    Using a 3047 head for 8x10

Consider getting the 3039 tripod head. It's the upgrade from the 3047. It has a 26lb maximum, is about the same size as the 3047, holds tight, and is very smooth to use. I like mine a lot. You can take a look at www.bogenimaging.us.

In time, the 3047 will get loose to the point that you won't be able to tighten and have it hold.

    Using a 3047 head for 8x10

I use the same set-up, 3047 head with a 2D. My Hex-Plate had the set screws, and I just screwed them into bed. I was then able to get a 2D sliding tripod block, and did the same with it. No problems. If you don't have one, the sliding tripod block, and are able to find one, I would recommend getting it. In addition to being able to better position the camera over the tripod at any bellows extension for balance, I feel it makes the camera more steady.

I think little quick-release plates like the Bogen hex guy are not a great idea of 8x10. In the short term, screwing it down is a good idea. Later you may want to replace the head with something without a quick release plate, or upgrade to something with a larger or custom plate, like the Bogen 3057, or Arca or Really Right Stuff.
