Giles Clement in the original article has been doing tintypes/ambrotypes for about 10 years now, so is very experienced in the camera functioning part of the operation. He's put his 10000 hours in so...
Not just subtly toned, but also the color/tone/brightness/texture of the paper we print on!
If you want to experiment... used dirty weak paper developers work fine on film... I've done plenty of Xray film in browning dektol or dektol plus some other used developer.
Xray film can be...
Peter Henry Emerson : "No one but a vandal would print a landscape in red, or in cyanotype."
I like a cyanotype once in a while too.
Color printing as most of know it is more easily done well...

I use one of these biathlon slings for my Ries J tripod. I added a ring by the head to clip into, and a ring with velcro to wrap around the feet/leg clamps.
Large format has the unique benefit of about 180 years of different styles of photography. If you like a particular style of photo history, you might want to start with a lens that is compatible with...
I did a timelapse.. (in the link) 500 raw photos with my D810 with the intervalometer set for 10s... Used LR to batch bring up the shadows a little and apply lens correction, and export the Jpegs....
Caffenol seemed to make the grain pronounced when I tried it a decade or so ago with Efke 50 film which should not have grain.
I have some commercial success in marine electronics and IT and don't expect that to be replicated in photography, even if the skill or uniqueness is comparable.
When I sell/do marine...
The longer it takes and the fussier it is to setup the tripod, the better the photo right :-)
It's basically a macro shot.. I bet even a 360mm-450mm lens will be so drawn out it will behave like a longer portrait lens.
If you've got vintage lenses, a soft focus will get you slightly more...
If you scan it as a B&W negative in color mode, you'll see a distinct blue shift that you have to correct out; blue being the negative of tan. It's subtle, but I think it's stronger in the invisible...

Claims a new Adox Helios film will be available in sheet film.
arty ISO 3 ish
Looking forward to the creative potential, (despite having yet...
TF5 is very reusable. A typical empirical method for testing it before re-use is to put a small scrap of film in and when it takes twice as long to clear as when fresh, it's done.
I have a Paramount cord.. If I didn't, I'd probably use insulated small insulated alligator clips or the mini-hook test leads on the posts for something temporary.
I learned from other high school students, outside of any classes.. The school newspaper had a small darkroom at school which was normally locked for safety and I didn't have a key but was allowed to...
How tall you are is largely irrelevant to what is the best height for a camera to be positioned for a photo.
Budget end, but very high quality is the tiltall. I used on for many years with my 4x5...
I'm pretty well set for lenses... Bought most here, some on ebay. I like LF for the variety of lenses available.
Yes, I have the sharp contemporary 90/50/210, but also the smooth triplets, rapid...
If you use a hand coated paper like Jim suggests, please put a sheet of mylar between the paper and negative. Otherwise some chemicals might make their way to the negative if things are not perfectly...
Maybe an older style paper like Lodima (azo subsitute), or Foma fomabrom. If you can find someone to handle retouching, or learn it yourself, that would be a historically accurate part of the process...
The major risk is that the ferrous material in proximity to the magnet would gain some magnetic properties and change the field behaviour (strength/timing/acceleration of the shutter)
.e.g. I have...
For similar $, I'd try the Catlabs or Bergger Pancro film over Arista/Foma.
For lesser $ you could get some X-ray film.
I have in my freezer Xray film and Tmax400. It would be a hard sell now...
I've got a magnetic stirrer.. Much simpler/cheaper than a heated magnetic stirrer. Let's do me other things while chemistry dissolves/mixes like cleaning up and getting bottles ready
Some things...
Owls Head Light state park. Feb 2023 with the Rolleiflex and catlabs 320 film. Just got around to developing/scanning it.

I have switches for white light and red light. When building the darkroom, I put a power outlet on the ceiling for the safelight. (old Kodak box safelight). Since then I've installed a tracklight for...
Above mentioned suggestions are good.
I'd suggest studying the work of the pictorialists such as
Clarence H. White and His World: The Art and Craft of Photography, 1895–1925
Camera Work (by...
Bad discs on either side of L3; no 90 pound packs for me. I could curl it, but not wear it.
To haul 90 pounds of LF gear, I've used my van or an ice fishing sled.
Here's what I've enjoyed with sufficient practice (wasted film and worthwhile images)
Gundlach Hyperion 9"
Verito 7.25"
Kodak 305 on 8x10
Wollaston Meniscus
Magnifying glass with spaghetti...
Focusing technique will vary slightly between lenses. What aperture to use can not be adequately judged on the groundglass. You really have to try some different apertures on different subjects to...
Ticks are serious.. I've seen them year round in Maine.
I also use garlic spray for my yard.
On my clothes / skin I use lemon-eucalyptus oil spray; some insect repellent companies sell it as a deet...
Just an update...
I'm back into the darkroom after recovering from a bad fall and subsequent broken kneecap and surgery this spring..
I ran new and old timers while developing film..
It works...
Yes, she's a tiny bit annoying.. call it character development.... But she gets to visit some neat places nobody else really does.. As a photographer, I like the idea she practices about being super...
I didn't know there were subs on the west coast, but U-boats were pretty common to be seen at night on the coast in New England. They'd come up at night and run their engines to charge their...
PageMaker was awesome....
To flow a whole chapter of text across as many text boxes on as many pages as you want.. Way ahead of it's time and a mature reliable product at the same time. Very nice...
I've used both fixers with fp4+and tmy2, with pyrocat hdc, hd, pmk. Never a problem.
Don't recommend using the same solution for film and paper in case dust/paper fibers end up in the tray, it won't...
For smaller sizes, Frametory on amazon has been excellent for me.
If white wood is OK instead of black, I noticed Ikea has some affordable decent looking frames.
For larger sizes, I'd probably just...
Yes... My Rolleiflex Automat and Speed Graphic Preanniversary. Both bought cheap and I've become very comfortable with them despite supposedly superior available newer models... Like cars, I had a...
That's a great idea. there are plenty of cheap flights during the dark season between Iceland and the US. Probably could pay for it with a couple boxes of Tmax 400 or FP4+ from B&H.
I have too many photos for purely SSD storage at this time.
Rasperry Pi are fun, but it's more practical to buy a pint sized used PC like the Lenovo I referenced for similar money. Unless you need...
