JP, my wife's family is from Liberty, ME, and we go to the Owl's Head museum every summer. Wonderful place.
Here's a Hardley-Davidson at the Old Kingsbury Aerodrome in Kingsbury, TX. I kinda wish I'd opened up the aperture a bit for a little shallower focus.

I like to visit Liberty; used to have to do that regularly for work.
Lots of possibilities in that scene Mike! I'd some wagon wheel + rusty wall abstracts, maybe by them self and as a background to the American flag. I bet that's an interesting place.
I have a thing for original Harleys at the moment (thanks to the Discovery Channel's "Harley and The Davidsons" - excellent dramatisation of the foundings of the company), so, of course this one is going to appeal to me!
I agree with your own evaluation of your photo. It would be nice with a shallow DOF, as the bike is getting lost in the background. I'd still be happy if that photo was mine, though.

http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/oldcarcity-6206ss.jpgBravo ! like it a lot , Will be interested in your reply to Rob , hand held 5x4 so perfectly focused , you get the extra brownie points from me for that , The more i look at that tail light image the more i like it , Hand held or not
Thanks Rob and Gary. No, not handheld here - I definitely prefer to shoot on a tripod for non-moving subjects like this so I can compose more thoughtfully on the GG. I do have a cam cut for the 150mm Xenotar as well as a few other lenses and have shot it handheld many times. The Technika is a joy to use this way along with the Linhof finder but I generally compose a bit sloppy and crop to taste later. It's just hard to be precise with a split rangefinder/viewfinder, not to mention the camera and big Xenotar hanging off the grip feels a bit like shooting with a watermelon on a stick.
The Xenotar though has very nice out of focus rendering (see the tail fin image) but is also very sharp when stopped a couple stops down. Which of course is still f/5.6!

Really enjoying these car photos Bryan. The red one you just posted is my favorite!
Pali
Thanks Pali! I love the color red. Back when my parents gave me my first car, a decade-old Toyota Camry hand-me-down with sun-baked paint flaking off, I wanted to get it repainted blood red. They said "no" because of supposed higher insurance costs on red cars. I eventually got it repainted blue but always wanted that red...so I always like fire-engine red cars :).
I also shot a sheet of Velvia 50 of that car - very, very saturated! It's hanging to dry now.
Bryan, here is my funny story that goes with yours. So growing up, I too wanted a red car and managed to get a Red Mitsubishi (lancer I believe) in high school and crashed it within its first year. I later crashed my sisters red car so I for one quite understand the higher insurance on red cars. I am sorry for being part of the statistics that made your parents keep you from getting a red car.
Pali
Oh no! Well it was for the best - I crashed that Camry my first year in college while driving through Atlanta anyway :o.
I was only briefly enthralled by cars, sporty cars that is. I wanted a Mitsubishi GTO and actually test drove one when I was looking to replace that Camry...or tried to test drive it anyway. I discovered I was too tall to really drive it (knees jammed into the steering wheel as I am 6 foot tall with longer legs) so that wasn't going to happen. Never was really into cars after that. I'm on my 3rd Camry now - boring but effective!
Bryan, you might enjoy old man sports cars or touring cars. More room for people like you and me. They can be inexpensive used too. You have too much hair for a bmw but thats the idea. I used to be into Saabs but now its Jaguar. If you prefer Japanese the 350z is cozy but has good legroom.
Now now, don't get me interested in another money-sucking hobby .
So I shot that red car with a sheet of Fuji 160S and also Velvia 50. Was interested to see the difference. Totally unscientific as this film is all expired Quickloads but here is a side-by-side to see the differences in color as edited:

My town's fire department rolled out their No. 1 engine for me to photograph. It's a modified 1919 Model T Ford which they bought new (raised the money by holding dances and raffles) and have owned ever since.
I took several photos, color, B&W, etc for our town's history which is being updated for the 250th anniversary in 2019. This truck doesn't get rolled out often *at all* (been maybe 20 years since the last time?), so it was a rare opportunity.
I was happy to see I nailed the exposure (I made some careful guessing).

Velvia and RED, now there's a match made in photo heaven. Tell your fire guys to fix that leaky radiator and use that thing. It needs to be seen a half dozen times a year. I'll bet there are some old car gearheads in town that would love to help. Very cute piece.

Probably a Cummins. It'll be fun to put a Cummins bus engine in a pickup.
Reinhold, its funny how the brain works - now that you inverted the image, I hardly recognize it after seeing it the other way. I mean, it looks like the same bus but shown from a different angle.

The correctly-oriented version of the bus image immediately struck me as being more dynamic. It took me a while to realize it was because I read from left to right. In the correct version, I saw hood off, engine gone, tires gone--and that took me to the back of the bus where the line of the road took my eyes off into the distance. The correctly-oriented version, to me, tells the more vivid story.

Lovely photo and the detail is fantastic. Yes, an early (1915 or earlier) Ford Model T. My only complaint is not with you, but the car builder. Why would you leave the ghastly plywood grain showing at the cowl. Little things people do that don't make sense. You have to be a car guy to fuss I guess. Great job Mike.

Well, you got me there! They did have the wheel, but not a Model T.
If I remember correctly, National Geographic had an article about King Tut. One of the pieces of furniture was made up with multiple plies of wood, where the grain was at 90 degree orientation. Just like plywood. The speculation was that they were trying to prevent warping of the flat surfaces. That is all that I can remember. Looks like I was a bit off in the time frame. Should be c. 1341 B.C.E. to c. 1323 B.C.E.

Not my typical photo, but I wanted to give this lens a whirl on 8x10. This is my 8 3/4 inch Verito, stuck on my Wehman 8x10. I was curious to see the results. The lens is a bit long for me on 4x5, but a moderate wide on 8x10. It shouldn't "cover" but hey surprise it does, more or less (no debates on lp/mm in the corners, please, for obvious reasons).

Interesting because my earlier version 9" which is physically longer, more proportioned like a petzval really does NOT cover the 8X10 or even full plate. Nice shot.
Thanks Jim. Hmm, now that's a mystery. Does your 9" vignette on 8x10 (black corners I mean)?
This old thread hotly debated the coverage of the 9":
http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?93563-Verito-9-inch-Diffused-Focus-F4
Obviously in the image above, the corners are getting swirly and extremely distorted. I would never argue this covers 8x10 properly. But it could be interesting to use.
Was there any kind of design changes in the Verito? I don't know much about the history.
Jim Galli
24-May-2018, 09:32
The early lenses were in longer barrels it seems to me. That would cut into coverage. And since the front lens is just a modifier I guess it wouldn't change much to move it around. I'll check that lens later today. I remember a month or so ago being sort of dis-appointed it didn't cover full plate. But I'll walk out and double check.
Thanks Jim. Hmm, now that's a mystery. Does your 9" vignette on 8x10 (black corners I mean)?

Lens coverage is evaluated at infinity focus.
Your truck photo (which I like) is obviously much closer, so larger image circle.
- Leigh
Before I went out and took the photo, I did look at the lens on the 8x10 GG focused at infinity, to see if it was even worth it to try - and it does illuminate the corners even then. I thought it was going to be vignetted to black. Image quality of course is a different story and I think that Wollensak's suggested format for the 8 3/4 being 5x7 is probably the limit where the lens doesn't have swirly stuff and excessive distortion in the image. But it does throw an image onto the glass/film and I think especially with a SF or special effect lens such as the Verito one can decide to use the lens as such if they want that effect. Next thing to try is just the rear element which is a 14" lens, on my 8x20...
I would love a true moderate-wide (around 120mm in 4x5 or 240mm in 8x10) with a nice SF effect but no swirly aberrations like seen in the corners above. But I don't know of any. There's only a few SF lenses I've seen that I really like the results of and unfortunately most of them are way outside my ability to buy. I do like swirly corners sometimes but I find it restricts compositions so as not to impact the main subject(s).
Thanks.
Just like the images. Keep up the good work. Thanks in advance.

Nice work. Do you coat your plates by pouring?
Yes, I pour my plates with the waiter tray method. Same for development.
Great looking "A"! Nice to have another Model A guy around here.
Thanks! This one belonged to my grandpa, who left it to me when he passed last year. I've done some work to make it more reliable, and now I'm driving it quite a bit.

One of my first images with the Deardorff V8 and also one of my fist self developed images (of course in contact print).
This is one of the only 6 left Ford cars produced in Germany of this model as the owner told me.
Forgot the name but will ask for it again.
Still learning but so happy about the first results :-)

Ben Calwell, That's a good photo of a '58 Studebaker, a rare vehicle; there aren't many left of the few that were made. (For '59 they introduced the compact Lark, which kept the company alive for five or six more years.)

Thanks. The quarry owner went to a lot of trouble to pose these relics. I hope to get more processed in a couple of weeks.
I'm not that much of a car guy, but when visiting the New York State Fair last month, I was struck by the design of this 1946 State Police car and figured that I'd give it a try. The odd angle and cropping was a result of trying to avoid the rope barrier that closely surrounded the thing. With State Troopers everywhere, I figured that trespassing might not be in my best interests.

While switching to infrared film the owner stopped to chat. That took long enough that the windshield glare became a real problem. I had move to full frontal to take this one on Kodak High Speed Infrared (exp. 1991). The film has a fog of n.d. = 0.2 but still has enough dynamic range to handle this "rust and dirt" scene. Scanned from an Ilford print.

Again from the Idaho stone quarry, here's the truck that really got me excited. It's from neighboring Heron, MT and poses on top of a 40' pedestal of small rocks. For this exposure I shot from the base with a 360mm lens on Rollei infrared 4x5 film. By that time in the afternoon I had been in this 99 degree quarry for 6 hours and could barely stagger around; I consider myself lucky to get this. This is scanned from an Ilford print (Please disregard some smears in the sky that are from smears internal to my scanner.)

A house in the background isn't a problem if you first light it on fire. Give your firetruck pic a bit of drama.
Kidding of course, it's a fine shot.

Reinhold -- great shot. Just curious; when you're out and about photographing, do you seek permission before you venture onto private property, or do you just forge ahead and take the photos?
I ask this, because over the years, I've passed up more nice photo opportunities simply because I was reluctant to go on someone's property. If I see someone out, I'll ask, but I generally lack the courage to just start setting up my tripod and camera.
What's the old saying: It's better to act and seek forgiveness afterwards than to pass up a shot because the photographer was too chicken to get out of his car.

Ben:
If the gate's closed, keep out. If it's open, proceed with caution (you're still trespassing).
If you get caught, hand them your business card (be "up front", act civilly, be friendly (if possible).
Show interest in the history of the place (was it Grampa's, how long ago, etc.??).
I've had some that opened up with their story (after an initial stern, grumpy session).
Be aware that today's social climate has changed, suspicion is justified.
Take off your sunglasses, shake hands (if possible) when leaving.
You may have just made a friend...

Steven,
Yes, it is a beautiful car and I love to drive it. The original 4 speed with Hurst gear shift is so nice to row through the gears with. The bright red color shows it off so much with all this B&W photography!
So true. Nothing like an all American Muscle Car. Those were the days.

Thanks! The window was angled so that it reflected the snow on the street behind me. I made about ten medium format versions before deciding I needed to go back to my car and retrieve the big camera. I guess that says something about how excited I was to find this, ha.

A lovely smooth/sharp picture from a lens I would not have guessed if it was multiple choice.

I have an ambivalent relationship with images of old cars & trucks. On one hand I think they are often pictures we "take" of old vehicles, rather than images we "make" which reflect something about ourselves. On the other hand, they are irresistible for view camera users, since they sit still and let us do our thing. This is an old Chevrolet/Hobart generator truck parked pretty permanently next to two old barns in Madison NJ. They are scans from Pyrocat/HP5+ negatives. Given my mixed feelings, there is a good chance that these will never advance past the scanning stage, although I find the rear view of the truck the most interesting, the other views are simply documentation.

Machines like that are why we won WWII and why we enjoy freedom this day. To some they are just old machines. To others they represent a work ethic that is thin on the ground these days. It's a welding rig.

Love old cars.
Thanks Randy. Here's one more shot from yesterday. Had to rush it as the owner was packing up to leave. Was emphasizing the greyhound on the front. Perhaps could've worked the tilt to bring the whole grill in focus. Next time. They packed it in an hour early because it was a real scorcher, so didn't have as much time as I had hoped.

There were maybe 300 cars in the car show that included this Model A. I did a poor job of cloning out some of a post-war monstrosity behind the classic, and laid in a concrete block wall to cover the rest. The camera was what was handy, a 8mp Canon Power Shot A-590.

First trial pictura with a quite battered and old Blair Folding Hawk-eye 5x7 (made c. 1892-1894!!), with a Bausch&Lomb Iris shutter. I have problems in attaching this camera to a tripod, so I have to use a chair, and the shutter is not reliable at all at nothing more than T mode. The rearside structure of the camera is flimsy, so there's potential for large light leaks. I hope to repair it as best as I could, retaining as much as possible of the original elements.
The car is a 80's Alfa Romeo GTV.
