I have no problem with threads where the discussion gets heated or impassioned or even "boils over." Personal attacks is where I would draw the line, not disagreements about ideology.

Thank you, Pali.

This is why I think it makes more sense to define what is and isn't large format based on camera parameters regardless of imaging material.

Perhaps a sheet film forum, then?

Personally, I'd prefer this place to be a view camera forum, which would include the cameras Paul is talking about but ecxlude DSLRs.
But that dead horse has sailed.

In the "whatever else is out there" category are Cibachrome 8x10 drums. I use them on rotary bases for all my daylight negative developing and they work really well. (They are cheap, too.) The only...

I don't have a steak in this conversation, and I don't want to start a beef with anyone, but this whole thing is udderly ridiculous.

Here is an example from our own pages, using a nylon stocking over the lens:

Thanks. Glad you enjoy it.
For every one like this that I caught in time, there are dozens that I let slip past. The funny thing is, as I was setting up the shot of the theater a guy...
I haven't but I'll check it out. Thanks. And I agree about glass and light, obviously.

I agree. It's hard to know, but it wouldn't surprise me if this was lit with just window light and reflectors. Regardless, it seems both dated and timeless at the same time.
The photo itself...

Funny to see the couple of people who looked up at you as you were taking photos.

Yep, it's a refillable plastic three gallon water jug sitting on a windowsill in our kitchen.

Speaking of art being "good" or not, I've always found this piece refreshing: http://members.tripod.com/karl_p_henning/old/itsgood.html
From the essay:

Downloaded. Thanks.

Iris clamp / universal lens mount. Not having to make/buy lens boards for all those vintage flange-less barrel lenses is a blessing.

I've always found this Steichen image to be visually striking despite--or beacuse of?--the fact that the background is in focus and subject isn't, not to mention the cropped head and torso.

Not sure, but I've been doing it this way for over 35 years.
I've never claimed to be successful, so you may be on to something there.

Why is the "why" important at all? I almost never know why I am taking a picture. If I thought about it too much in advance I would break the spell and talk myself out of clicking the shutter in the...
I've never thought that my photographs were "saying" anything. When I compose a photo, I'm reacting to what's in front of me without a thought in my head. It's a purely intuitive act along the lines...
Consciously, maybe, but your subconscious appears to be dreaming in squares!

From the archives, circa 1986. Nikon F3 and Kodachrome.

I use the "Subscribe to Thread" function for just about all the active image-sharing threads, and the first thing I do after logging in is click on "Settings" which shows only subscribed threads....
Her stare into the camera and her Mona Lisa smile are just perfect. (The composition's not bad, either. ;))

I'm partial to my 6" and 6.5" Cinephor projection Petzvals for 4x5 use, both around f/2.8. One is coated and one isn't. They were dirt cheap, too. Why do I like them? I just like the look, I guess.

I don't know of any online resource that is as comprehensive and concise as what you are asking about. I second Dan's recommendation for the Lens Collector's Vade Mecum. While it is flawed in some...
The talk was great. Very insightful stuff. Austin spoke eloquently about his work. Bonus: I got to meet his mom, and she is a sweetie.

Bump for a good guy and talented photographer. Only two hours until liftoff!

Thanks, although there is a long tradition of this kind of thing. Stieglitz, Strand, Aaron Siskind, Harry Callahan, Minor White, to name a few practitioners. Nothing wrong with wearing your...

If I'm not mistaken, the Caltar "Pro Series" 300mm f/5.6 is a rebranded Schneider Xenar. I have a late copy that has "Made in Germany" on the side and came in a Copal 3. It has a nice, modern coating...
