Here's a little shortcut for dressing the edges of the glass for ambrotypes. If you hate dressing sharp glass edges as much as I do you'll like this quick solution.
I had been using a fine sharpening stone but now use a 220 grit wet/dry sandpaper. I place the paper on my work table face up and place the sharp edges of the glass on the paper and gently grind the edges it only takes a couple of seconds per edge and produces a nicer finish than a stone.
Folks, if its not too much trouble, and if you use (or know) B&S Old Workhorse kit - could you please PM me mixing instructions for it?
I got kit from friend who gave up, but he misplaced instructions somewhere, so i went through first batch we mixed like in May (it was wee batch, i did 4 test plates, butchered exposure on first 3, 4th one got weird foggy lines - could be collodion giving up or could be something else, but i certainly cant figure this one out till i mix up new pouring batch).
Also, if you're shooting outside I have found if you are in shade or out of shade but extremely overcast I expose for 3 seconds, I try not to shoot in direct sun but I would say anything over 1 second is over exposed, I develope for about 30 seconds or more..... your fixer being a fresh mix may help if you're getting cloudy results.......hows the silver nitrate bath? I leave my plate in the bath for 3 minutes, might be able to go 2 minutes but I just have good results at 3 so....
I use 3 1/2 minutes in the silver bath. Have done 4 but didn't see any difference.
