This came out almost how I previsualized it, but with more snow on the trees, which I liked. I should have used a faster shutter speed to freeze the snow a bit more.

Just lovely! So silvery. My compliments!

Moved from Puget Sound to Madison Wisconsin. I'll be shooting fewer puddles, I think, and a little bit more ice. This is below Cox Hollow Lake on an icy day - the tripod legs froze at extension. 80mm lens, TriX, developed by Fritz in Milwaukee, scanned here on my V850.

Hi!
I've been reading a lot about the history of the infrastructure of water distribution in Madrid.
I've discovered a wonderful photographer of the XIX century that illustrated the working progress of one of the main achivements of that works, the "Canal de Isabel II", circa 1860.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/bibliotecabne/albums/72157626404090272

I've decided to follow his steps ;-) No, really, but ...

As Madrid grew, it needed more water. More infrastructures were needed. So, the "Canal del Jarama" was build. The Jarama river is one of the main water currents in Madrid. Several dams were raised in the mountains ridges near the capital, and many waterways ("canales)" were built to carry the water from these dams to Madrid.

I took this photographs near one of the most beautiful villages in Madrid, Patones de Arriba. But what caught my eye this time were the pipes and auxiliary buildings of the "Canal del Jarama".

It's often difficult to get snow pictures here as the roads are simply not maintained like they need to be, since snow is a rarity. But today it was just high enough temp to keep the roads relatively okay but didn't melt the overnight snow quickly.

I like the first one Bryan. I like going out when there is a fresh dump of snow on the roads before they get maintained. My Jeep plows right through it. The once crowed roads around here suddenly get quiet.

Three Halloween images, all HP5+, Pyrocat, Rollei 6006. These are negative scans from Photoshop Elements. Sadly I had one of those "Murphy's Law" catastrophes where for the first time in over a decade a roll of wet film right out of the final bath vibrated off the laundry line as I hung up two more rolls. Needless to say, the one with the images I liked most fell on the concrete floor and was scratched, so these will have to be printed digitally rather than in the darkroom.

The following two are a bit problematic, because the tones of the inflated demons are very similar to the background house, I couldn't find a way to increase the contrast between them.

Ha, the two gestures are great. Perhaps try lowering just the blacks to some degree to darken the shadows in an image editor. They look a little light compared to the first image.

I took this a few years ago also with HP5+.

Here is one from a few days ago. I wanted to finish-up a roll, so took this one on a ski traverse (120-format Ilford Ortho Plus in a 2 by 3 Crown Graphic, 90-mm lens, no filter. D76, Ilford MG Deluxe glossy). I put two images together for this one, and did a little cropping, especially the sky.

It was sunny blue-sky day. The bare slope is unusual for winter here, but this south-facing slope is exposed to the wind and sun, and made a great lunch spot.

Very Nice.
I was thinking of visiting the Bread & Puppet Museum.
I was looking at their brochure the other day!

Ages ago in the Bread and Puppet storage barn/museum in Glover, Vt. Stationary life sized puppets, small slice of light coming through a cracked open door nearby, the rest by a burst of flash during a one second, handheld exposure - during which I twisted the camera (Hasselblad 500CM/80mm) on its axis to give these characters a bit of life!:

That certainly brings some contrast to the scene and I agree that it was soft (though an accurate representation - it is gloomy up here right now ;) ).

Can you explain what you did if you don't mind, I would love to learn.

That's easy. I used the levels tool, in FastStone (Windows, free, takes care of 98% of my adjustment needs), but such a tool is present in any image software. What you see below is the histogram of the values, meaning how frequently does a given grey value occur in your picture. In the first screen capture the peak at the right is the sky values; and to the right of that, just a few specks above the horizontal axis; probably coming from dust specks on the negative. Likewise, there is a range of dark values at the left of the histogram that presumably do not convey much visual information.

224101

There are two sliders for the "black point" and "white point" that allow you to declare "anything darker than this just treat as pure black", and similar for white. Slide them inwards to the "first significant dark value" and last significant light value". Do not touch the other two sliders, called output values, unless you want to create a gloomy picture from a sunny scene (try!). See below.

224102

You can see the effect "live" on the image at left. When satisfied just click OK, or Done, or whatever. Now, just for information, re-open the levels tool. See how the histogram has been stretched left and right. Accordingly, the middle, significant values are more spread apart, improving so-called "separation". The white vertical lines in the histogram are something that aficionados make much fuss about, but have no practical importance, especially if the image has some noise (grain).

224103

Furthermore you can experiment with the middle slider, that re-defines where the middle gray will be rendered. You can make a picture "airy" or "heavy" to your taste.

Final comments.

The levels tools is likely to exist also in your scanning software (maybe just in expert or advanced mode). Not recommended, because the decisions made at that stage cannot be undone.
Use digital tools with moderation. If it is too obvious in the final result, it meant it's been overdone.

Lens performance is good, user experience was good and yes the bodies and lensed needed work as they died unexpectedly. Overall, good system but there are IMO better alternatives at far lower cost and better performance.

While the muscle memory has been extensively trained and ingrained to use a classic Blad, they will rest going forward.

Austin - William Clift (met him awhile ago in Santa Fe) had some square images...years ago in a book called "Landscape - Theory," with broad sky areas, and to get these skies even, he'd tape the 120 films (using the existing film to paper tape) into large loops, which he'd then lay down into long plastic open processing tanks - and simply flip them over and over to agitate. Was wondering if you'd heard of these tanks. (not that you need them, mind you...as your skies look great!).

At any rate, I've got some of these tanks stashed away someplace, and will try them out at some point if I can find them. But if it turns out that I won't end up using them, I'll pass these along to you if you'd like them.

Thanks, John. I've been bringing my exposed film to a local lab (Citizens Photo in Portland) for some time now. I haven't had many problems with uneven skies. I do get some dust spots here and there, but as I'm partially digital at this point (scanning and printing), it's an easy fix. I appreciate the kind offer though.

I've run across Clift's work here and there, it's terrific!

Thanks again.

Very unusual. Did the sun image solarize?
It's not solarized, but it is a departure from what the scene looked like in "real" life. The fog was much more high-key, but I purposefully under-exposed the negative and then scanned it very flat, wanting the darkness to emphasize the sun and it's reflection. Here's another photo made a few minutes later:

Tuco...from your image above and the ones posted earlier taken with your Hasselblad and 60mm - its pretty obvious that you are very adept at using medium wide lenses - those with a perspective that can appear to be so "neutral" that one cannot (IMHO) rely on anything other than ones own visual/emotive sensibilities to create truly meaningful images.

Why thank you. I think you can say why I use the lens better than I can. The 60mm focal length on the 500C/M was not a popular choice when I purchased mine, IIRC. And being a 'budget' offering, I think that limited the lens appeal even more. But, damn, I got mine cheap and it was like brand new. And after a while I gravitated to using it more than the 50mm I also have.

I agree tuco - I'm liking the 60mm shots a lot! Maybe I need something between the 40 and 80...

Went down for my annual visit to Hogpen Gap, where a big rock wall along the Richard B. Russell Scenic Hwy is always iced up during the cold months. Shot my first roll of a big batch of Ilford Delta 100 I just bought after running out of Kodak T-Max 100. Sticking with Ilford after seeing the latest price increases from Team Yellow.

Back in the Hasselblad days, most often used focal length was 60mm (Zeiss Distagon 60mm f4). Second was 100mm (Zeiss Planar 100mm f3.5), third 150mm (Zeiss Sonnar 150mm f2.8). BTW, the 50mm f2.8 can be interesting in many ways when used at f2.8. BIG and heavy lens.

Quite similar to my experience with the Rollei, Bernice. The 60mm Schneider Curtagon, 90mm APO Macro and 150mm Tele-Xenar are all favorites. For wide I prefer the 40mm Super Angulon. I also have the 80mm f2 (!) Xenotar, big and heavy but perfect for low light concerts, inside of churches, etc.

I’m thinking about all the empty chairs in the world, created by the pandemic; chairs at the dinner table, on the front porch, out in the yard - empty because a parent, or grandparent died of COVID. Empty chairs where a sibling used to sit - a husband, a wife, a fiancé, a child - lost to this plague.

Photographed on Ilford Delta 400, rated at 160nASA and processed in Pyrocat HD.
The Hasselblad needed some exercise, so that’s what I used. Exposure: 1/30th at f5.6

The wandering fence lines in the distance are interesting and the snow texture is great. Mixed feelings about the power pole, though. On one hand it breaks my vision into the scene, but otherwise the snow blown onto it says a lot about the environment. Maybe this is a daring composition, because I would not have thought of it. I'll give it some thought.

That was taken several years ago around June. Last year Washington State's snow pack was above normal IIRC and this year it is doing okay too. It rains here a lot on the west side of the cascades. Long weeks of cloudy and drizzle conditions as weather fronts backup like a rush hour traffic jam trying to get over the cascade mountains.

I recall an incident many years ago in the news where a drunk person said something along the lines of hold my beer, I have jumped from higher and yelled, 'yahooooo', on his way down. They never found his body IIRC. This bridge is about 180ft/55m high with the northern waters of the Puget Sound squeezing through this relatively narrow passage with the tides.

Although made in medium-format (because my 4x5's relevant shutter needs a CLA), it addresses a challenge I have set for myself, of making LF portraits with, as needed, slow shutter speeds (this was a second) that still indicate activity, mental activity, or both. Comment and critique welcome.

I like it. I've tried to take a self portrait a couple of times but they look more like a police mug shot than anything else.
My mom put a violin in my arms and sent me off to lessons when I was a pre-teen. When I was in middle school, I took up the trumpet ( which I thought was cooler instrument at the time) and played that through half of high school. But today I can't read music to save my life. Go figure.

Thanks, John. The painted "door" definitely caught my eye, and made me wonder who painted it and what they were thinking.

I've said this before, but I always admire your motorcycle photos, they're really well done. As much as I enjoy my modern motorcycle, I wish my engine was half as elegant looking as engines used to be.

We were on our way to a different location early yesterday morning when we passed the iconic Nacoochee Indian Mound here in north GA near Helen. The morning was cold and windy, with massive gusts that were actually the cause of power outages all over the north GA area. Anyway, I've never gotten a great image of the mound and it's accompanying structure due to the light or conditions. It's always difficult. But I've had my eye on it for years, composed with rolling grasses and silhouetted on Yonah Mountain behind it. This morning though we had gotten out so early, the sun was just peaking over the mountains. I stood in the freezing wind until the sky opened up and presented me with one of the most spectacular sunrises I've ever seen.

My wife chastised me that I shot it in b&w, but I wanted that contrast and look. I probably should've had a roll of Portra 160 loaded too, but my other film back has IR film in it at the moment. I think I need another back...

PS: another instance where my tiny Leofoto tripod (https://www.amazon.com/Leofoto-LS-223C-Portable-Weight-Included/dp/B07GKKB416) came in clutch. I splayed the legs and put them right on top of the fence and fence post bordering the fields. My normal tripod would be really difficult to get high enough to peak over the fence, and the barbed wire running between it all would have been tough to dodge if trying to get a shot between the planks.

Bryan, your affinity for fairly extreme wide angle lenses leads to a lot of compositions that are far too exaggerated for my taste. (Note emphasis.) But that Indian Mound image is perfect with a normal lens - it really honors the subject, with no photographic contrivances. Beautiful image!

It sounds like you need to get your wife set up, running the second camera...

She came out with me for a hot second and then immediately retreated back to the car. The windchill made it feel like single-digits and even with base layer + shirt + sweater + jacket I was freezing. I've tried to get her to shoot with me a bit but mostly she likes to watch me do my thing.

I've been going through some older film and found this frame from about 6 months ago. Shot at the local observatory that's just about a mile down the road from me during their "open house" - I set the camera up in the front of the building and opened up the shutter while I went inside to see Jupiter through the big scope, around 4am. When I came back outside the sky was just starting to lighten a bit as it was only about an hour from sunrise, so I hit the shutter and hoped for the best. The light in the bottom of the frame is from a red light that was shining on the path to the door.

Gabe: Amazing depth of field. Very interesting.

Here's a 1941 Harley-Davidson Knucklehead made into a chopper circa 1976. This is a rare opportunity to admire the top end without a fat old gas tank in the way. The story is that this peanut tank chopper made the trip from Seattle to Madison back in the day. Over the weekend my wife and I did a mini-roadtrip through the "Dixie Highway" of Georgia. Officially this road is US-41, and goes from Copper Harbor, MI to Miami, FL. In Georgia, it crosses through Atlanta and then spans across much of the agricultural lands of the southern half of the state, passing through or by dozens of tiny towns and cities, many of which are the county seat.

We had a ball, stopping at most of the cities we passed through as well as various interesting little places - including watermelon fields, an old county jail, and my old stomping grounds of Valdosta, GA. The first image off the scanner is from there, showcasing N. Patterson St., which goes right by my our alma mater Valdosta State. (every time we see US-41, we like to say we are on N. Patterson St., just a little ways from where we first lived together, only a block from US-41).

Big Church, Small Church - Sparks, GA

I drove by this church about a decade ago. I thought the little mini-church serving as the sign was really unique. Always wanted to make a photo of it, so I stopped by on the way back north during my roadtrip at about 7am. That's the moon overhead.

gdi, these are intriguing ideas; admirably thoughtful work. Your first image is arresting and very effective. The composition of the second contains similar ironies that are provocative to explore. however,if you will forgive my voicing my personal opinion here, the print lacks the quality of the first.

Ulophot may have point, depending upon what the poster's intent was. I guess I'd print it more like this, consistent with the striking first image.

I drive by this just about every day - the last remnants of Auraria, GA. This store, originally named "Woody's," was apparently open until the 1980s. While everyone knows Dahlonega as the "Gold Rush" town, Auraria was actually one of the first boom towns of the gold rush (Auraria stems from aurum, Latin for gold and the reason it is Au on the periodic table).

Gabe: I really like these recent images. However, if they were displayed with fewer pixels maybe they wouldn't exceed the size of my screen. Is there a way to display the whole image within the margins of the Forum window? I'm sure they'd have even more impact then.

Thanks.

This is the problem with preview images; people use different screen resolutions and no one size fits all. Personally I don't like it when they are so small that any real detail is lost, but I appreciate that not seeing the whole image at once isn't ideal either. It's a balancing act. The easiest way around it for the viewer is just to left click the image and be taken to the original on Flickr, which will auto-size to your screen. Alternatively, right click the image and choose to open it in a new tab, which will have the same effect.

In future maybe I'll try one size down for the previews.

What web browser are people using? On the ones I use, this site implements auto scaling to fit large images to the vertical size of your browser's window or something along those lines.

The default behaviour is to scale embedded image previews to fit the horizontal dimension of the forum frame, if the image exceeds it. There is no equivalent function vertically as that frame dimension is inherently variable based on post content.
