Nice pic. yellow color quite curious
Thanks victor
:) Thanks Stone
Lenses was at f/16 and for movements i cant remember really well, i just tried to put everything on focus and tried to correct perspectives. Of course i didnt get that well on the left building.
LF its still pretty new to me, so, trying not to forget something ( tons of movements, open lenses to focus, close lenses, taking the dark slide slowly, dark cloth on top of my head, lupe,... )
I made so many mistakes (new also) until I started talking the process out loud and checking as said each process. Had worked wonders for me. Excellent image!

I really like the colors on this one, it's very reminiscent of older film images, the modern film images are almost too perfect, this one has color hues that I really think are pleasant.

I love the shapes of this but I think the color needs to be tweaked a little. Not much, just saturated a little more and the tone adjusted be be a little bluer. Or maybe it's my monitor.

It's obvious you have paid attention to the composition of this image. The repeating forms, the way the crane boom just clears the tracks allowing the eye to go to the end, the signal tower on the overhead being fully visible, and the sweeping curve of the overpass in contrast to the straight lines in the rest of the photograph.
This is a great photograph (imho). :D
Oh, and demolition of that cardinal rule of composition... "neve put the horizon in the middle".

Two "suburban" landscapes, both straight negative scans from HP5+ developed in Pyrocat-HD.
The first is part of my series of local buildings in Madison NJ, what caught my eye was the very tilted telephone pole in contrast to the geometry of the building:
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7658/17223608375_dca2fc07fc_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/seZuH6)cuccina (https://flic.kr/p/seZuH6) by Pete Lewin (https://www.flickr.com/people/90970144@N06/), on Flickr
The second is the first of several I am trying to take of local gas and water tanks "imbedded" in residential neighborhoods. Of course I would rather have the talent to take another "Petit's Garage" image (George Tice is our "patron saint" of NJ urban photographers), but this is a start:
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7606/17223618635_d60d759a16_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/seZxKZ)fairmontgastanks (https://flic.kr/p/seZxKZ) by Pete Lewin (https://www.flickr.com/people/90970144@N06/), on Flickr
Both are destined for the darkroom and "real" prints. In the meantime, c&c always welcome.

The second one - I thought Tice-esque (meant as a compliment - I'm a big Tice fan and this is my kind of stuff) before I read your description. Should make for a nice print.

Peter, thanks for sharing your interesting images.
I like both, especially Second one.
What a contrast -
House, trees attempting to provide a curtain, dominant "mega" tanks commanding.
Perfect and Almost surreal !
(George would approve.)

Michael, Dennis: Thanks for your kind comments! One of the people I took a printing workshop with early in my "LF life" was a man named Bill Abranowicz, who at the time was Tice's assistant, so I guess that makes me a second-hand Tice!

I took a printing class from Bill about 25 years ago. At the time, he headed the photography program at Peters Valley Craft Center. As you say, he was Tice's printer, and was the master of extracting every nuance of detail out of negatives. And a really nice guy also. Bill was also Martha Stewart's principal photographer when she originally created her magazine, Martha Stewart Living, and was responsible for the style of imagery that they continue to use today.
The last I heard, Bill was living in Westchester and was still active as a photographer.

Hi all, my first post and my third frame from a new (to me) Linhof Technicka.
Took this shot at Buffalo harbour, I was meeting another photographer to trade some medium format gear. I had a 135mm on the camera (because I can close the camera with the lens mounted) and shot this at ISO 50, f8 (not closed down enough!) and about 1/8 of a second or so. I think this is Kodak vericolor film but I didn't really know it at the time. I though the notches (from another sheet) were telling me Fujichrome 100 so that's what I based my exposure on..

More [sub]urban landscapes! These are negative scans, I brought the actual 11x14 prints in to our monthly meeting of the NJ Photographer's Forum for discussion. As the only film photographer showing prints that evening, amongst a bunch of digital/Photoshoppers, I actually received a round of applause in honor of still using chemicals! And a few comments along the lines of "I wish I could make prints like that in Photoshop" (which, incidentally I disagreed with, pointing out that in my opinion a skilled digital printer can produce wonderful prints in that medium). Of course, it leaves me with a general question, which is if one prints the "good stuff" 11x14, how do you get the image up for the forum? My negative scans show what the image looks like, but the actual prints are noticeably better.
First, local garden with cherry blossoms which were in bloom about a month ago:

All HP5+, PMK. C&C always welcome.
Edit: OK, I had to use the LFPF "insert image" option which gives little thumbnails, since my Flickr links no longer seem to work. Anyone else having a problem with something that's changed on Flickr?

In Flickr's 'Share' dialog, make sure you have 'BBCode' selected. If there aren't a bunch of square brackets ][][ involved you haven't chosen the right option.

Living in distinctly suburbia, never quite sure what thread my local scenery fits into. Its not the rusting or industrial views of big cities, nor the majestic landscapes of the open west. Was this something crazy like N-3? The low contrast is really interesting.
Nothing unusual as far as I'm aware, my normal 11:45 in PMK at 70F using a ZoneVI compensating timer. I think the low contrast has more to do with my elementary scanning and Photoshop skills, I'll know more when I get the negatives into the darkroom. Since I tend to print with relatively low contrast, these looked ok to me on my monitor, but I think I'll pull up the scans later and look at the histograms.

I should have said that the tonal separations are close together yet the contrast is nice, in other words I wouod expect the walls and pilar to be much darker because of the tight area, and the lack of sun in that area, I do see possibly overcast skies, but still, the values see, high on the walls, just impressed I guess.

Thanks for the comments Randy and EdSawyer. It was about 9:15 - 9:30 AM as you can see from the hour hand! It was a 15 minute exposure using a 10 stop filter and a yellow/orange contrast filter.
I was timing the shot with a timer on my phone but it ran out of batteries after I had started the exposure. Luckily I was able to continue to time it using the clock in the picture!
With the motion blur in the water I wondered if it was shot by moonlight.
Rob that is a fantastic image of london. I love everything about it.

That looks impossible to me - I know you can do this in PS- but I have to admit I have never seen something quite like this with original film capture. the bikes are sharp then to out of focus the the gate sharp then out of focus then the building sharp.
That's a rather odd accusation. Heavy swing does this easily. Try it on your LF camera with any lens.

Bob,
To me it looks fairly sharp straight through from foreground to background along a relatively narrow vertical center line. Then everything to the left and right is out of focus. Basically what one would expect from swing defocus.
My only reservation in this particular case (unless it was the intention of the photographer) is that the use of back swing altered the geometry of the image (most visible in the distortion of the shape of the gate and building).

12-Apr-2016, 12:46
Not accusing Dude- actually very impressed with this - I have only seen this done with one plane think Mamiya 8 tilt lens Tony Hackensfield did a lot of this or with PS as I mentioned
I would be interested to see more .
I will give this a go sometime as the effect is quite striking.

I get what you are talking about- to me I see different areas of sharp to out in a straight line down the middle need to see more of this.
just the opposite of the Mamiya 8 super critical area of focus we have seen.

When used cleverly, swing/tilt defocus can really mess with the mind particularly when it comes to the perception of scale. I remember once seeing a series of urban landscape/landscape photos done using this technique and due to both the method and vantage point, you'd swear they were pictures of a miniature set or model railroad until you looked closer and realized it was real. It would seem we become accustomed to instinctively associating a shallow depth of field with a large scale of reproduction and vice versa.

Tony H has this kind of vibe going on, it was used a lot with advertising photographers like Tom Fieler here in TO.
I think I like it a lot when done on Large Format- In PS I am not so inclined , not sure why .
I would like to experiment with this with some table top work and solarization..
btw I am in Montreal next Friday Evening 22 - I will post my show here and APUG as soon as I get the french version of the invite done… drop by for a cheap glass of wine and see some of my silver solarizations.

Thanks all for the comments. This was done using camera movements only not software editing. Front and rear swing was used to get the selective focus effect. The rear swing has led to some distortion but I can't think of a way of getting the effect without using both front and rear swing. Some of the distortion could probably be cleared up in software but this is just a quick scan.

I really love this. I am not a fan of those T/S images people keep posting elsewhere, trying to use the effect to make everything look like a diorama, but this, I really dig. It takes me back to photography that was prevalent in the 60s, and gives it that old school feeling. I tried my hand at this just this weekend, and will try to post my attempt later, this one is just beautiful.

Another LF-newbie checking in. If you're using also the back to get the most extreme front swing effect but without distorsion, I would my self first swing the back and then level the camera to the scene so that the back is aligned with the straight lines in the scene so that it wouldn't distort the perspective and then pre-focus and apply the front. That's how I see it.

Miskanarhi,
If you swing the the back and then re-orient the camera so that the back is once again square with the elements in the scene, you're back to where you started (all you've done is an indirect shift).
Using the back to change the plane of sharp focus will always involve a change in image shape.

from one LF newbie to another- I see problem focusing after you put a large swing on - would that not be quite difficult under the dark cloth?

Unless you're using a long lens, is it really that difficult to rotate the front standard while under the cloth?

John Sanderson,
Wow, these are great, they really speak to me, maybe because my style is similar. Simplicity and patterns really work for me. I love patterns in buildings and the lone ship and tank is a story just by themselves.

The Citicorp building is one of the most recognizable shapes in the New York skyline, it's the building that has the top chopped off at an angle. But what always strikes me when I see it from the ground, rather than the Queensboro bridge, is the height of the stanchions at the base. So I took an image. The 90mm on my Wisner didn't quite cut it because it was limited by the bellows when using movements I needed. So the film was scanned and I cheated ever so slightly, by correcting the remaining perspective in Lightroom after scanning.

This image of the gantry and condos in Long Island City is one of my new favorites. Gantry State Park has these structures standing still from the bygone era when trains would come from Long Island or other places, and the freight boxes would be put onto ships and the journey would continue in Manhattan. Some tracks are remaining, but most have been removed, and the gantries still stand as part of the charm of this place. Anyone who has been here also knows the famous Pepsi Cola sign that is a half-mile down the riverfront, which was recently declared an historic monument, the first in NYC that is not a building.
This is the first image where I dared to use the tilt/shifts of the camera to purposely blur out areas of the image so that I could use it to my advantage. I'm really happy with the results.

Both images on T-Max 100, developed at LTI Lightside lab in NYC, and scanned on an old Epson 2450 using VueScan. Enhanced digitally in Lightroom 5 to bring out the vision that I had when taking the images.

Thanks Krish. Took a look at your website. I can definitely see our mutual interests at work...

These both came out very very nicely. Well done.

John, Isaac, and Lucas,
The three of you consistently put up work that is a visual treat to my eyes. While I personally photograph "natural" landscapes, the three of you consistently nail these urban landscapes. Love the work that the you do. Same goes for the "night shots" category. Keep up the excellent work.

Thanks for the kind words! Here's another rural Washington Chinese restaurant.

While looking through old negatives for a show themed "Signs," found an old favorite from almost 20 years ago, Houston Street in NYC. The negative is badly underexposed, and difficult to print (this is a negative scan with some elementary Photoshop levels adjustments), but I enjoy the juxtaposition.

Tri-X, HC-110, probably a Bogen-Arcar 180 (re-branded something Japanese) on an old Wista Folder which was good for carrying around NYC.

Thanks Jim. We're thinking of starting a band...
Not quite urban, but not quite rural either...

So good Isaac! The trailer hill on the right draws me in more than the mountain on the left. This is the kind of place I'd go back to in different lighting conditions.

Thanks, and agreed! Sometimes on road trips you have to take the light you can get. I'll be back eventually...
