at least by me) color shift.
