Alex, I see it has been a while since these posts. I don't come around as often these days. But, since you have the book already with most of the "how-to," just shoot me an email and I will gladly...

Drew, that is super cool about the contractor doing the pics of the employees!!
ghostcount, most of the brasswork is made by me and I go over that and give sizes and thicknesses. For most supplies, I give where or what type of vendor sells them. I do not give a resource...
I recently completed my second book on camera-making. Details and more info can be found here.

Hello, I have been making wet plate cameras for quite a few years. Last year, I published a book on how to make a sliding box camera. The book is aimed at those who are familiar with woodworking...
This is why I designed the 8x10 field plate camera; for BIG lenses. The cameras are specifically designed for shooting plate photography such as wet plate collodion, and daguerreotypes.
The lens is...
Thanks so much for the help. Although, apparently I did not do enough research. I am wanting to rebuild an old graflex 4x5 SLR, and did not realize it possess a shutter within. I have been too...
Louis, that LUC shutter looks interesting. Thanks for the images.
It is a Holmes Booth & Haydens half plate lens and the rear most barrel that extends past the flange is 2.25" outer diameter.
How could/would I rig a small shutter to a brass petzval-style lens for use in a camera with little room to play with inside? No room for a packard.
I've been building cameras for wet plate collodion and dag photography for a few years. I have recently come up with a new design; a modern version of plate camera. It operates and folds like...
P.M.ed.
I've got these in the works. A modern field 8x10 plate camera. Everything beefed up a bit for the large lenses as well as the plates. Large 7" lensboard. These images are just sort of a sneak...
Turner bellows are good, they will not be less expensive; more like double.
To everyone thanks so much for the input from your own experiences with the two tapes.
For Bellows.
Gaffer's tape or Bookbinder's Tape? Which is more permanent?
No, with the ground glass door open, a plateholder fits into that spot. The ground glass door stays open. You won't be able to just "rig" something due to light tightness and the registration or...
Interesting. Metallurgy is something I am slowly learning. Thank you, and yes, it would be just maintaining pressure.
Tracy, yes, I checked to have a mess-load cut via CNC/Waterjet/laser. The quote I received was $6.25 each for 50 and $5 each for 200. I touched base with Keith at K.B. Canham, and figured my own...
I have using been the washer system like on the Wisner Cameras to hold the ground glass in. I just tried to get a quote from a CNC shop to do the spring clips like on Deardorff Cameras, but that...
Thanks all, I got a bit worried after talking with a buddy in CA about his WA lens he uses. My project, though mostly aimed at wet plate and dags will handle 210mm easily. Can handle less by...
Asking distance lens to film surface at infinity or your normal landscape shoot when you go out in the field. Less than 9"(230mm)? 7"(180)?
What is your average minimum (infinity) focal length on an 8x10? I know that some wide angles can get down to 4". But, what is your normal lens measurement?
Thanks
Thanks so much, that is interesting.
In the removable back of the Deardorff, there are cutouts and springs in the wall of the wooden frame. Almost like to install a panel in front of the springback. What are these for?
Nope, an 8x10. And it looks just the same size as the ones they are selling as replacements on their site now.
Ok, thanks, I'll increase that measurement. Bringing to the machinist tomorrow. Could I meet in the middle and do 3/4"? The Deardorff example I have in front of me has a 1/2" post for the 1/4"...
Bottom of camera will be 15" x 14". The flange will be about 5 1/4" diameter. Yes, I imagine the lathe will do the shaping of the flange and extending post that will be then be tapped to 3/8" x 16....
I can't really do both, as the piece will surely be done via a lathe. I reckon I should go with the 3/8" and a bushing to avoid any issues at all. Concept wise, it will be very similar to the base...
Tripod socket size; is having 3/8" a requirement? I'm making a camera and am wondering about doing just 1/4" on camera bottom or should I do the 3/8" since I will be having these done by a machine...
