Thanks, John. I am interested in the shapes of collapsing/collapsed structures, and also in photographing the same subject as it changes over the years. Below is the same schoolhouse in 2015. As you can see, a valiant effort was made to save it, but it wasn't enough.

Ohhh, medium format. I scanned some REALLY OLD FILM. 1989, Tri-X Rolliflex 3.5? I think. I miss that camera. Another regret selling. Some background, yes, this is a slaughter house, blood everywhere, about 90 degrees outdoors, no shoes, stepping on blood, cigarrette in the mouth, the STENCH WAS NAAAASSSSTY. The fun part are all the maggots on the street to get there.

Driving through Kentucky I saw a series of large black signs with "Josh for Jailer." Finally I found one with a nice background and I asked the lady if I could take a picture of her house. She was happy to pose with the sign and wanted me to know "Josh is a good man!" I didn't even know that you could vote for the jailer. https://www.flickr.com/photos/144284773@N06/52398269149/in/dateposted-public/231633This has such a lovely atmosphere. May I ask what toner you've used with it? I mix my own thiourea toner for Sepia, but I've never managed quite that soft tint before. Try as I might, I almost always wind up tipping just over onto the yellowish side. I'm usually around 15ml Thiourea + 45ml Sodium Hydroxide + 440ml H²O which is SUPPOSED to give me a dark warm brown. Would you have any tips for me? Example below (yes, your photo is more high key, but I hope you can see what I mean about the yellow edge in mine). Any advice is very welcome!

Hi @Molli. The bleach gives the soft glow, the process depends on the paper and exposure. This was ilford rc iv glossy which doesnt tone well. So I wanted a high key picture, used a grade 3 filter on a normal grade negative, over exposed the print by quarter of a stop, then bleach back to a certain amount (just loosing some highlights) then sepia, but not fully, then refix. try not to loose highlight detail. Lost a little highlights in the print, a bit of masking and burning I could of got it, getting lazy.

@awty Many thanks for taking the time to write up your process for me, I really appreciate it. I'll have to take another run at it with a more suitable negative and some Ilford Multigrade. Given how often everyone's said that it doesn't tone, I've been primarily running my experiments with not just old, but positively antique papers. No trouble toning them, just a tad of bother getting them to stop! [emoji16]
Thanks again for your time, your detailed response is very helpful and the detail definitely proves you're far from lazy!

Moving away from the tech and specs, though, that really is a lovely photo you've crafted there.

Generally with papers that stain well, I dip in selenium first, then a weak bleach and short sepia, but its really needs some trial and error to get it right. I like to keep the blacks as black possible

Thanks, I like to create an atmosphere in a picture, many ways of doing so.

That 60mm can throw you off if you let it. It sounds like it's closer to "normal" than it really is, and the DOF is quite a bit deeper than that of the 80mm. It's bit me on the butt a few times as well, but it's a lovely lens.

Thanks John. Yeah I like the lens. I have stopped it down to f19 on occasion to get some near/far in focus and it does okay at that. I also carry that 8mm extension tube as standard equipment in case I need some close up capability. Your shots turned out nice.

Back in the Hasselblad V days, the 60mm f4 (chrome, Zeiss made it for 1-2 years) was one of the most often used focal lengths. IMO, one of the best focal lengths for 6x6..

I purchased this lens not knowing much about it, except it was one of three 'budget' versions made for the camera, because it was being sold at a good price, was in like-new condition and I was looking for something wider than the 80mm that came with the camera. I learned later it has a newer CFi housing (with a crippled feature) and the same optics as the CFi version of the lens; whereas, the other budget lenses have different optics than the CFi versions IIRC.

Often sought after Hasselblad lenses from the wedding/pro studio working photographers back then:

60mm Distagon, leaf shutter.

100mm Planar, leaf shutter.

150mm Sonnar, leaf shutter.

Leaf shutter was absolutely essential for "synchro sun". Extremely common back then to use electronic flash with a given shutter speed. Or why the leaf shutter Hasselblad lenses and basic 500 (fill-in the variant) were SO popular.

The "F" no shutter in lens, focal plane shutter in body cameras (2000 series) where the least desirable, yet some of the most interesting Zeiss lenses were for the F body only.

50mm f2.8 Distagon, Large aperture wide angle effects, HEAVY & Big lens, use it at f2.8.

110mm f2 Planar, 150mm f2.8 Sonnar, Good into out of focus rendition at full aperture, stop down the pentagon iris does not play nice..

Notable Hasselblad lenses are:

40mm f4 FLE Distagon.. it's wide.

135mm f5.6 Macro Planar, likely the least appreciated lens in the Hasselblad system. Excellent close up, excellent at infinity. Can be used with the Variable extension tube, nice combo.

250mm f5.6 superachromat.. the best of Hasselblad tele lenses..

CFi hasselblad lenses were the "budget" option back when new, not that popular back then as most working photographers did not like the build and plenty of good used and easy to get service was common back then.

T* Zeiss lenses offered higher contrast, better flare control than the non T* versions, resolution was much the same.

Bernice

Thanks again John. It was my normal development. For fog pictures, I reduced the scanning contrast more than I normally would otherwise. And I try to avoid excessive adjustments with any clairty/structure tools (can cut through the fog).

Tuco...nice transition from the mirror-like smoothness of the foreground (what is that anyway...some sort of spillway?) - feeding into the rest of the image. Helps it to acquire an almost surreal/otherworldly quality...especially in combo with those rock formations. Almost like sometime in the distant future...terraforming a far away, previously dry planet by adding water. Nice!

...what is that anyway...some sort of spillway? ...

Thanks a lot John. I'm glad you like it.
I'm between two large rocks. I would chase the retreating wave as it funneled out between them, stop at that converging point and take a shot. The next incoming wave would force me back. I shot an entire roll running back and forth with little time to compose and not certain of the outcome.

Thanks. The outgoing wave was not much risk. But I also stayed there waiting till the last second for the more risky situation of the incoming wave. I wear knee-high rubber boots at the beach.

Finally…a print from a recent negative! Recent for me, that is - from last August, our latest (yearly) trip to Monhegan.

I’d noticed this Seagull laying on the rocks in (wouldn’t you know it) Gull Cove - and managed to get off a couple of nice hand-held photos (125th f/11-ish) using my Fuji-Voigtlander 667, on TMY film, souped in PMK:
232762

(Just checked the print again...and it looks considerably warmer (almost neutral) than what I see here on my monitor)

Edit: will likely further refine this print (didn't have time yesterday) with a little more burning along bottom and right edges...and a fresher sheet of paper (Ilford Classic) will help to take care of the somewhat over-darkened left/upper left edge - as the sheet I'd used had been somehow slightly light-struck.

Further technical printing notes: 100mm companon-s at f/12.5, Zone 6 enlarger column elevation 32.25 inches (for print size of 15 x 19"), split-grade print (Heiland VC LED at -15 power):

Full Green (grade 0.00) exposures - 20 seconds overall, plus 10 sec. extra for white-feathered areas on seagull, plus 8 sec. burns of upper, right, and lower sides. Additional 8 sec. on left looks overdone as paper had been previously light struck.

Full Blue (grade 5) exposure - 4 seconds overall.

Print souped in Moersch 4812 at 1:14

Fuji GW690, GSW690, and variants in 680 and 670 formats

Also known as a 'Texas' Leica. But since the small format Leica has a 3:2 aspect ratio, any medium format rangefinder would also need that aspect ratio to be a scaled up version I would say. So a 6x7 format rangefinder would be a jumbo rangefinder but not a jumbo Leica, IMHO.

Jumbo Leica = Texas Leica = Fuji GW690 or GSW690..

Applying "Texas" to this slang moniker has specific language and meaning implications thus, "Jumbo"..

It is the visual tension in the second image that interests me. The road and its shadows lead the eyes one way. The cone of light from the left edge expanding across the image leads the eyes another way, while the upper branches and leaves swoop down the oppposite way. And all this movement wonderously runs counter to the actual direction the light is entering the image. Love it! Then in the middle of all this madness (movement) stands those black solid un-moving trunks.

Bit surprised with the comments on image# 2. This image almost did not happen, mixed emotions with this scene during that moment.

Image happened while towing the TK23s kit up this road then looking back at that row of trees, coastal fog rolling and low angle of sun (cone of light) during that time of day casting those shadows on the road from the row of trees. Looked interesting, debated on how to make it work.. set up the TK23s outfit in a shady spot that was a trade-off between the fierce back lighting and workable composition, the exposure was wonky due to the contrast ratio involved, ended up with something like a N-2 with Ilford Pan F plus 120 roll film. There is shadow detail in the tree trunks that does not reproduce at all in the posted digital data version. There is also a sense of the fog in the air that did not reproduce well at all in the posted digital data version.

Enjoy,
Bernice

Usually the stupid animals maintain a perfect composition during all the preparation and break up just before the photographer is ready to trip the shutter. But here it's perfect. Converging semi-circle of sheep in the foreground; more numerous and visually smaller into the background, merging together, until the fog merges them into the invisible horizon line.

Ha, thank you. I can relate to having experienced what you wrote of, especially with cows. Cows are generally uncooperative. I took another picture of the sheep looking at me with alarm, but I preferred this more peaceful version.

It's a pleasure to see the thoughtful, sometimes, beautiful architecture of older public works buildings such as this. Modernism (in my view, in case I need to say that), along with anti-industrial ideology and the prevalent economics of the past too many decades have made it seem an extravagance, at best. But if you look back at, say, the Italian Renaissance, beautiful buildings and plans for beautiful cities -- creations that could inspire a public about the value of beauty in life -- were considered part of the means to elevate the cultural level of the population. Of course, many of the building were built by wealthy families. But there's no inherent reason that a productive modern economy can't support such important developments.

In the mid-1970s, I visited a college campus that had a new library. I was most dismayed by the interior, which was the first building I had seen that left the raw, gray concrete structure bare and used nothing but functional and plain additions such as the handrails in the similarly bare staircases. Having been in beautiful or at least welcoming libraries, both public and private, I had always thought of them as places to inspire the visitor. This one seemed designed to drive them out.

On my way to Florida for some snowbird duty late last March I took my customary route down the Natchez Trace Parkway and stopped at one of my favorite places for B&W photos in cypress swamps, which is just south of Jackson and called the "Pearl River Cypress Swamp" pull-off. There is a nice little parking lot right off the NTP and a well maintained wooden walkway just above the water line and some additional paths along the sides of the swamp ponds. In late-March there is usually a fair amount of fairly fresh water in the ponds (so making for nice mirror reflections) and the foliage canopy is just beginning to push out so the day light is nicely filtered and not harsh down at ground level. These two pics were made with a Mamiya 7ii and either 65 or 80mm lenses, using Acros film. I am not sure, but probably I was using a CPOL filter.

There's loads of detail in my silver gelatin prints of these images, but I limited these files made from films scanned with my Coolscan 9000ED and edited in NIK's Silver Effects 2.0 to just over 1.0 MB.

In what way? Some farming areas will get rid of anything but the crop. Others will let trees grow and in later years enjoy the shade as well as the bit of water they save when wind blown snow drifts behind them. Choices to make when one is raising food.

John,

Thank you for the kind words, I appreciate that.

I am working on what I hope will become a book about the Palouse region of Eastern Washington and Idaho, and am doing some writing about my impressions and experiences there. Honestly though, the book is going to be more personal than political, partly because that's what I feel compelled to do, and also because I don't feel qualified to go much beyond that. I can't even attempt to diagnose our country's problems. I will say though, that it seems to me that people in both rural towns and cities are suffering, and that they are often suffering from the same problems (poverty, drug addiction, etc.). It strikes me that the people with wealth and power attempt to pit us against each other in part to distract us from considering the larger structural issues that are the cause of our troubles. Perhaps the divide, if there must be one, should be up/down instead of left/right.

Sometimes I think that America should institute a sort of foreign exchange program, except it would take place inside the country; send a Portlander to live with a family in Winona, and a person from Winona to live with a family in Portland. In my experience, it's hard to despise people once you get to know them. Most people anyway. :-)

Thanks again.

We did explore the Trace up about 120 miles, and I shot this image up at the Cypress Swamp that I don't think could be more different than what JMO posted.

JMO and Corran: Great images. Especially interesting to me because just read a book named "Swamplandia!" Really made me receptive to these shots. Congratulations.

Thanks John!

In Natchez the one historic tour I really wanted to do was to Longwood Plantation. You can read all about it online but the most interesting part is that most of it remains uncompleted, with a massive interior view up to the 6th floor. I knew I wanted to bring my Hasselblad and 40mm lens for this shot, which to be fair has been taken a zillion times, but so be it. I had a roll of Ilford Delta 3200 in one back and HP5+ in the other. I have like 3 shots left on the 3200 but developed the HP5+, so here's a scan of this image. We'll see if I like the 3200 more later. Metering for this photo consisted of setting the lens wide-open and deciding I could decently handhold a 1/30th shutter speed while holding the camera straight out over the center looking up:

In what way? Some farming areas will get rid of anything but the crop. Others will let trees grow and in later years enjoy the shade as well as the bit of water they save when wind blown snow drifts behind them. Choices to make when one is raising food.

My critic was about the intensive farming practices which now prevails in most places in France and threaten biodiversity. I bet this tree will disapear soon, like most of them around. I do not blame farmers, many of them being aware of the problem.

Dave Sh: Nice winter shot, but did you reverse it intentionally? Now you've got me thinking about which way I "read" a photograph.

Here's the Curtis Prairie pond at the UW Arboretum. TriX, 80mm, scan from film.

Lovely, Gabe, in many ways -- timing, light, composition with its contrapuntal rhythms, and an especially nice use of the wide lens without the wide "look."

Hi John,

The reversal was simply based on how I liked the aesthetic of how it read after reversing vs. the original orientation.

Cheers,
Dave

This is powerful. I don't want to highjack this thread into prohibited non-photo topics, but when I look at small towns like this it seems it's no wonder that our society is so polarized. People in Winona and places like this really live in a different country. I hope you have a long-term goal of combining many of these images into a new book, along with your reflections on them.

David Plowden was making similar images in the 1960s and 1970s. The decay of small towns is not a new phenomenon...

Thanks for the historical view. Maybe an interesting re-photography project to see how 50 years has changed things? At any rate, I think the gulf between small town life and the metropolitan lifestyle is far greater today. I'll look at the Plowden images.

Agreed.

Plowden is a wonderful photographer. I have his book "Imprints," which was a retrospective at the time it was published. Excellent reproductions, and can be found used (it's out of print) for almost nothing.
