Well, I don't know if it was "practical". It did involve lugging two backpacks and 40lbs of gear a mile into the woods. :)
I didn't use any filters, just shot wide open with the Fujinon-L 300mm f/5.6 lens. Film was Arista Ultra EDU 100 processed in Rodinal 1:50 in a rotary drum for 7 1/2 minutes. Exposure was 1/15 at...
Thanks guys! We ran across the location on a Mother's day hike with the family and I just had to come back later that afternoon with the 8x10. :)
Something from this past weekend...

Yes, lenses with internal focusing that are free from focus breathing solve that problem. It's the bellow style or true extension style macro lenses that are more difficult.
Focusing with the...
Yes, another term for it is "focus breathing". Filmmakers complain about it, since the field of view of their shot changes as they pull focus. Some complicated lenses with internal focusing can avoid...
+1
This is a significant issue for shooting close up portraits, even with 4x5 but especially with 8x10. When you focus close, you extend the bellows. When your bellows extend, the field of view...
There might be a couple details missing from how I shot it, but I think I followed the rules. :)

I like this Isaac.
It's a 10x20' painted muslin background. I think I got it off ebay years ago.
Thanks! No tilt, and yes I had a heck of a time getting them all to stay in the plane of focus. It took many promises and bribes. :)
Exposed two frames of the kids the other night, luckily both turned out. We went for a fun shot and a serious shot.

The big thing with 8x10 portraiture is that as you approach head and shoulders portraiture you are starting to approach what would be considered "macro" photography with other formats, ie. you are...
Thanks Peter. It's just a single softbox camera left.
He asked me for a portrait, I think he was stalling to stay up past his bedtime.

I emailed Keith in February and he had a couple boxes of 8x10 Tri-X 400 in stock, 10 sheets for $91 plus shipping.
Too rich for my blood, I'm shooting Arista EDU Ultra at just over $2/sheet.
Thanks guys!

What is a "normal" focal length will depend on what you intend on shooting, primarily the degree of magnification needed. If you're shooting at infinity then 800mm will give you a normal field of...
....and thank goodness for the ignore button. Life is too short to waste on people who have nothing to offer but argumentative and unhelpful posts.
LOL... too funny.
There's two approaches to this type of problem... panic and insist that only the most secure and tried and true methods will work. Buy brand new cameras, replace any gear that...
One option I've used multiple times with success is the "puffy paint" or 3D fabric paint that can be used to draw on T-shirts to make decorative designs. Just one bottle of the stuff has lasted me...
Thanks Wayne.
I believe the issue that you run into is that the mirror box of the Canon will start to shade the image as you shift, limiting your ability to capture the whole image circle of the lens.

My first crack at shooting a tight 8x10 portrait... and I was ambitious enough to try it on our 3 year old. Thankfully she held still enough for me to get focus. :)

He is a genius with the Rubiks cube too... his record time solving it is just 19 seconds. :)
