Re: Proper usage of compensating developer?

Thanks for the leads Tim. I found the Unblinking Eye article informative. Proof will be in the pudding. I exposed three sheets last night. Hope to process them tomorrow.

    Proper usage of compensating developer?

I'm about to try my first night shots using 4x5 sheet film-HP5. The scene (a small bridge in the city) will include street lights and will require compensating development to prevent the highlights...

Re: EI for HP5 4x5 sheets

I use a variation of the method described by AA in his book "The Negative." I expose 4 sheets: Zone 1 (iso 400), plus 1/3 (iso 320), plus 2/3 (iso 250), & plus 1 stop (iso 200). I use a large mat...

    EI for HP5 4x5 sheets

I just finished testing the EI for my first box of HP5. Result: box speed. I've only used Tri-X until now (EI=200). Next step is to test for the corresponding development time. Just wondering...

Overmatting with a margin around the print

Inspired by another post on the topic of presentation, I have a related question-more of a survey perhaps. Whether you do your own matting or outsource it, do you prefer to

    mat your prints...

Re: Best tripod head for 4x5 camera?

I don't feel qualified to say that the 410 is the "best," but I enjoy using mine with my Shen-Hao PTB45 (heaviest lens=Fujinon 300T/9) on a Bogen 3021 (Manfrotto 55) without the centre post. Compact...

Re: What are your dark room "luxuries?"

The darkroom itself is a luxury. I use the local, fully-equipped art gallery darkroom: 11 enlarging stations around the outside, two temperature controlled 8' sinks with 360 degree access and...

Re: Negative damage using the Taco method

My 2 cents worth: a homemade slosher. Since that post I've made a slight modification because the glue doesn't hold forever. I cut the "c" pieces a little thicker, drilled holes in the ends and...

    Re: how old are we?

How old are you? Irrelevant question. I'm on the right side of the grass and that is all that matters😜. On the other hand, I'm old enough to enjoy and appreciate a good ol' rock 'n roll song😍....

    Re: Large Format Landscapes

I've been working my way through this thread, thoroughly enjoying the images. I have a couple of questions. First, sometimes I encounter posts where the image is no longer available. There seems...
  11. Re: Greg Hindy, the USA Walker needs a slosher DESIGNED

I made and use one like you seek, but for an 8x10 tray. I cut off two rings from a 1 1/2" dia. ABS black pipe slightly wider than the wall thickness. Smooth the sides, and cut in half to make four...

Re: If you could take just one workshop...

I agree, jp. I look at other's work from as many sources as much as I can. But, I'm always left with two questions: (1) how did the artist achieve that such wonderful results, and (2) can I learn...

I would jump at that chance. Unfortunately, I would have to leave the province for such an opportunity. We have a fine arts program at the local university, but analogue photography is not part of...

    Re: Skiing & LF-ing

I always take a camera when I x-c ski or snowshoe. Most often I take my Nikon F, a 35-105mm zoom and a 24mm. I will take my 4x5 gear when I'm snowshoeing in areas I think or know are ripe for a pic...

    Backpack recommendation for 4x5 kit

Which backpack would you recommend for a 4x5 kit: Shen-Hao PTB45, 3 lenses on lens boards (90, 150, & 300T), spotmeter, compendium, up to 6 film holders, darkcloth, tripod, and a few smaller...
  18. Re: A collection of darkroom tips and tricks that don't need a whole thread to themse

    Re: Should I add a 210mm lens?

    Should I add a 210mm lens?

I have 90mm, 150mm, and 300mm lenses for my Shen-Hao PTB 45 camera. Is there any added value to having a 210mm lens, too?

    Nikkor M 300 or APO-Ronar 300?

I had my mind set on a Nikkor M 300mm/9 to go along with my 90mm & 150mm for 4x5 until I came across an APO-Ronar 300mm/9 for sale for about half the price. Intrigued, I did some research and was...

    Backpack Recommendation

Need a recommendation for a "small" backpack for hiking/biking to carry 4x5 field camera, 3 lenses (90, 150, & 300) on lens boards, 4-6 film holders, spot meter, loupe, dark cloth, filters (52 & 77),...
  25. Re: Any reason not to buy a Manfrotto 808RC-4 for LF?

Bought the Manfrotto 410 and love it. Compact, quick to set up, solid. Price jumped all over the last few months on B&H website. $180 to $200 to $270 and down to $225. Bought one online from...
  26. Re: Which Beseler lens board for Rodagon 135/5.6 enlarging lens?

Thanks jk. I found a pdf of the manual on line. Very helpful.

  27. Which Beseler lens board for Rodagon 135/5.6 enlarging lens?

My enlarger is a Beseler 45 with a 45S diffusion lamp house. It takes the standard Beseler 4x4 lens board. I have been eyeing a Rodenstock Rodagon 135/5.6 lens (39mm thread) for 4x5 negs, but I...

  29. Any reason not to buy a Manfrotto 808RC-4 for LF?

I have a Shen-Hao PB45 (1.4 kg w/o lens) and in desperate need of a tripod head. My budget is $200. The Manfrotto 808RC-4 seems to fit the bill, and the Manfrotto 410 geared head seems popular. ...

Re: What zone for highlights do you like?

I'm with Brad regarding exposing for Zone 2/3. I'll measure important highlights and adjust development to achieve Zone 8. I shoot Tri-X 320 (EI 200) and develop it in D-76 1+1.
