Hello all,
I just made a post to my blog that might be of interest here. O'Sullivan's King Survey photos were published in the official report of the expedition nearly decade after they got back....
Oh hey,
I stopped getting e-mails from this thread, thought it was dormant!
Yes, I did put up another post on Ansel--actually two.
The first is "Was Ansel A Landsape Photographer?" at...
And speaking of...
Just posted a follow-up post with the semi-clickbait title "Was Ansel Adams A Landscape Photographer?"
I was going to make it a list, which are so popular on Google....
Cool--thanks! I've got a few more Ansel posts coming, stay tuned...

Indeed, it was the Lane show that got her interested in Ansel's early work as a PhD topic. She talks about that in her intro to the book.
And thanks for the link to her dissertation--I hadn't...
She did her PhD dissertation on Ansel's early work--I think this book is the culmination of all of that. Bad timing with the virus, alas.
--Darin
And by the way, Vaughn, thanks for the tip. I didn't realize they had a copy of Parmelian Prints....
--Darin
Don't forget poor George Grant!
From my review:
The second image is a view of El Capitan. It's not the first time the view had been photographed. I first saw this view as a child helping my...
Would love to see them in person now that I've read the book. That show comes to Portland next year--still quite a ways from here. C'mon vaccine... :)
--Darin
Yep, glad I could help. :)
The book is good. If you haven't seen Parmelian Prints or the Sierra Club album before that alone is probably worth the $35.

I haven't logged in for a long time but I just posted to my blog a review of the new Ansel Adams book, "Making a Photographer: The Early Work of Ansel Adams." It's written by Rebecca Senf, the Chief...
Can anyone tell me about Fournier and the Dorotype? I see that he was an author in Camera Craft in the very early 1900s but not much else.
The Dorotype seems to be an image-on-copper process....
Whatever Feit Lightening model Costco was carrying a few years ago. I do remember that they upgraded to CRI to the mid-90s just after I bought mine! But I then upgraded my entire house last year with...
I went through this a few years ago, thinking I would pick the "correct" color quality and color temperature and all of that. It ended up being a bit of a labyrinth with no clear answers and no...
Just stopping by to order QTs book as a gift....
Fantasia of Color in Early Cinema
Any Sugimoto book--I think one or two came out this year
The Meadow
Light of Coincidence
Just back from the Medium Festival in San Diego. Bottom line on this question: Keynote actually would work well enough and, as it turns out, I didn't need to use the iPad after all, the actual prints...
I just posted this over at DPReview--thought I'd be smart to ask here as well...
I need an iPad app to display my work similar to a portfolio.
I imagined there would be a list of great apps...
Sad to see them go--I tried to give them some of my business but no luck. Sometimes it was just outright weirdness (salespeople insisting that the reason B&H et al can sell so cheaply is that all of...
The Zeiss 0.7? How did he acquire it? Who bought it? How much?

Many of the prints I see of Edwards (all over the country) also seem quite dark, specially in the typical dim museum lighting. We've talked about this before but my theory is that Edward viewed them...
Thanks for all the help so far. I did make a little progress on my own. In the 1958 documentary on Ansel they do briefly show his typewriter. It is an IBM Model 11C (I think). A partial picture...
Any idea if it was a Selectric I or a later model? Color? Any pictures of it?
--Darin
Ahhh, outstanding. Found a smaller image of it on Google. Do you know here I might find a large image? I can identify the typewriter from the Google image but I'd love to be able to read the text.......
An odd question, I know, but I figure this board is just the place to find people who would know.
I'm looking for the model of typewriter that Ansel used. At any time in his life would be fine...
Outstanding forumulation, Neil. That looks about perfect (not to mention nice and simple).
If I might make a small addition (or rather subtraction) I would rephrase your guideline simply as...
That goal seems to grow more and more distant--it appears Richard has been banned by the moderators from posting here.
Seem Orwellian to me.
--Darin
Very odd that gun threads--which really weren't about photographs at all--are allowed (pretending that they aren't extremely political) but a thread on Richard's project--which is most definitely a...
I'm still leaning toward the Kodiak. One major concern is the canvas material. It needs to dry out before being put away to avoid mildew/mold but I live in a foggy, coastal area. I can easily seeing...
Thanks for all the links. Sent me in the right directions, I think.
From what I've seen so far this one catches my eye the most.

I'm kicking around the idea of buying a large tent. I'm not looking for a backpacking tent or anything back-packable but something I might have set up for a week or two near where I park the car,...
Exactly. Consider newbie questions an opportunity to further the long term goals of the LF community, to bring in (slowly) new blood and young people. If you go around saying "do a search" or even...
Deep down on this forum *and on others) this is the very schism that we encounter again and again. Some people see the forum as a database of technical knowledge, assembled and kept current by users....
Well, just drove by there (twice) a week or two ago. Oh well.
If you are not a Brett Weston fan and you are in the area you still might want to take a look. I wasn't keen on his work but I...
And might be complicated by what the definition of "active member" might be....
I googled and "active member" is what you'd expect--how many members visited the board (while logged in) within a...
Looked again, my numbers are (mostly) fine.
As you reported for active members:
June 2008 - 2234
Jan 2010 - 2814
Dec 2010 - 3012
Dec 2012 - 2788
April 2016 - 3209
But the growth has slowed, even as use of the Internet has vastly expanded (though film sales have drastically declined--which offsets which?).
The numbers you are posting can be misinterpreted...
I'm having trouble finding a color wheel/color picker that meets my needs. Anyone know of anything?
I need something like the Mac Color picker, that is, a circular representation with hue (angle)...
Another vote for the Pentax Digital. Here's what people are talking about with the sticker. You can make it at home. People use Roman numerals but you can better imagine it as little patches of gray,...
Just wanted to point out that the guy in the photo (above post) is Robert Langham himself, if you didn't catch that, as photographed by reviewer Elizabeth Avedon. She wrote several vignettes (see...
Who is this guy?
