My first picture on LFPF:)
A scene from my home town. The site was once a freight yard.

Yes, for me being Swede that is unfortunate, since I enjoy photographing such scenes :) I go to Japan once or twice a year, my chance to do the photography I like the most.

take an EXTRA, typical 8x10 darkslide(just the slide, not the holder, and also:same type as the slides in your film holders). Measure just under 1/2 the width(short dimension) of the slide. Cut length-wise. Here's my procedure in the field for such use:
1. compose picture(I've marked my g/g accordingly to see where the slide will 'cut' the picture.
2. Close/cock lens
3. Take meter reading
4. Transfer meter reading to shutter speed/aperture on lens
5. Insert film holder
6. Remove dark slide
7. Replace darkslide with "1/2"(4x10) slide, in appropriate place for covering the right side of the sheet to be exposed(simply flip the slide to cover other side)
8. Shoot picture
9. Remove 4x10("1/2") slide and replace with full darkslide
10. Remove holder from camera, and x-fer to holder bag. Record exposure/notes,etc...
and go on your merry way :)
looks like a lot, but once done a few times, it goes by all together in about 30-40 seconds, if the light hasn't changed, subject is standing still, etc....

FWIW Many backs have a slot where you can place a piece of black cardboard in front of the ground glass to accomplish the same result as cutting a slide in half. My Deardorff has them going both ways, so with a couple of pieces of cardboard, i have a 4x10 & 5x8 capability.

Are you familiar with Edward Burtynsky's work? He did a whole series on mines/quarries, in color. He calls them "Manufactured Landscapes" and there was a documentary about his work of the same name. I recommend it.
I think his approach is/was to use longish lenses and include very little foreground in the composition, so the landscape appears without depth. He would also seek high vantage points.
I like the detail on the horizon in the second picture. I find the inclusion of grass on the left distracting and I don't feel it adds much. The first one feels more balanced in that respect..

John,
thanks for your comment.
Yes I also think that the first one has better tones, contrast and lines.
I shared the second one because it's from the same point and I thought that
the two photos belong together.
The second one is a little bit boring even there was no grass and I agree that
the most interresting part is the background with the power plants.
Maybe better to make it with a 450mm ?
I think my learning curve is just at the beginning;)
Saw some photos from "Manufactured Landscapes" and was very impressed.
I just googled and saw that there is also a movie (from Jennifer Baichwal).
BTW I really enjoy watching movies and record them from TV or buy DVD's.

This photo is not so good somehow.
I like the second one a lot. I think it would be worth some experimentation to get the tonality worked up. I'd try to make it more contrasty, specifically to darken the cloud shadow in the foreground much stronger and make the cloud highlights lighter. An overall stronger contrast so to speak. Likely to be done with burning/dodging in a real darkroom or "curves adjustment layers" with masks in photoshop.
(BTW, I think both pictures are great, plus they are important both as documentary value and as an ecological/political statement.)
John,

I liked both of them, but I have to disagree with you--I rather prefer the second one. In the top view, the "scorched earth" is more or a less an abstract form. The lower view keeps that abstractness, but then gives it a movement, a direction, by leading the eye back to the power plants, which gives meaning to the massive ugliness of the mine.
Just my $0.02, or perhaps less.

Sascha and Bruce,
thanks for your kind words.
You convinced me to do a little tune on the photo with
the power plants.
I feel that my way is more the abstract expression of
things, more to create a picture than to make documentation.

I live on 51st (actually I've been here since I was 13). I know exactly where this is, I've watched that whole area go from a wasteland to Trumpville over the years. Have you seen the old New York Central RR switcher they have set up there? A nice homage to the area's history. These are old railroad car float gantries, one of the main modes of transporting cargo across New York's harbors. I used to worry they'd be torn down, but luckily they've been placed on the register of historic places.

This is really the first LF image that I'm able to have some pride in...Mainly because of the soft colors and tonal range. I would have liked to stop down but the wind was introducing a bit of shake and I couldn't afford to have a slow shutter speed. This is part of an ongoing college project. Basically its a study of very expensive urban developments built during the Irish property boom that are empty during the recession. In contrast to the rural 'Ghost Estate' phenomenon where the houses are in rapid decay these developments are too valuable to neglect and are kept in a state of suspended animation, devoid of people.

Folks;
A couple of my modest efforts done in January. This is in the Leaside area of Toronto, and after decades, is being re-developed, so all this old light industrial stuff is now being torn down for condos and Starbucks. Not that there's anything wrong with condos.
Film is Fuji Velvia 100, shot on my trusty Speed Graphic with Rodenstock 127mm lens. Didn't record exposures, but apertures are f22 or so.

City Center, Las Vegas, from my new project on the Colorado River and the development of the West...
Noah,
This seems like a very interesting project that would have long-term appeal. I mean in twenty, thirty, or even fifty years I'm sure it will be important for people in that region to see the growth of urbanization and how the city has reshaped itself over a period of time.
I'm digging what you've posted so far.
-DP
Thanks Dperez. I'll be posting more photos and information on my website soon. I want to take a few more trips since I only barely scratched the surface on my initial visit.
If you're interested in the topic, I can recommend the book "Cadillac Desert" by Marc Reisner. It's a fascinating look at the history of water resource development in the West, which is inextricably linked to the urbanization (and agricultural development) of the region.

Obvious technical negative issues, but I like the image. Putting the "horizon" across the middle can lead to boring images, but this location looks so bloody boring, it is perfect.
Your next photo of the mural -- it was larger than my screen, so I first saw it as a panoramic -- and actually liked it (a lot) better that way.
I use a modified darkslide to get 4x10's -- either way, it is a great format and takes some effort to see.

I thoguht about the horizona nd chose to stick it right in the middle for the exact reason you mentioned!
Funny enough I love my xpan which is about 3:1 and I am good with it. The 2.5 to 1 seems to be rough for me to wrap my head around right now.

Triptych from my documentary series on Willet's Point. The City of NY is slowly buying up these properties to "redevelop" the area into a commercial and housing center. There are no sewers, the city does not plow the streets in winter, and they all pay taxes. It has been a junkyard and auto repair haven for nearly fifty years. I'm going to miss photographing here.
There have been claims of eminent domain abuse, but it seems to be going no where. The people who work here don't have the power to fight the big developers.
It is no an uncommon occurrence when the NYPD blocks off the streets while the DEP raids businesses and writes summonses. This shuts down everyone's business for hours.
It is a stark microcosm for America's love affair with the automobile and it is bisected by three of the largest highways in NYC.
The people here are fond of their little town.
This is a Sunday afternoon -- it is normally very busy.
I do not know why the flag has more than 50 stars.

I love the color! Metered with my new minolta clr meter II and corrected it.
Shallow DOF...not fully intentional. view original and see how the bush in the center is perfect focus and it drops off towards the wall. will look great in a contact print.

In regards to the overexposure/ underdevelop technique. Since your using the instant film, which produce a positive, are you developing for longer than the prescribed time (2 min typ.), as the print will get darker as it develops. With neg film you'd be fortifying the shadows with exposure then constraining the highlights with pulled development (less time in developer). So it would be opposite with the positive film, right?
I dont know yet exactly what I should do, but as for this experiment I let it develop for about 75% of the time it would need (1'40 instead of ~2'20). I exposed it longer too (about 2 EV I think) and got this "whashed-out" blueish/purpleish look which I was looking for... but Im not sure if this is the right or is there a difference between the techniques for negative/instant film. Also I made just some really suttle color corrections in ps, mostly desaturating blues.

I really like this! Beautiful lines, overwhelming in size, and the overexposure gives it a nearly graphical look.

... and finally ...
I posted some images of my "drive 'round bits of Australia" trip in the waterfalls and landscape thread, but had some "urban" shots too.
The second image is kinda obvious, the first was out of an apartment I was staying in on the Gold Coast. Was really happy with that one, as there was ferris wheel kinda ride contraption on the other side of the road, and the building captured the coloured reflections perfectly while it was spinning !
The first was Velvia 100 (I think 4 mins @ f22), second Velvia 50.
I think both were on a Nikon 210mm.

Rockland ME. One of my favorite rooftops in town to photograph from. I've shot these antennas under a couple different conditions, but keep coming back. This day we had the right clouds I wanted and I got vastly different results than the first time. (here: http://jason.philbrook.us/gallery3/index.php/2009year/album149 ) The results are different because I used a red filter, stopped in at the end of the day instead of the middle, and used a different developer.
I took a bunch of urban night shots in Tokyo this summer. I'll be uploading them all to my Flickr account in the "Big Tokyo" set, 4 are uploaded so far.

engl, fantastic as always!!!
How are you satisfied with ektar 100? I saw you are now using it instead of agfa optima 100 (i suppose your stock is over?). It looks quite similar to your previous colors/tones.
Thanks!
Indeed, I've run out of Optima 100. I'm finding Ektar 100 to produce excellent results, but for me it requires more post processing than other films to get the look I want. With most films I can let the Epson scanning software do the negative conversion and then tweak colors in Photoshop, but with Ektar I do the negative conversion myself as well. The film is also more demanding in terms of getting exposure right.
engl, thank you for the details!
here are two shots I made this cloudy sunday. Still on fuji fp100c45, hopefully the last ones, Ive got now everything to start developing at home...

The second is great, Laron, and I'm ashamed to say that I didn't know that building existed, even though we had to live in a temporary place not too far from there when there was a fire in our apartment block earlier this year. Definitely worth a visit, I think - do you know who was the architect?
thanks David!
sure its worth check! that plaza has quite a lot potential views. Im also planning to go back to do some more if I have time. Ive just searched the architects: Buchner Bründler (http://www.bbarc.ch/). Fire? uh, sounds serious! Maybe I should consider having an insurance soon...

Really enjoyed this image. If I had to nit, it seems like there is a very minor convergence that I think could be ironed out. The left line is not parallel to the edge of the frame to my (admittedly tired) eyes. Regardless, I felt it worth singling out as an image I enjoyed!

David, I really like these two, especially the first. Great tones. Is this a railroad boxcar, or? And is the scan from a negative, or a contact print?

thanks Leigh. It is a boxcar and I am very happy that the "boxcar" aspect comes through. I was concerned that this would fall into abstract :)
These are more or less straight scans from the v750; contacts to follow

thanks Corran, I was thinking of doing that but somehow I went for a portrait cut.

this shot was taken in Alschwill, just opposite side of the famous Actelion building:

This is beautiful.

Thanks, I came across this place a couple of months ago - took a wrong turn - and wondered about the history and what was going to happen with it. I'm not surprised that the city, and I imagine surrounding neighbourhoods, want to get rid of it.

Thanks a lot. These scans are not what I would print from, which would instead be drum scans. However... here is a crop taken from the current scan (done with my Epson V750) that would represent this area if viewing on screen at 100 percent pixels of the 9,600 x 12,000 pixel scan.

John, thanks for sharing the 100%crop, its good to see (somehow this would be one of the main benefit, but we almost never see)! Now Im curious how it will look/change when drum scanned... :)
Austin, its beautiful! I can imagine printed out big too!

both scanned with epson v700, dry mount (unfortunately still without anr glass..)
Laron,
Shot #1 is pretty cool; great building, mood, and you got the car tail lights; but #2 is too dark, at least on my screen.
Both, in fact, have a murkiness which, while not unpleasant (and certainly well-executed), might get in the way of communicating the image.
Perhaps too much underdevelopment?
That is, however, just my opinion.
thanks! you've got me, but actually not the development but the exposure time was too few... (I was reading 1sec instead of 1 min on my spotmeter... I was suspicious, but didnt think enough and dont have enough experience neither) then I thought Ill simply throw away these images when I discovered they might be interesting this way so I made them bw and reduced even more the exposure in the second one until we dont percept at all the main volumes. this way I ended up with some misterious light spots that we dont know how are connected... I found this interesting and even thought about making a series of images like this (Ill try multiple exposures too and experiment a bit..) but sure as this just happened and was not on purpouse originally, might not be that "visible" and straightforward, so I'll work on it and maybe there will be something interesting...
Laron,
Agreed that there is something there worth exploring; the first photo is excellent and quite promising in regards to furthering your manipulation effect.
The second one is just too dark, and that probably has more to do with what you're shooting rather than how you're shooting it.
I guess choice of subject is paramount here.
Good stuff.
Ari, thank you for your help/comments, I agree and I'll keep in mind for the next ones!
