I used to get a similar effect in the darkroom by selectively applying a Softar filter.
Very nicely done, and your subject played along perfectly.

My first real portrait in LF. This is a 3x4 Polaroid (Fuji FP-3000B) that I took with my brand-new Polaroid 900 4x5 conversion with a 135mm Xenotar lens. This is William, a friend of mine graduating with an art degree next semester, and a sculpture he just finished.
He doesn't want his friends to see before the graduating art show so in the very, very slim chance you know him...don't look!
And if you can't figure out what the sculpture is, look at it this way:
