    Re: Anybody using WD2H+?

You're probably right about the Benzotriazole in WD2D. There have been a few versions of WD2D over time. I recall John saying the original version contained Benzotriazole but that he later omitted...

Oh ok I see now... :) yes my discussions with Drew might appear quite confrontational - however it's mostly us teasing eachother about long-standing disagreements about certain things so at this...

    Mark,

I’m not turning against the subject and I think it’s a worthwhile investigation. Hopefully you are able to sort out WD2H.

    Re: Anybody using WD2H+?

The working solutions of PMK and WD2H are virtually identical (+/- slop) in their part A composition. The difference is the alkali. If you replace the PMK alkali with carbonate you have WD2H.

    Re: Anybody using WD2H+?

Well, if you use PMK A with a carbonate B it’s essentially WD2H but it’s always worth a try. With the higher alkalinity of carbonate fog and non-imagewise stain would be expected to increase, but I...

    Re: Anybody using WD2H+?

Thanks for clarifying that - that’s good news in that it might simply mean you need to significantly extend development time with WD2H. That would make sense to me relative to WD2D since WD2H is...

It’s interesting you’re saying visually the WD2H negatives are noticeably thinner than the PMK negatives of the same scene. Even if we leave aside the difference in staining, if the silver density is...

Re: Pre-Exposing Adox CMS 20 II

It was musing more than anything else. Panchromatic films don’t have the same sensitivity to all wavelengths (for example there is often a dip in the cyan area) so the speed is basically an average...

    Re: Anybody using WD2H+?

It’s really the concentration of sulfite in the working solution rather than the ratio of sulfite to pyrogallol that affects stain. The difference between 0.2 and 0.3 g/l is small. All other things...

Re: Pre-Exposing Adox CMS 20 II

Maybe they are gas-hypering the film stock? It worked best on slow/fine grain films and special plates for astrophotography, that sort of thing. Or maybe they’re pre-exposing the film only to some...

    Re: Anybody using WD2H+?

For reference, here is a comparison of the contents of working solutions of WD2D, WD2H and PMK. I've excluded the EDTA-Na4 as it is sometimes there, sometimes not. WD2D originally had different...
  12. Re: Your preferred STOP+FIX+Hypo+Wash for FB paper (for toning and drying and flatte

I would say as long as the fixer relatively fresh, and you do a full wash sequence, then repeating a 60s fix afterward is like starting over so the subsequent wash procedure should be as efficient....
  13. Re: Your preferred STOP+FIX+Hypo+Wash for FB paper (for toning and drying and flatte

I’m not sure I understand what you’re asking, Doremus. I wouldn’t change anything you’re doing if it’s working well. I think if people have water conservation concerns it might be easier to do...
  14. Re: Your preferred STOP+FIX+Hypo+Wash for FB paper (for toning and drying and flatte

In the original work at Ilford that led to its archival/optimum permanence sequence it was found 30s fixing in the "film-strength" rapid fixer was sufficient. Since it was also found that extending...

I haven’t used Foma films but I’d be surprised if they have different dimensions than Ilford/Kodak. These things are standardized.

One obvious potential problem I can think of when trying to use an unmodified film developer for paper is chemical fog. Film developers are not formulated to totally suppress fog - this is acceptable...

True. I also should have been clearer - I wasn't referring to your post (or Oren's). It was the rest that read like laughable "artist statements".

I don’t think you will find Lupex to be an inherently blue/cool paper. I suggest trying basically any general purpose/neutral developer first. If on the other hand you prefer a cooler tone you might...
  25. Re: 8x10 shooters, can HP5 come close to Tri-X 320?

Drew, you should get one of those fancy Canon or Nikon digital cameras for when it’s windy. You can shoot at ISO 320,000.

  29. Re: 8x10 shooters, can HP5 come close to Tri-X 320?

Is shrapnel grain sort of like buckshot grain?

I never much cared for Loranc’s stuff. Another guy who gives TXP a lot of exposure is Barnbaum. I’m not a fan of his either though.
  30. Re: 8x10 shooters, can HP5 come close to Tri-X 320?

I’m not much of a sentimentalist - it’s more A. Wyeth’s technique with tempera I admire. Anyway it was just an example of a 20th century painter who chose tempera even though oil superseded it in...
  31. Re: 8x10 shooters, can HP5 come close to Tri-X 320?

No, tempera like what people used before oils, and what some modern masters like Andrew Wyeth used. You should know that.
  32. Re: 8x10 shooters, can HP5 come close to Tri-X 320?

What is watercolour grain? Personally I like egg tempera grain but you have to be careful not to flex the film or else it cracks. And don’t overcook the eggs.

Edit: Never mind I found it in...

  39. Re: 8x10 shooters, can HP5 come close to Tri-X 320?

Drew, back in the day were there any other films that had a TXP-like retouching surface on the base side?
  40. Re: 8x10 shooters, can HP5 come close to Tri-X 320?

TXP is Tri-X 320, which is a very different emulsion than TX (Tri-X 400), and is fairly unique. It was originally designed primarily for low flare, studio/portraiture work. It has a relatively long...
