I think it would stop printing if it there was an issue. Of course it would stop right in the middle of one of your perfectly calibrated 13x19 prints using the most expensive paper you print on..
I don't know about the P series printers, but my 3800 warns me in the digital display screen on the printer when the maintenance cartridge is about full. Can you just pull it out and look at it?
The only warning I got was that the box was needing to be changed. I changed it for a new one but the panel layout above didn't change. Seems like a very poorly designed layout imho.

I just turned on my P800 to check - the status monitor window shows a partially-filled bar for the maintenance cartridge, suggesting that it's tracking how full it is just as it does with the ink cartridges, though of course the fill state should go in the opposite direction with use. So it should be empty when you put in a new one, though I'm afraid I don't remember whether it changed from full to empty immediately the last time I replaced the cartridge.
