    Re: Nude

    Adams and Mortensen
I remember reading the magazines in which their responses back and forth were printed. The disagreement was a basic one - Adams did not believe in physical manipulation of a negative once it was developed - Mortensen viewed the negative as a canvas on which to add personal art work. Mortensen was a pictorialist only in the fact that his images sometimes depicted scenes from myths and legends.
Mortensen was a Hollywood studio photographer with access to beautiful models and costumes.
Adams was a working photographer whose primary interest was the natural world.
Each was a great photographer in his own right. If one takes the time to carefully read and analyze each of their instructional books they will find the two men used extremely similar approaches to exposure and development. Adams, along with Fred Archer, developed the Zone System, and Mortensen called his approach "The Nine Negatives".
As an aside, the quickest method for determining correct EI and development time for the Zone System in the absence of a densitometer is to use the 9 Negative Test.

That's how styles and approaches can work for the good, even with petzvals.

There must be somewhere a difference between "nude", "naked", and "seeing through"....
(nude women, naked woman, seeing through.. ?
I will make the remark concerning "nude", that many "metaphor" expressions through camera work joins the same kind of energy (libido) and obeys to instinctive modes (scope pulsions...)...
what is interesting for me is the way one frames it, the way it is offered to our potential "viewers" and to have a minimum degree of consciousness of what is being "awaked" in others...

    Miguel,

I agree with your comments and musings and even your use of New courier font. The latter makes your writing more of reportage, as if you are covering an exhibit of the photographs. As for the photograph, it's for sure a nude! I thought it was feminine at first then it switched and has been going back and forth ever since!

The pictures that allow room for our own musing are in a special category where the viewers imagination and intelligence are trusted to complete the image.

    Kudos!

    Asher

    Hello Asher
I've seen lots of first rate image posts from you over the last few months so I'm flattered that you would read my bs and look at my work. It was interesting to shoot Ribbecke's guitars for 20 yrs, and then to arrive at a whole new way of addressing the subject. Hopefully, I can take it further at some point. Beyond that, we should have a beer.

There was a lot of tilt and swing in use, actually. It was taken with a verito, and I was trying to eek out every bit of sharpness I could find to keep the frets and pickguard from completely blurring out.

Your work is always first rate Miguel, and I agree with your comment; which I take to suggest that we all have sexual inclinations, and perhaps its the grace with which they can be manifested that makes for the separation.

    Miguel,

I'm afraid I can't make much of what you've written- it seems a little Freudian to me- but I like your image very much. Thanks for posting.
