Yeah, October about when the next model year would be coming out I'd think. If I would have noticed that sooner, I would have asked if he was the original owner.

Love old iron

There are a few youtube posters that show "will it start videos (https://www.google.com/search?q=will+it+start+videos&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS850US850&oq=will+it+start+videos&aqs=chrome..69i57&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8)" about starting them as they sit, some even drive out!

I once got a 60's car to 'make it go', I was a mechanic in a full shop. Got it going after at least 20 years, but first I drained all the old gas and put it in my VW Bus, which ran fine on it....

Thanks Jim, and you're right about the Blue Heron! I took a picture of the whole bus as well, but I like the detail better. I wonder about the history of this bus. From the license plate, it looks like after the UK, it served a stint in Idaho before finally being put to pasture in Tillamook.

Wonderful.

Dodge, Oregon
That poor thing looks like it was hidden under blackberry vines and dug out. Growing up, our neighbors had an identical one, a 1946, and before that my dad had a 1948 Dodge coupe. We remember how soft and squishy the seats were. He paid $175 bucks for it. A lot of money in 1961. Original mohair was perfect, but of course, it was only 13 years old then and I was just 9. Wood grain dash, and lots of chrome on the dash. Radio was vertical in the dash and worked just fine. Fluid Drive. Mush.

So many good parts on it

1981 I bought a 1946 Dodge pickup in Chicago, had it towed to Kenosha, total $125, onto my brother's 4 acre backyard. He was restoring the same model. Nobody was home and I wasn't there.

His wife went a bit off, but loved it when the restoration was complete. Next door to their home was an excellent body shop.

A friend now has it, OE engine with highway rear axle, better brakes, stock looking.

He really needed the glass and hood...

Just looking at the front wheel, I'd guess it's an XJS from around 1990.

Two views of a 1970 American LaFrance Cab Forward Fire Truck, along with a story:

This truck was displayed as part of our local JayCee's annual Christmas Tree Sale, and while I walked past it daily, I wasn't particularly attracted photographically. But a few days ago it wasn't raining, it was above freezing, and I decided that I might as well "give it a shot." Really 3 reasons: it would give me some 4x5 practice (about 1 month since last used), the Forum has a suitable thread, and it had an interesting problem, the busy background (such as the power pylon growing out of the truck). I figured the only thing I could do about the background was to shoot wide open (f5.6) and hope it would be suitable out of focus (didn't really work).

I made the side view first (2 exposures), then moved the camera for the 3/4 view. At which point I started cursing, I saw that on my Canham DLC the removable bellows had half-way removed itself from the front standard and both exposures would be light leaks. So I grabbed my allen keys, re-positioned the bellows, retightened the offending screws, and took the next two exposures. (I suspect flying back from Texas with the camera after the holidays, the vibration loosened things.) Then went back and re-took the side views.

Anyway, here are quick scans from my 8x10 RC work prints, HP5+, Pyrocat-HD, 150/5.6 Rodenstock. I played very slightly with contrast (no burns or dodges) in the scan, which I think is why the truck is darker in one image than the other. I cropped portions of foreground and sky which added nothing to the image.

Cool shot. Always puzzled me that Ford went to the trouble to re-vamp the pickup and truck bodies to incorporate the nice looking wrap around window and then started over the next year in '57 with a body I didn't find nearly as handsome.

Yeah, I shot this on Ortho Litho 4x5 film on a Wista. Developed the film in paper developer. Then made a 8x10 print and toned it with Foma's sepia toner. It's interesting, this looks like some kind of digital filter but the print really looks like this. I just scanned it and adjusted the curves a little in Rawtherapee because my cheap scanner doesn't have great contrast.

Haha, thanks Andrew. I was surprised how this photo turned out, when I was enlarging my first thought there was some dirt on the negative on the door, then was very pleased to see that interesting pattern. Behind the mirror is a very mischievous small bit of fractured glass as well.

The rendering reminds me of something from a gritty comic book, and I definitely didn't realize it would come out like this. I am pleased to get such a result from a totally analog process.

The local car club had a little cruise-in for New Year's Eve, which was an opportunity to photograph some of their cars in the unique lighting of the Christmas lights downtown at night.

This Jeep Wagoneer was extra shiny and reflective. I used a bit of tilt to accentuate the background Christmas lights and reduce the DOF even more than normal.

Bryan...I'm going to sound like a broken record - and, once more, say how great this is! I love the dreamy quality of the lights, and how the upper cabin of the Jeep seems to almost dissolve into this.

Its also very refreshing, while admitting that I am pretty much a "stick in the mud" these days in terms of trying anything new and different - that you are (or at least seem to be) continually exploring the medium, while also, and often, "hitting it out of the park." Keep it up!

Thank you. I've recently printed this image as a 30x40 - and it looks great at that size. Also...I've toned down the foreground shadow area just a tad (looks a bit unreal and over-manipulated in my posted image I think).

At any rate...the "large" version now resides at the Stanhope and Spencer Gallery in Rockland, Maine (342 Main St. - right next to the Farnsworth Museum) - but I hope that someday someone with a bit of wall space will take it home!

It’s a great shot, John. These big prints you speak of — are they darkroom prints or digital?

John Layton
4-Jan-2021, 17:22
Thanks Ben. And all darkroom - through and through. Just a few days ago I posted, in the Darkroom/Processing section, a detailed thread about my large print process, with some photographs of some of the equipment I've designed/build for this - its about fifteen places down the "Queue" in that section. Lots of work, more than a little bit nerve-wracking/nail-biting at times...but well worth the effort!

I mean it doesn't really matter to me either way, I just figured it was what I was told it was. But! I remembered my wife had taken a pic, so I checked...and I made a mistake! There was a Shelby Cobra right next to a Thunderbird, and I didn't realize when I sat on the ground experimenting with compositions on the front end that I had moved over to the T-Bird. My bad.

Very interesting photograph. The gal riding in the sidecar and the hat tied on must have been a legitimate free spirit for the day because that would be a wild ride even if she was able to commandeer a pair of riding goggles that the other riders felt necessary. Roads back in those days were not exactly graded or maintained.

Got this one this past weekend at a poker run in Virginia. Still a beginner with 4x5 so I've been practicing with the Intrepid to try and get the basics down.

I like the angle. Did you use a timer? I see the camera/tripod and what looks like two people standing away from the camera.

rrunnertexas

Well, sort of a timer - a squeeze bulb with a longer tube and I backed away as far as I could. The people just happened to walk into the area.

That looks like a md-1980s Toyota Corolla wagon- a useful appliance on wheels. Most of them were worked to death (it took a while) and few remain today. Much like that poor '40s Nash(?) in Gary Beasley's photo, trapped forever as it slowly returns to the earth.
