Years ago a friend from farming country in Wales ventured to the coast and walked a bit of the coastal path. The morning he started out he asked a local how to know which way to go, to reach wherever he was off to. The local replied "you see the sea? - keep that on your left". He didn't get as far as he'd planned because of the number of pubs on the route. Some of those pubs have probably closed in the aftermath of Covid.

I'm partial to Dylan Thomas country, and Brecon area but that's a bit of south Wales bias on my part.

It's been many, many years since I last visited Wales unfortunately, but the area around Tal-y-llyn in the south of Snowdonia is beautiful. Lovely countryside and some nice small towns nearby too (Tywyn, Machynlleth, Dolgellau, and Aberdyfi) that are worth visiting if you're in the area.

Years ago, I had a business trip in the UK with meetings ending on a Thursday and reconvening on the following Tuesday. I took the opportunity to drive up to the Lake District and then down the Welsh coast. I "happened" to have my Hasselblad with me Here is one of the results. In the print, if you look carefully, there is a guy in a golf cart with his dog standing there way down on the field below:

Yes, as I recall it was. That drive through the Lake District and then down the Welsh coast is one of the most beautiful I've ever done. Really, really nice landscapes.

The people are lovely too. I was in a pub one day having lunch and people insisted on buying me pints. "You really like Americans a lot, it seems", I said. They guy replies "Well, yes we do, but more importantly, you're not English..."

The Snowdon Mountain Railway is really interesting.

Some people take the steam train to the top of the mountain and walk down.

There are also some fascinating narrow gauge steam railways - if that is your thing in North Wales.

Generally, the trains - old and modern are great ways to see the scenery - if not to photograph it from.

As I'm sure you are aware - Wales is wet and so never venture anywhere without a waterproof coat.

Back in 2005/2006 when I was a half-assed fell runner, I could beat the train going down, and was 5mins short of beating it going up.

Other areas of great interest are the coastal parts of the Lleyn ( aka Llyn ) Peninsular, and Anglesey, where there are beautiful rocky and/or sandy bays with loads of interest for both colour and B&W. I just had a week on the Lleyn in late April with some great conditions ( at times ! )

    Re: Wales in the UK

My wife and I just returned from ten days in Wales and had a wonderful time and perfect weather. Before we left I discovered a Welsh photographer, Pete Davis, on YouTube. I admire his work -- and he's done a lot -- the Tin Sheds and landscapes and even street photography from the seventies in Cardiff -- anyway, because of one of his books we took a day hike up Cader Idris -- a walk for my wife, but more like a stress test for me -- probably my favorite hike ever. I did not take large format -- but imagined Pete traveling up there with his 8x10 and tripod so many times.

Aside from the landscapes, the people we met were some of the friendliest and nicest folks -- very engaging.

    Have a great trip.
