Bell Telephone (not sure if it is AT&T now) has a "telephone pole farm" in Chester, NJ, where they test the aging properties of different woods and treatments. These are both image scans of HP5+ developed Pyrocat-HD, Rollei 6006 & 80mm:

After the "telephone pole farm" I visited the old Chester Congregational Church. I found the storage sheds out back interesting (rather than the 10,000th gravestone photograph) and the hand prints in particular made me think of the similar handprints left behind both in the South West, and in the pre-historic caves in the Dordogne region of France. Again, negative scans from HP5+, Pyrocat-HD, Rollei 6006 & 80mm:

Went on a crazy canoe adventure yesterday. Scouting a new river that is a tributary to the Alapaha, called the Alapahoochee. The water was low and we ended up finding ourselves in some solid Class 3 white water, pretty rare for Florida and not optimal in a 15ft canoe! We had to carefully trek through the river while passing the boats to each other.

A couple of shots in calm water:

OMG this is beautiful!

Thank You, Rich. I later found its the smaller of two falls on the creek. 'Hope to get to the other one.
Most falls look better w/ slower speeds & creamy/glassy falls. Being up close to this, it screamed energy, rather than just tranquility. The flying droplets frozen in air seemed to say energy more.

John, I didn't know Whidbey had this much vertical - except at Deception Pass. *correction* you're from Whidbey, not the falls. Whidbey has at least once excellent shooter.

This is just gorgeous w/ superb execution.

One more...here at the end I was getting some interesting stuff in the water with longer exposures in the waning light, which I need to focus on next time. Just too much visual interest to take in at one time so my goal will be to keep at it and probably shift to all 4x5 or larger for this work as I think it will be more appropriate for how I want to shoot. Oh and I gotta get out the GND filter and not be lazy.

They handle great and I prefer them for handheld work at faster shutter speeds. On a tripod they still bounce and are too heavy to hike long distances with considering you can build a 4x5 kit with 3 lenses for about the weight of just the Pentax body...weight savings depend on how much film you carry of course.

It's nice not to worry about reciprocity, although I did bracket later on, as the exposures got longer (more than 4 minutes). It's great for large format for those 8,15, or 30second shots, when I make no correction at all.

Randy,

I like the unusual composition of the second one, with foreground elements in focus and pointing to a mysterious mid-distance structure. Maybe it could even take more vignetting in the printing to capture the viewers eye toward the barn (I think you did some already?) Nice work.

Thanks Randy. It was Pan F, which for me is either great or extremely problematic. For example, I don't know what's going on here, the sky is full of crap. I'm very bummed. This time it was Pyrocat with normal agitation. The FP4 I developed at the same time was fine.

Well you are probably right, insofar as the alternatives -- for me, FP4 and ACROS -- are good. But there is a look to the PanF that I like, a smooth transition between tones.

Thank you Randy. Now back to an airplane-related image. This is a low pressure turbine from an Allison T56-A1 turboprop engine - once used on a Lockheed C-130 Hercules transport. This is my first time using Ilford PanF 50 film. It is definitely different from the Fuji Acros 100 I typically use. While more testing is required, I think I like it. Trying different types of film is so much fun, it causes me to think I could easily become a film whore

I gotta get cracking in my development and scanning, I'm falling behind you guys. Great stuff lately.

Shot a couple of rolls of Acros yesterday using a new ND1000 filter I picked up. Thought I'd use it with my Hassy but found the adapter to 67mm I had was Bay VI not Bay 60 so I took out my ol' Rolleiflex SL66, blew the dust off and used that instead. Went to the Berkeley Marina here in Northern California to shoot the pier, some rocks and some waves for 8-16 seconds. Loaded up the Jobo canister last night but then read bedtime stories to my 5-year old daughter and was too tired after that to go develop the film. Hope to develop them today and see what I got...

Beautiful work Rich. The "Flooded Field" image is a favorite. After seeing your images where you've employed the 150/4 Sonnar, I purchased one for my Hasselblad kit. In the right settings, it really helps create some interesting compositions. I'm just experimenting with the PanF for now. I'm not sure if it is as versatile as my beloved Acros, but in the right conditions it produces some wonderful negatives. With more experience, I may find PanF to be more tolerant of my undisciplined skills than I currently think.

The white marks are from me mishandling the film as I struggled to get it onto a metal reel (later I accepted my limitations and stuck to Paterson reels).
I have these four printed out on roll paper so they make a tetraptych. She'd be mad if she knew.

The white marks are from me mishandling the film as I struggled to get it onto a metal reel (later I accepted my limitations and stuck to Paterson reels).
I have these four printed out on roll paper so they make a tetraptych. She'd be mad if she knew.

A shadow self-portrait on top of Shell Mountain, Yolla Bolly - Middle Eel Wilderness Area, CA. Printed yesterday (platinum/palladium print).

Spent 24 or so hours on top of the mountain to celebrate my 60th birthday (2014) while on a solo week backpack trip. If I am not mistaken, I spent my 30th birthday doing the same thing on the peak seen on the right edge of the image (Solomon Peak).

Shell Mountain is only about 6700 feet, but not bad for the coastal ranges. In a heat wave, so the tree offered nice shade thru the day.

Thanks Maris, Jeff and Rich. Yes, I love trees, too. Trees, waterfalls and landscape in general. One of the things I like about this shot, and you can't really see it from the web image, is the razor sharpness of the lens. On a big scan the upper leaves are sharp and distinct, even at 30' or so from the lens.

The auxiliary fish-eye lens first goes on the viewing lens to compose and focus. Then it's transferred to the taking lens for the picture. Edge image quality is awful so it's masked off with hole card. No one notices because fish-eye pictures are a bit weird anyway.

Maris,
Do you always have your spotmeter at the table with you when reading ;)(unless you're reading about the Zone System that is!)
The scene has a high luminance range so the old Pentax Analog Spot sure came in handy. And I often take meter readings of scenes even when the camera is put away; just to keep the eye calibrated I suppose. The book is my new copy of Ansel Adams: 400 Photographs so definitely Zone System!

I like the olive tree photo, but I'd probably keep going back under different light if it's nearby. The donut hole bokeh of the 100 planar there isn't helping. Perhaps stop down a little or use a different lens to render the background differently. Different light would of course accomplish that as well. I'd say the photo is good, but if you like that sort of thing, keep going back to it.

For my style of intimate landscape stuff, I usually go for simple details... This is pushing my style a bit to have such detail.. Monhegan Island, May 2016, Rolleiflex automat tessar (rat), tmy2 in pyrocat hdc.

I too lust over an SWC. In the meantime I found a nice CLA'd Zeiss Distagon T✻ 40mm f/4 CF FLE for under $950 USD. While there's lots of debate over this lens and the SWC's 38mm Biogon I find the 40 to be wonderful and both have their benefits. I'd love to see what you can do with the 40mm.

I've often thought of adding the 40mm Distagon. I'm sure it is a fine lens and think much of the debate between it and the 38mm Biogon can be considered typical photographer hair-splitting. That being said, I have always admired the singular function and design of the SWC with its fixed 38mm Biogon. An alternative would be for me to use my SWC money to get into a 4x5 setup. Over two decades ago I had a Wista 45SP and a couple of lenses. Like a lot of my equipment, it was eventually sold or traded for something "better" - I can't even remember for what. When I'm trying to shoot buildings and structures these days, the notion of having those swings and tilts seems darn nice - not to mention those big negatives :)

BTW Rich, another wonderful tree image.

Austin,

I enjoy many of the images you post in this thread, but IMHO this one is by far the best!! The overall framing is perfect, the placement/timing/gesture of the man is exquisite, the range of tones is delightful. My only nit-pick--and this is indeed a very small thing and strictly my opinion--if I were post-processing this image digitally, I'd remove that small shadow in the upper-right image area. Personally, I don't like to see shadows of things that aren't in the image. But, as I said, that's just me! :)

austin granger
9-Jul-2016, 14:38
Thank you Les.

Thanks Alan! It makes me happy that you said that as I thought that this picture was one of the best from my week in Italy. Honestly, it was one of those photos that felt like a miracle at the time, as if it was pre-destined somehow. But anyway, thank again. The shadow in the upper right bothers me a bit too, but although I definitely do some post-processing work on my pictures (dodging, burning, contrast control, spotting, etc.), removing that shadow (that damn shadow...) felt like a step over the line. :-)

I think I will try the next roll at ISO 320, as these all seemed to be 1/2 to 1 stop overexposed.

At a minimum, the 645n is 15 years old, and there are no spare parts available for repairs any more, and having renewed my love affair with Pentax medium format lenses, I have been thinking long and hard about a 645z, but today I came to a decision—get a 645nii from eBay so that even if my 645n dies I have a replacement.

Maris, Thank you. I appreciate your saying that. Sometimes I think my pictures are a little too witty, or maybe I should say too mannered. Sometimes I think I should get a little looser and just let things "be." That's what I like about your photography actually-it has an honest feel to it. I mean to say, your straightforwardness honors your subjects. And I enjoy the subjects too; sometimes your pictures remind me of the Point Reyes peninsula in Northern California, where I roamed a lot when I was younger. Earlier this year I determined to pause the compulsion to make photographs, take a couple of months off, open boxes of pictures new and ancient and just scan stuff to put it online. Given that gorgeous print, I think it's worthwhile to keep your house at 27C constantly - you know, just to rule out another parameter and thereby contribute to your future success. I have no advice to share on how to negotiate this with your partner and/or children.

Absolutely breathtaking photography in this thread, isn't it? It will force the rest of the humanity to ask itself - were we all blind up to this moment? How can the hidden pearls of this thread be so openly present here without causing social unrest in artistic circles?

Great work! I especially like the sausages the model is holding in her hands. It takes away the unnecessary attention to her face and brings it where one can rightly contemplate the deeper meaning of the picture!

We all have voices we listen to. My muses come to me in the most unexpected moments and places. I try to use them in my photography, that's why I'm rarely separated from my camera even on gray days. Cheers!
