Yoroshiku! from Tokyo Japan!

Ok so I've been around for a while actually but I guess its time I introduced myself and participate rather than just read. Im a working photographer out here in Japan, struggling but making ends meet. If I could convince my clients more often I would be shooting everything on my Ebony SV 45 or on the Horseman L45 Pro that rarely makes it out of the case these days. Unfortunately more often then not Im resorting to digital but thats that...

I work mainly with people; portraits, fashion, advertising and the like. I also run a smallish still production house if your every heading out this way for work give me a shout out!

Currently working on a personal project temporarily entitled "Cold Weather Surfers" but Im thinking of renaming it "Shonan Surfers" after the area Im working on it in. All shot on the Ebony and quite a site Im sure, 6"4 skinny as a rake me running up and down the beach with my camera chasing down surfers who just want to get but up to the showers and warm up a little.

Pretty cool intro Nathan. I can only imagine how fascinating Japan is.

Oh and if you wondering about the technicals on the process for these display images, negs taped to the window with 2" Black Pemacel Paper tape and shot with a Canon Eos 1DMII. Ouch!

Hi Nathan,

Nice to encounter a photographer on this forum living in Japan. I lived in Japan from 2003-2005 as an English teacher, far from the bright lights of Tokyo and deep in an "inaka" seaside village about 3 hours south of Nagoya (Mie prefecture).

I will always be fond of Japan. It's where my love of photography began. My job gave me ample time to explore all five islands and I did so as often as possible, always with my camera ready. Now I try to return at least every other year... and during my next trip I will finally be shooting in large format! I only wish I had an LF camera when I lived there before... but that gives me reason now to return to the places I enjoyed most. I think Okinawa deserves a second visit.

Good to see you remember some Japanese Andrew! I am constantly in awe of the beauty of Japan and can totally understand. I get to travel a lot for location scouting and vary rarely am I dissapointed with the country side (industrial hell holes excluded). Nice images on your site, especially the coal mine stuff. Can really tell you put in the time to make some special images.

Over the past twenty years I have spend several weeks in Japan for business. Most of the work was centered in the Kanagawa Perf. Photographic opportunities are everywhere ranging from architecture including buildings and temples; small farms and orchards, to beaches, rivers and bridges, to parks and kids. The train system not only provides transportation but also a lot of potential photographs. You could spend days just on the train system and in the stations.

The people are friendly and the food is great…….

If you get to opportunity – go!

I'm going there this summer with my family. My wife is from there (Kurume, just south of Fukuoka City). I lived there for about 12 years and been back here for 7...been back there only once. Really looking forward to visiting my old haunts with the camera. Will visit the old coal mines (still have a key that was given to me by the municipal head of culture...that's a loooong story....in a nut shell, he caught me hopping over the fence once at a closed mine, and said to me through the gate, "wouldn't you rather prefer a key so that you can get in an out?". Japanese people are great.
