I gotta ask. what do you go on for colour adjustments? I mean the originals look pretty darn good, do you have some kind of baseline or histogram or something to go off? I do see the difference but there must be a super critical eye to be able to look at what you first posted and think you need to improve it... impressed at the tenacity of that skill, in any case.

Just calibrated monitors, and I use the Photoshop eyedropper on every evenly-toned area to get a sense of if there's any subtle color casts my brain is fooling me out of seeing. I also try to compare with other photos taken in similar light to make sure my baseline isn't drifting.

Well I can tell you why I like it. For one thing the leaves on the forest floor stretch all the way out up the left side, tying foreground and background together. The trees and the sewer access are nice accents. This is the kind of textural thing I love about LF.
I enjoy it because it feels quiet when I look at it. The small tree/shrub to the right has slight movement - and the red filter really blows out the dead leaves, which easily are given some life back with the toning. It's hard to examine, for me, because the posted image is so small, but it's printed at 22"x27.5", where it really comes into its own and the leaves and texture of the drain make it obvious it's from a large format negative. I appreciate the above-posted comment Steve.

Whalen,
I like it because it depicts the ultimate urban edge. Behind the viewer is the city--and a step beyond the manhole cover is the forest. To the right of the manhole is a faint path leading into the trees, and it would lead me into a quieter, more peaceful place. The manhole cover becomes an escape hatch.
Keith
The location is a rather odd setting. The path is behind an old park near the river. The manhole is near a well in the middle of the woods (which was the original reason for photographing at the site). It's half sketchy, half intriguing.

Whalen - the forum resizes direct links - IMG tags. If your image is hosted on a web-visible server, you can click on the 'from URL' tab on the image uploader and make sure you uncheck the "Retrieve remote file and reference locally" box. Otherwise it uploads and resizes to a small image.

Thanks David.
I'm not entirely satisfied with this print as the sky is not an even blue notwithstanding that the density of the negative there is even. This prompted me to initially doing the bulk of the exposure in the shade and then finishing it off in the sun. A print done today using that method worked:

Steve, as a frequent visitor to the Florida Keys I can give you a little history about this house. Firstly, John was quite fortunate to get this good of a photograph especially LF. Most people, if they are lucky crawl through the mangroves or come in by boat shoot a quick digital photo and move on. There are lots of NO Trespassing signs and the sheriffs office checks there often to keep people away. For John to set up a LF camera is quite an accomplishment. The house was started about 15 years ago and there are a number of theories as to what happened. One is the owner ran in to financial problems and just stopped. Part of the problems appear to be code violations. The Keys have very strict hurricane building codes and it is suspected that violations stopped construction. The county is rumored to tear it down. If you google unfinished house on Craig's Key you can get more information. It's on the market if you have a spare 3.5 Million laying around.

Two "suburban landscapes" (Madison and Chatham NJ) and one "small urban landscape" (Hudson NY, not sure if Hudson is a small city or a large town). All are negative scans from HP5+ negatives developed in PMK.
The line-up of mail trucks caught my eye on Labor Day, I had never seen the entire fleet parked idle at once. I used my 80mm, planning to crop out the foreground when I composed the image.

The back of the Iron Horse Machine Shop in Madison, NJ interested me both because of the textures in the cement, and because from the back it is close to being a cube, the way the pre-K students in my wife's class would draw a building.

Hi, urban landscape is not my thing but gave it a try last week - rather modest gear: Crown Graphic + Ektar 127/4.7, 4x5 Foma 100, Rodinal 1+50, 9m at 20 degrees. You might find the subject interesting though, at least to compensate for the poor technical quality. This is am unfinished building in Bucharest dating from the communist era - construction started in 1986 and was inaugurated at Ceausescu's request in 1989 although only the facade was finished. It was supposed to be used as a history of socialism museum. The thing is huge - i took the pictures from more than 50 metres away and still could only get one third in the frame. So what you're seeing is 1/3 of one of the 4 edges of a building which is shaped as a square.

It's funny how there is a sort or 'dialect' about places. The flora, architectural combinations, street design, even the light, can be distinctive. I doubt that I'll ever make it to Australia, so I appreciate seeing something other than the tourist office material!

Thanks Renato! This spot is interesting because of the wood decking, and the view of the cables which for me are a big part of the interest in this bridge. The Manhattan Bridge and Empire State Building are also interesting to me from this location.
The picture was made yesterday (Saturday) at 12:00. The East River in the background had a few police boats moving back and forth, and also a barge came through a few minutes after I took the photo. As you noticed, not much traffic. Had it been during the week there would likely have been more water traffic.
The 5 deg C and windy weather kept the number of tourists to a minimum as well.

Very nice image.
Great location, composition and camera position.
Yesterday was quite overcast, but the clouds create quite a mood.
I also like the image with a bit of the deck cropped from the bottom of the frame.
Seems to add more importance to the bridge and the arch of its span while the deck boards still lead you right to the bridge.

Some may remember the history surrounding this building or may have actually been there...
39 Whitehall Street was the US Army's infamous induction center where draft age young men were ordered to report for their pre-induction physical examinations.
Arlo Guthrie's song, “Alice’s Restaurant” (1967), described Whitehall St as the place "where you got injected, inspected, detected, infected, neglected and selected.”
The building became an iconic representation of Viet Nam Era resistance to inscription in the face of a questionable war. Numerous protests erupted at 39 Whitehall St. and there were several bombings in the volatile 1960s
By the late 1970s, the 100 year old building, originally built for the Department of the Army, fell into developers' hands. A modern glass facade replaced the original granite face. The building was enlarged and converted into an apartment complex with a street level health club.

Very nice.
I know the verticals are straight, but they look like they're diverging toward the top of the buildings. I guess we are so used to seeing them converge in most photographs.

Thanks, Rich. I agree about the seemingly divergent verticals. However, it's really an illusion. I noticed this when working on the image.
Taking the image into P'shop and placing a guide on the outer edges or vertical lines of any of the buildings, they prove to line up perfectly. The right edge of Army building appears the most divergent. However, it lines up quite nicely with the guide despite the appearance.

Krish, only because you asked....
That man is talking on the phone. The Bell Telephone Co. used to put telephones on the street inside a big box as a convenience. Then, in the 80's and 90's they figured out it was possible to shrink the phones and make them wireless by irradiating them.
The big boxes were no longer necessary because the phones became smaller and smaller so people could carry the phones in their pockets. - Yes, it's really true.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Some industrial decay. The old mill (once a tire factory I'm told) now largely demolished in Milltown New Jersey.

Terry276: Was the lean of the water tank and chimney intentional, or was the camera back not vertical? Normally I wouldn't comment, but in your image, since they and the telephone pole tilting in the opposite direction are the dominant verticals, they immediately caught my eye.

Peter,
The telephone pole was tilted, which I liked, so I futzed with the back to see if I could tilt the smokestack for a convergence effect. It came out a bit stronger than I expected, but when I scanned it I liked it well enough.

Forgot to mention: The negative was processed and contact printed by Gamma Black & White in downtown San Francisco and is one of the very few B&W negatives that I have had commercially processed. Gamma is still in business and does excellent work as is apparent in the above. Their printer will work with you to arrive at what you want.
