Enough said. Please move along. Onwards with the... nudes !
If not critique, then what's the point of showing photographs here? I guess I need to remember to accompany everything I post with "please critique mercilessly and copiously."

    Re: Nude

Maybe there should be a stand-alone "Photos for Critique" thread, open to any subject matter, where those who want to give and/or receive feedback can go to town.

EDIT: Although, moderating such a thread could be a real nightmare.

Some people add something like "critique and comments welcome".

I think encouraging people to go for the throat, so to speak, may be more beneficial. After getting used to real criticism in school (one prof didn't allow us to say something nice until we had said something negative about the work first), I sometimes crave some real critique that pushes me to improve.

    Well well well

I must point out as I did before
That it is only a sketch so to speak
    An Idea only

    A mere concept

But unlike many I went out and did it.

It is not any good really technically
I had so many things to deal with on the day
    Hanging the model in position
That I rushed the exposure and over exposed
It was being the first one an experiment

It is also only my second nude shoot.

I apreaciate Ash taking the time to get his freak on over my work
I agree with much of what you say
But you do not know who I am not what I do
So your conclusions are based on this forum and photos

I think it is common knowledge that I am a learning photographer
And had only shot 4-5 rolls of film in my life before picking up an 108
And I have only been getting results the last few months
    So really early stages.
But as for your bull dust about Art theory
I have been painting my whole life and have worked in different mediums
Can play a range of instruments have written and performed in plays
And bands and blah blah blah
So basically I'm not into competition
But you really don't know me
And whilst what you say may be true from your point of view
It is by no means the whole story
And I am not trying to shock and awe
I am just doing what I do

    Happy new year

I think the hard part for most people will be figuring out who is worthy of offering a valid critique and who is not. Anything beyond saying "I like it" gets into the murky waters of how valid that person's opinion is.

What is more damaging? A negative critique from someone not qualified to critique, or a positive critique form someone not qualified to critique?

If you want harsh critique, just ask for it. I'm sure there are members who will be more than willing to provide it. "Operators are standing by", as they say.

    Re: Nude

I spent a good number of years wearing a Marine uniform. One of the leadership principles for dealing with subordinates was "Praise in public; castigate in private." I got my rear end chewed out a number of times (and usually for good cause), but it was done in private. Each time was a learning experience for me. Straightforward critiques of what I had done (or not done) taught me a lot. From those experiences, I would recommend using this forum's PM feature to give hard, in-depth critiques of the work of people who are striving to improve.

Of course, a harsh critique can be delivered in a soft manner. For example, when I show a new print to my wife and her immediate response is "Uh-h-h," I know the print or the composition is a real dog. My next step is then to find out if re-printing will help or if I ought to just toss it and move on.

Actually, your 2nd image (#1747) was quite good. It could certainly stand on it's own as a still life, without any artist statement. Please don't let anyone's comments, mine included, influence your decision to continue working on your concept.

    Re: Nude

Its best to keep it public (on a forum that is rather than a workplace). I dont know if you have ever been harrased by PM, but its a lot worse than being harrassed in public. At least you have just recourse in public. Think of it as a family debate around the dinner table as opposed to a dressing down by the boss.
