Large Format Photography Forum FAQ

Here you can find answers to questions about how the board works. Use the links or search box below to find your way around.

What is the Large Format Photography Forum all about?

The primary objective of this forum is to support and expand the craft of large format photography, as defined here. The structure of the forum, and the guidelines (rules, often referred to as “terms of use”) are intended to further that goal for the long term within the confines of a non-commercial site, staffed by unpaid volunteers as moderators. We especially encourage questions which will help build a repository of knowledge about the tools and techniques of large format photography. Commonly accepted definitions base large format photography on 4"x5" and larger sheet film (or the 9x12 cm metric equivalent), regardless of the style of camera being used. This is the definition we will use. We would also consider a digital back with a nominal sensor size of 4"x5" or larger to be LF, as well, regardless of technology. Over time, these definitions and boundaries have changed. The current definition was established in September, 2014. Prior threads that no longer fit this definition will be moved to the appropriate forum only if new postings are made within them. Unregistered guests can read the text of posts in the main sub-forums, but only registered members can make posts and create new threads. When logging in from a secure computer, be sure to check the "Remember Me" box. Otherwise, various permissions issues may occur.

What are the basic usage guidelines (da "rules")?

Principles of Moderation

  1. The Forum is moderated with the goal of sustaining lively, informative and enjoyable discussions focused on our primary objective. Topics or behavior that distract from this goal are not appropriate and may be subject to moderator action. Discussions of religion or partisan politics are forbidden everywhere on this Forum. More generally, this Forum is not an appropriate venue for debates over divisive social or political issues. Personal attacks and rudeness will not be tolerated. Beyond these general rules, a wide scope of discussion is welcomed. Where judgment calls are needed, the more closely a discussion relates to our core mission of supporting large format photography, the more sympathetic we will be. We will, at our discretion, progressively warn posters, delete posts, temporarily suspend threads or close threads outright if these rules are violated, or if we judge that a discussion is otherwise going off the rails.
  2. Even though experience might suggest otherwise, we will not assume that discussions of photography-related public-policies or discussions of the work of photographers motivated by social or political concerns will necessarily lapse into partisan politics or bitter, divisive debates. However, if and when posts appear that demonstrate a breakdown in decorum, we will delete the offending posts or excise the thread at the point the discussion appears to go off track. If several such attempts and warnings fail to resolve the situation, we reserve the right to close the thread.
  3. We will not permanently ban members without first obtaining a consensus of the moderators, except in the case of spammers.
The forum has a long history (in "Internet time") of civil discussions of LF-related topics, even when opinions on a topic differ. Here are a few guidelines that contribute to maintaining the friendly environment. Please remember that these guidelines are a part of the larger FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) document that can be found by clicking on the "FAQ" link in the navigation bar near the top of the display. The FAQ includes information about how the forum software functions, and how to do various things.

The Basics

  • Moderator decisions are final, but we do listen to thoughtful, polite suggestions regarding administrative policy.
  • Your Responsibilities - By accessing this site, you agree:
    • to keep your posts, PMs, and e-mail communications with other members on-topic and civil, and
    • not to abuse other site users - including posting offensive comments (like personal attacks or insulting language), sending them threats, unsolicited bulk email or commercial solicitations, or baiting/enticing them to violate forum guidelines.
  • Logging In - When logging in from a secure computer, be sure to check the "Remember Me" box, otherwise various permissions issues may occur.
  • Maintaining Forum Decorum. To have a healthy and informative forum, it's essential that participants maintain a respectful and professional decorum. Name calling, personal attacks, character assassination, coarse or inappropriate language, or enticing/baiting others to violate forum guidelines will not be tolerated anywhere within the forum (i.e. in posts, PMs, or e-mails to other members). Generally speaking, in responding to a post, try to respond only to the content of the thread and not to the individual.
  • The main forum is only for questions specific to LF photography (see above).
General photography questions and questions related to photography with other formats should be asked in The Lounge here, or on other general-photography forums.
  • Do not post test messages. If you want to participate, just go ahead and post a question. You can use the "Preview Post" button to see what the post will look like.
  • Be sure to give a descriptive title to your question. For people searching or browsing the archives, a nonsensical or uninformative subject (like "Oops!", "Read this!", or even "Lenses") just makes it harder for people to find answers to questions.
  • Before you post a basic question to this forum, please make sure you have quickly browsed the LF home page (where you will find the answers to many basic questions), and searched the site using the search box or an external search engine that supports the "site=www.largeformatphotography.info" parameter.
  • Reporting Posts - Our moderators are volunteers and are not able to constantly monitor threads throughout the day. If you find a post offensive, please notify the moderator group by clicking the icon at the lower left of the offending post. This is the only accepted way to report posts.

Announcements

  • Conferences, Workshops, Books and Gallery Openings - Announcements of conferences, LF-related trade shows, workshops, book releases and gallery openings may be posted to the Announcements sub-forum (one per event only, please).
  • New products - Announcements of new products and services of specific interest to large format photographers may be posted to the New products sub-forum with advanced moderator approval.
  • Crowd-Funded Projects - Crowd-funded projects on platforms such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, etc., that relate to photography may be announced once, and once only, in the Kickstarter Announcements section. All subsequent discussion of that campaign must be confined to that thread. Projects of no interest to photographers (in the judgement of the moderators) will be removed.

Links

  • Links to published articles - Direct links (i.e. not through index pages that contain promotional text or blatant advertising) to on-topic published articles are OK to post, as long as those pages are freely available to all (i.e. no paid subscription required), and do not require further contact with the poster to gain access.
  • When posting links to material on other web sites, please provide a link to the material, not the home page of the site. Repetitive postings of links to other discussion boards are not appropriate.
  • Links to active or inactive eBay (or similar sites) listings are allowed if the purpose of the post is to discuss or ask questions about a feature or the technology used in the product. To preserve the value of the discussion after the link goes dead, however, please include a sufficient description of the item (e.g. brand name, model number) such that the question or discussion can still be understood. Bare pointers to a currently active sale, or comments about the price of the sales offering, serve only to promote the sale, and are prohibited. Likewise, links to the poster's own sales, or those of a friend or associate on such sites are also still prohibited as being promotional, and counter to our non-commercial ideal.

Essential Prohibitions

This is a family-oriented forum, so for that reason, and to keep the forum cordial and non-commercial, the following types of posts are prohibited.

  • We will delete photographs that would prevent us from showing up on Internet searches in safe mode, as best we can make that determination. That means we reserve the right to delete photographs depicting sexual acts, violence, gore, or acts that are illegal in the U.S.
  • Posts advocating for partisan politics, religion, etc. are not allowed anywhere on the forum. (see Principles above.) We reserve the right to delete posts that demonstrate advocacy for social issues that are plainly intended to spark divisive debates on the merits of those issues unrelated to the role of photography. The line is between photographic discussions that relate to social issues, versus arguing about the merits of those social issues irrespective of photography.
  • Multiple-ID registrations will not be tolerated and persons found to have done so, and continue to use them, will be permanently banned at the discretion of the moderators.
  • Equipment Value Questions: Although value may come up in the discussion of the general features of a piece of equipment, it is impossible to provide an accurate valuation for a specific piece of equipment for sales or insurance purposes without a physical examination and testing. Further, such questions during a new member's probationary period will likely be interpreted as a back-door effort to sell the item, subjecting the poster to unpleasant reactions. Because of that, valuation requests are not allowed, and may be deleted. The best ways to get an approximate value range: (1) examine past sales at auction sites (2) search the web sites of vendors who sell used equipment. There is also a "sticky" thread in each of the major equipment categories about how to value a particular piece of gear.
  • Profile "signature" content - While it is OK to include a simple link to your personal (preferably LF-related) Web site in your profile "signature", please do not include descriptive text that might be interpreted as an advertisement of whatever services or products you might provide.
  • People who register for the purpose of publicizing links to non-LF sites will be banned and the posts deleted.
  • Links to blogs are prohibited unless the blog post specifically responds to an LF topic being discussed within the thread in which the link is posted. A one-time Announcement of an LF-related blog is allowed in that section, however.
  • Maintaining Forum Decorum. To have a healthy and informative forum, it's essential that participants maintain a respectful and professional decorum. Name calling, personal attacks, character assassination, coarse or inappropriate language, or enticing/baiting others to violate forum guidelines will not be tolerated here. Generally speaking, in responding to a posting, try to respond only to the content of the thread and not to the individual.
  • Other Commercial Posts - Except as noted herein, other "promotional" posts promoting your own business enterprise, or one to which you are financially connected (e.g. owner, employee, contractor), are not allowed.
  • Posts that fall outside the guidelines are subject to deletion. Participants who repeatedly violate the guidelines can have their right to participate suspended or permanently revoked at the sole discretion of the moderators. Any request for discussion or reinstatement should be made via the "Contact Us" link that appears at the bottom of all pages.

Buy-Sell Sub-forums

Classifieds (for sale, for trade, or wanted ads) should only be posted in the appropriate sub-forum, which is open only to those who have been members for 30 days or more. Classified ads are now divided into three sections: For Sale - For Trade, Wanted to Buy, and For Sale - Member-made LF Gear and Accessories, with the following rules specific to each section. The displays of these three sub-forums in the main index are ordered by the original post date, latest first, not the date of the latest post within the threads. Similar to classified ads in a newspaper, only the original poster (OP) can post in the buy-sell sections. All comments, questions, or corrections should be sent to the OP via PM or e-mail. If such a communication indicates a clarification or correction should be made to the listing, the OP should post the clarification or correction to the thread, and potentially ask the moderators to correct the title of the thread.

For Sale / For Trade

  • FS/FT ads are limited to photographic equipment (all formats), photography books, and prints being sold by registered members.
  • The item for sale must be owned by and in the possession of the seller or its location and ownership status fully disclosed in the sales listing
  • No for-sale postings by retail establishments with more than $1,000,000 in annual revenues.
  • Items that the member may wish to simply give away should be listed here, with the preface "Free" in the thread title.
  • For-sale postings require a stated price. No auctions or bidding processes are allowed. For-Trade posts should be reasonably specific about what the OP is willing to take in trade.
  • FS/FT postings cannot include links to external sales sites (eBay, etc.) or listings on other forums.
  • Listings in the FS/FT sub-forum must include "FS" or "FT" at the beginning of the thread title.
  • All transactions resulting from listings in this forum are entirely at the user's risk. The owner and operators of the forum make no representations regarding any listing, and will not intervene in the event of any dispute. Any dispute between parties must be resolved outside of the forum, except that either party may post in the "Buyer-Seller Advisories" section, subject to the rules and limitations of that section.
  • We recommend that sellers include the country from which the item will be shipped, and any geographic, currency, or method-of-payment requirements or constraints.
  • Threads in the FS/FT sub-forum will be sorted according to the time-stamp of the first post. Thus, later posts will not bring the thread to the top of the main sub-forum listing.
  • Only the seller is allowed to post in this section. The seller may post updates revising the item description, price or other terms of sale. However, continual posting of minor changes for the purpose of bumping within "Today's Posts" or other Forum views is inappropriate. Persistent use of this tactic may result in thread closures or revocation of listing privileges. All questions, comments, clarifications, or offers must be submitted to the seller via PM or e-mail. If such a comment points out an error in the original post, the seller should post a clarification in the original thread, and/or ask the moderators to edit the title of the thread. Potential buyers who wish to track a particular item are encouraged to subscribe to the thread, so they are notified of changes in price or terms.
  • A member may start no more than three FS/FT threads per day.
  • If an item has not sold in 30 days, the seller may close that thread and post the FS listing again. It is recommended that the seller include the results of any discussion about the original thread to avoid repeating them in the new thread.
  • Sellers are required to close their for-sale threads when the item is no longer available for any reason, preferably with a post stating such.
  • Sellers have the right to do business with whomever they please.
  • Also, see the descriptions and rules for the "WTB" and "FS - Member-made" sub-forums for those types of transactions.
  • Members who violate the rules repeatedly are subject to moderator action, including loss of access to these sections, and/or being banned from the forum altogether.

Wanted to Buy

  • WTB ads are limited to photographic equipment (all formats), photography books, and prints desired to be purchased by registered users.
  • The thread title must be prefaced with "WTB," followed by a brief description of the specific item you are looking to buy.
  • Please research the item in advance, so the body of the post can be as specific as possible. If you aren't sure about exactly what you want to buy, post a question in the appropriate subforum first.
  • Links to external sale sites are allowed in this section, either as an example of the item the poster wishes to buy, or in a reply as a pointer to where the item is available. Please do not post links to similar or suggested alternative items, however.
  • Only the original poster (OP) is allowed to post in this section. The OP may post updates revising the item description, desired price or other desired terms of sale. However, continual posting of minor changes for the purpose of bumping within "Today's Posts" or other Forum views is inappropriate. Persistent use of this tactic may result in thread closures or revocation of listing privileges. All questions, comments, clarifications, or offers must be submitted to the buyer via PM or e-mail.
  • Buyers have the right to do business with whomever they please.
  • A member may start no more than three WTB threads per day.
  • Members who violate the rules repeatedly are subject to moderator action, including loss of access to these sections, and/or being banned from the forum altogether.
  • Members are required to close their WTB threads when the item is no longer desired for any reason, preferably with a post stating such.

For Sale - Member-made LF Gear and Accessories

  • For-sale ads here (Member-made LF Gear and Accessories) are limited to new LF gear, accessories and LF darkroom gear actually made personally by the member placing them up for sale. This includes such things as LF cameras (nominally 4x5 and larger), backs, lens boards, focusing screens, developing tubes, etc.
  • There is a limit of one post per type of item being made and sold by the individual member. The seller/maker can update the thread with any changes in description, price, or terms of sale, however.
  • Posts regarding services offered by members are not allowed in this section (see the Resources sub-forum and its applicable rules).
  • All postings require a price. No auctions or bidding processes are allowed.
  • Threads in this sub-forum will be sorted according to the time-stamp of the first post. Thus, later posts will not bring the thread to the top of the list in the main sub-forum display.
  • postings here cannot link to external sales sites or listings in other forums.

Community

For Sale/For Trade - USE OF THIS AREA IS STRICTLY AT YOUR OWN RISK. This is a private area open only to those who have been members for 30 days or more. FS/FT ads are limited to photographic equipment (all formats), photography books, and prints being sold by registered members. The item for sale must be owned by and in the possession of the seller or its location and ownership status fully disclosed in the sales listing. Items that the member may wish to simply give away should be listed here, with the preface “Free” in the thread title. Please read the Guidelines specific to this section prior to posting, or risk deletion.

Wanted to Buy - USE OF THIS AREA IS STRICTLY AT YOUR OWN RISK. This is a private area open only to those who have been members for 30 days or more. WTB ads are limited to photographic equipment (all formats), photography books, and prints desired to be purchased by registered users. Please read the Guidelines specific to this section prior to posting, or risk deletion.

For Sale - Member-made LF Gear and Accessories - USE OF THIS AREA IS STRICTLY AT YOUR OWN RISK. This is a private area open only to those who have been members for 30 days or more. For-sale ads here are limited to new LF gear, accessories and LF darkroom gear actually made by the member placing them up for sale. Threads (in this sub-forum) will be displayed in the date/time order of the initial post, newest first. Please read the guidelines for this section prior to posting, or risk your post being deleted.

Unsatisfactory transactions from threads in any of the sale-related sub-forum may be reported using ONE post that states the following: "Unresolved issue with _______ on this sale." It must be reported in the specific thread in which the item was offered, and must not provide further details.

Buyer/Seller Advisories - Any reports about the outcomes of transactions with providers of products and services to large-format photographers must be made in the "Buyer/Seller Advisories" sub-forum. The purpose of this sub-forum is to provide a service to large-format photographers who need to know whom to trust in a small market. All posts in other forums complaining about specific transactions will be moved to this forum, and repeated mispostings by a person may result in moderator action. Threads in the Buyer/Seller Advisories forum must be:

  • Factual
  • Unemotional
  • Related only to what actually happened.

Comments about the character or honesty of the person described will be deleted without notice, and repeated negative personal comments will result in moderator actions. Remember, personal attacks and abuse to other site users is not allowed on this forum. Demands for action are also not appropriate anywhere on the Large Format Photography Forum, and will be removed. The LFPF does not provide any mechanism for seeking resolution of an unsatisfactory transaction--resolution must be pursued outside the forum. This sub-forum is for simple reports of outcomes of transactions here and elsewhere. If the transaction occurred elsewhere, then it must involve transactions of products or services relevant to the large-format community.

The Lounge - An area for off-topic (non-LF, but preferably photography-related) discussion and socializing. Topics and discussions of politics and religion are not allowed, here or elsewhere on the forum, and the forum's general behavioral standards apply here, too.

Introductions - An area to introduce yourself to the other forum members.

Groups & Meetings - Information & questions about organized LF groups & unofficial meet-ups.

New Products - Forum for announcements of a commercial nature from approved vendors. Posts are "moderated" - meaning they must be approved before they display on the forum. Once posted, registered users are free to ask questions or discuss the product announcement in a manner consistent with general forum guidelines.

Kickstarter Projects - Kickstarter projects that relate to photography may be announced once, and once only, in the Kickstarter Announcements section. All subsequent discussion of that Kickstarter campaign must be confined to that thread. Projects of no interest to photographers (in the judgement of the moderators) will be removed.

How do I start a new thread?

You can post a new thread by simply going to the LF Forum home page. Find the sub-forum that best fits your question. Be sure to read the forum descriptions.

Click on the sub-forum where you want to add your question. In the thread list click on the "New Thread" button that can be found near the top and bottom of the page. You'll be presented with a standard editing form to enter your question.

How do I display a picture within a message?

For posting pictures:

There are three methods to post pictures.

1. Upload and store the picture on the forum, when creating the message that will display it.
2. Store the picture on your own site or server, reachable by IP address, and then link to it.
3. Store the picture on a third-party picture storage site, such as Flickr and Photobucket, and then link to it. (We do not provide instructions for this method because each hosting service is unique and they change unpredictably. The stuff related to this forum is provided in Method 2.)

Instructions follow:

Method 1. Uploading and Storing the Picture on the Forum.

a. Create and store the picture as a "JPG" or "JPEG" file on your computer, to be no larger than 250K. The forum will resize the longer dimension of your picture 750 pixels if it is larger, so if you size it that way to begin with, you won't suffer resizing errors that the forum software sometimes causes. BMP, GIF, and PNG files are also accepted, but limited to 150K and must fit within a 650-pixel box to avoid resizing. JPEG is preferred.

b. Then, when creating a post, click the picture icon on the icon bar right above the text entry box, which will read "Insert Image" when you mouse over it. That will bring up a Insert Image dialog box that will have two tabs. Click the tab that says "From Computer". Then, click the "Select Files" button at the bottom of that dialog box. That will bring up your operating system's typical file selection dialog. Navigate to the image file you created in Step A above. Click "Open". That will add the file to the file list in the Insert Image dialog box.

c. You may click "Select Files" again to select another image. You may upload as many as four images in any one post.

d. When you have finished selecting images, then click "Upload File(s)". You may also "Clear List" and start over.

e. Add whatever additional text you want to your message, and click "Submit".

The images will be stored on the Large Format Photography Forum server. A thumbnail that fits in a 150-pixel box will be displayed in an image attachments box, and forum readers can click on the thumbnail to open a picture viewer window.

Method 2. Store the Picture on Your Own Site or Server.

If you have server space or your own website, and your picture can be reached from the general internet, then you won't be subject to as many restrictions as when storing the picture on the forum.

a. Create and store the picture as a "JPG" or "JPEG" file. There are no size limitations, but please respect others, and size pictures not to exceed normal viewing screens. And by more normal viewing screens, we don't mean your 1920x1280 wide-screen, but rather my 1280x900 laptop display. Fitting within an 800-pixel box is a useful maximum size.

b. Following the instructions provided by your web hosting service for your site or server space, upload the picture there. It must be stored in a place that allows a direct link to the actual jpg file, which should look like: "http://YourServerURL/YourPictureFile.jpg" For example, a URL to a picture on the site of one of the moderators looks like this "http://www.rickdenney.com/Island/stairs_lores_bw.jpg".

c. Then, when creating a post, click the picture icon on the icon bar right above the text entry box, which will read "Insert Image" when you mouse over it. That will bring up a Insert Image dialog box that will have two tabs. Click the tab that says "From URL". That will provide a single line entry box for a URL. Enter the entire URL, from "http://..." to "...jpg", as shown in Step B, inside that box.

d. UNCHECK the box that says "Retrieve Remote File and Reference Locally". If that box is checked, it will move the picture file to the Large Format Photogaphy Forum server, subject to all the restrictions in Method 1. (For more advanced posters, it is possible to use this method, with the box checked, to include attachments inline in the text of your message, and still store the picture on the forum servers. But they will still be shown as thumbnails.)

e. Click "Okay".

Alternate Steps:

a. Insert image tags directly by adding the following text to your messages:

[img]http://YourServerURL/YourPictureFile.jpg[/img]

Putting the complete URL to the picture inside IMG tags will cause that image to display within your message. This approach works no matter where the image is stored, including on third-party image hosting sites, though you must follow their instructions to determine what the image tag contents should be.

How do I use the Announcements sub-forum?

The Announcements is intended for announcements of conferences, workshops, book releases, gallery openings, and the like. Regular participants may post announcements of these events (one thread per event only, please), and then respond to any questions within that thread. Reviews of the event may also be posted to the thread. If important aspects of the event change, simply post a follow-up response, and the event will cycle back to the top of the recently-modified threads. (One update/month only, please.)

Additionally, an entry for the Calendar may be submitted through the Calendar tab at the top of the forum menu, if appropriate. That entry should be limited to the event name and location.

What are your Privacy Policies?

Who operates the forum?

This forum was started in 1997, by Quang-Tuan Luong, using server, bandwidth, and forum software (Lusenet) provided generously for free by Philip Greenspun to the internet community. Privacy Statement

The Large Format Photography Forum ("the board") requires users to supply their real name, email address and date of birth in order to complete registration.

The date of birth is only used to comply with US Federal COPPA (Child Online Privacy) law.

Your name is used only to identify users if they choose to use another name as their publicly visible user name on the board. The name is accessible only by the board's moderators.

You can choose to hide your age and date of birth in the User control panel settings (see "My Settings" link). We collect and verify your email address so we have a alternative way to communicate with our users.

Your email address is never visible to other users unless you choose to make it visible--the moderators urge you to keep your email address private. We have a Personal Mail system you can use to communicate with other members which does not expose your email address to the recipient.

No user information is or will be shared with third parties without the permission of the user.
