What is it about old cars and rust?
Ran across this neg while searching for another. 4x5 FP-4. I think I shot it around 2000 in Georgia.
Remnant from the 40’s and 50’s of pre interstate highways.
Excellent, Don!
I have a fondness for the design of motels of that era, and have a collection of vintage motel postcards. What town?
This is on TN state highway 25W between Knoxville and Clinton and is close to Claxton. There was another really good one on 25W closer to Knoxville in Powell. I think it’s still ther but not certain. State roads leading out of Knoxville have quite a few of these remnants still standing along with some very cool signs. Most are in disrepair and many are overgrown with rush.
Between Oak Ridge TN and Clinton I ran across an old motel neon sign totally covered in brush. Beside it was a little road so I ventured back in and discovered the cottages that were part of the motel. The were for the most part still standing but Virginia creeper and poison Ivy had pretty much covered them both inside and out. Of course I had to spend an hour or so photographing then. As an added jewel there was a 1960’s International Harvester Scout parked in front of one. And like the structures it was going to be reclaimed by the earth.
I go by the area occasionally and drove back into the area where the motel stood to discover it had been torn down.
Interesting, some of these old 40’s and 50’s motels still operate. I’ll occasionally run across one that been preserved and still takes guests.
Don,
I also have been to the Old Car Museum north of Atlanta. Truly amazing. Some of the images I made there are on my web site, but they are all digital. Some had a nice coating of moss and fungus on the paint mixed with the rust. The cars back in the '30's-60's have a definite personality.
Mike
You really have some stunning images on your site. Excellent work.
I just ran across the museum by accident and unfortunately when I arrived they were closing so I had to shoot through the chain link fence. I never got inside but will go back sometime. It’s just a day trip down and back so I just have to get myself down there.
