If someone would PM me, I'll upload some shots of a '53 Jag from some 4X5 negs I shot this week. I can't seem to get the hang of uploading images here.

'41 Chevy fully restored except for paint. Flagstaff, AZ. It took the owner about 20 years with the last part taking almost 10 years to find. That was the grill which he finally found in Argentina in 2008.

These shots were taken last Tuesday at a showroom for a company that restores vintage
British, German and Italian cars. The whole showroom was full of primo classics with little room to move around. Sort of impromptu shoot with 4X5 to test the waters. I'll have shots of an Allard MK11 soon to show, this was a '53 Jag.

When I was 18 years old my grandparents who I was living with went on an extended trip to Mexico with lifelong friends who left a black 1953 Jaguar 120 Drophead in the garage with instructions to start the engine once a week.

Can you imagine anything more foolish :D:D

I had grown up (such as that can be defined at 18) around Model A Fords, so non-sychromesh transmissions were not a problem. My memory is that the Jag had lush long gears with a motor that loved being revved. Still music in my ears 40 years later. We lived in a canyon with a 2 lane curvy road. I didn't act foolishly, but I did make it sing........just a little.

Hmmm. I wonder now but will never know, did Mr. Keller write his mileage down before he left as a reference? And if he did was there wagering involved? The Jag was ready to go when they all returned home.

Jim, I frequent your site to check out whats new in the old car post. Once a gear head, always a gear head. I also think it's a generational thing, we grew up with cars from the 40s', 50's, and 60's. It seem that they stopped making anything classy from the 70's on. When we were kids we played on an old motorcycle leaning against the fence of a neighbors house. It had a leather belt drive to the rear wheel, two cylinders, and looked like an overgrown bike with a long gas tank. Wonder what it was. In any case, motorcycles have been a part of our lives ever since. I currently drive a sidecar rig and use it often to go on shoots. The sidecar is great for gear, and I can get off the road and into places easier than I can with my F-150. Keep em coming, Jim.

Beautiful, beautiful colors, Jim! May I ask what film you used?

The film was either E100VS or Velvia 50. I will often take two pieces of film on the same shot just to see the difference between the two emulsions. Must admit, these old vehicles had some great color. Had to wait for the sun to move to the west so I could shoot the shaded side. It was amazing how fast 4 hours went by. Jim

I spent some real time getting the RF adjusted but I am very happy with it now. The following 2 frames were both shot though the RF.

Can you remember what aperture you were using? Were you shooting handheld? Those pictures look like they have a lot of DOF, but whenever I go out with the speed graphic, I am always disappointed at my inability to get good DOF and still maintain the 1/60th or so that I need for handheld shooting.

There is almost nthing in this world I am anal about but this one thing; I take notes :):

both shots tripod using RF to focus and VF to set up shot

Shanghai 100@80
13min rodinal 1:50 for 12 min

top frame:
F32
meter = 40'
add repcropricty for total exposure 605'
focus point was the power steerign pressure hose on the right hand front of the frame. I should have grabbed a focus point furthur to the back of the frame to get all of the background in focus.

Bottom frame:
F32
meter = 13.5s
add repcropricty for total exposure 120'
focus point was the frame rear cross member in the center middle of the frame I am happy with the DOF but the very front gets soft. I did not even try to wrangle some sort of fake front rear tilt to get the very front sharp but, had I done so, the frotn should be as sharp as the rear.

What i learned from this series of 6 frames:

Trust the reprocitcy tables! I almost decided the 10min and 2 min exposure for frame were too long...nope; this is a straight scan with no messing with and the exposure is great.

even with small f stop placement of the focus point really makes a difference!

I have not done it with this graphic yet but I generally shoot 400 or 800 to keep the shutter speed high enough to hand hold.

They do indeed. On a ride to Southern France (From Denmark) back in 92 on my way North i hooked up with a girl on a Guzzi and I still remember the sound from her bike, it was very nice. I'm sure she was too but I never saw her without the helmet.

Could you please share what story you get from that photo: does it look like the driver was shot ?

I suspect that someone just shot that hole in the glass, after the truck had sat around for a long time.

I just made it for aesthetic reasons: shapes, textures, tones, ratios, etc.

It just tells me this truck has been exposed to a semi-severe outdoor environment for many many seasons, that's all. The surface rust, the delamination of the safety glass around the bullet hole, the pine needles in the wipers, all speak of abandonment and neglect for perhaps 50 - 60 years.

Why we are drawn to decay and neglect . . . I'll leave to the psycho-babblers.

Milosz's photograph also tells a story--at least for me. In some respects, if a detailed photo of the whole bike were the goal, it would be better if taken closer and in a horizontal format. But as it is, it tells a story about a bike meant for speed on the road being hemmed in by that fence in the rear. Even the fact the front wheel is slightly closer to the edge of the negative than the rear wheel speaks to me of eagerness to go fast.

This is a mid 40's Dodge that has been parked at Benton Hot Springs, CA in the high desert sun for some time..... no rust - and almost no paint on the south facing and horizontal surfaces. Those small bushes in front of the car are probably 20 + years old - it is safe to assume it hasn't been to a drive in movie for some time.... I made this image with a Rodenstock / Linhof Select 150mm lens on my Linhof 4x5. So I don't over tax my feeble brain I use only one film - Ilford FP4 plus - processed in HC-110 - dilution B -

http://www.lenbruffett.com/LFforum/dodge.jpg

Here is an image of my D90 mule overlooking the Owens Valley east of the Sierra Nevada- it is not that old ('97 Land Rover) - it is not vintage, but still picture worthy - I regularly shoot my images from the roof rack platform. I made this image of the truck while waiting for the light on the rocks directly behind my truck. This is the site where Ansel Adams made his image of a clearing summer rainstorm over Mt. Williamson and boulders.

Hi Jim,

I have driven by that unique granite formation many times - but never at the time of day when the lighting is what want. When I am in that region I am usually on my way to photograph the Montgomery Pass herd of wild horses. (there are usually 230 + horses in that herd). I photograph them early in the morning or late in the afternnoon. To photograph them I usually have to hike with them for a couple of hours or so with 25+ lbs of gear until they settle down and except my presence. Since I live at sea level hiking with gear is a little tougher in the thinner air at 7 to 8 thousand feet elevation of that region. It is a challenge to photograph them with my 4x5 on a tripod... when they settle down they are curious and will walk right up to me - which isn't what I am after . I have also lost many good images by simply moving my arm up to get to my cable release - they get spooked and run. I now use an old air driven cable release with my hands positioned by my side when I photograph them.

That region is really a target rich environment for images.... you are lucky to live so close to it.

Len

Beautifully seen and done. I think it's a pre-war custom. It may be based on a '36 ford. There was a guy in Bay Area Ca. who did these customs with Packard inspired grills. The softness works well with this. It trains your eye to the center and then you explore the rest.

I don't have any images to post yet, but I wanted to let viewers of this thread know about an outstanding classic car museum in Auburn, Indiana, that has a wonderful collection and is friendly toward photographers. This is the Auburn, Cord & Duesenberg Museum (automobilemuseum.org), which is in NE Indiana not too far from Fort Wayne. I stopped by there a couple of weeks ago on my way home from a photo trip to Michigan's UP and shoreline with Lake Michigan, and found that the collection is very well kept and presented, and they don't mind at all if you bring in more serious cameras with tripod (etc.). I used my MF Mamiya 7ii and a traveler's tripod, but if you really want to (and especially if you call ahead and speak to the staff to get their assistance) you could use LF gear. The main drawbacks are that the daylight coming through some of the windows on the ground floor (where some of the better Auburns, Cords and Duesenbergs are on display) is difficult to contend with on such shiny cars; while in other parts of the museum the high-intensity lighting (they're switching over to LED fixtures I was told) will also create some bright spots and starbursts in your films. Also, they use a system of 12-15 inch high molded concrete stanchions, with clothes line rope stretching between stanchions that are placed on the 4 corners of each car, as a simple and relatively unobtrusive means to keep people away from the cars just enough so they won't actually touch the cars. However, if you want to take any photos of the cars that need to have the lower parts of the wheels or chassis in the photo, then those rope barriers and stanchions will seriously compromise such photos. But you can ask the docents, who are mostly volunteer gentlemen of retirement age from the nearby community, to temporarily remove those ropes and stanchions - and they will do it if you ask. However, there are 120 cars on display, and so you'll need to be judicious about how many and often you ask for this special assistance to get the perfect shot. That said, if you are shooting compositions that don't include the portions of cars so low to the ground (e.g., radiators, hood ornaments, side and interior trim, etc.) then you can work along by yourself without relying on help from the docents. I was told that across the street from this Auburn, Cord & Duesenberg Museum there is a large exhibit of old trucks, muscle cars and other vehicles, but I didn't have time to get to that. 'Check it out....

Caterham 7s are among my all-time favorite cars, although perhaps it should be described more as a 4-wheel motorcycle than as a car (in terms of practicality!). I should have bought one when I lived in England in the 1970s, new Caterhams are very expensive in the U.S.

Hoffy: while we all respond to photographs differently, in this case, while I like both shots, I think "selective focus" works very well with the first (the rear view of those giant slicks), but less well with the second, the frontal view. In the second, it seems to me a perfect time to use front tilt to get the entire dragster, or at least up to the interesting engine block, in focus.

Thanks for your feedback Peter! I suppose for me, the first shot and the shots on that day, was about learning the basics of a 4x5. Everything was zeroed out with those shots. But, yes, I hear what you're saying.

BTW, there was a reason why I hadn't done close ups of the engine. The trumpets on top of the injection system were just poly pipes! The owner is still working on the car and had just brought it out for the day.

I tried some movements on the front standard to bring more of the side of the car in focus. I also shot wide open, just to see what would happen.

I am new to this, so I didn't expect the results I got! We have focus on the rear tyre, but loose focus on the tailights and focus slowly drifts away down the car. But the odd thing (for me) is the truck that you can just see on the right hand side of the image is very much in focus (I cropped most of it out - you can just see the bumper)! The truck was a good 10 metres away from the car.

I am very much encouraged by the results I got using the camera, but I still need to practice/work out the idiosyncrasies of using movements!

Cheers

Those photographing cars/trucks in LF, now that you have some big negatives, I think the subject is well suited to cyanotypes. I've got a few interspersed in this album (look for blue or brown photos). It's really exciting to create and sometimes works better than silver prints or scans.

Shinya is such an incredible talent. I hope to do more with him soon.

Here's one from last monday. Velvet light time. Yes that's me next to the Ford. A friend pushed the plunger for me. Lens was an 8 1/4 Velo that I modified to work like the bigger ones with the fuzz-u-lator.

Every year I attend the Annual Hot Rod Reunion in Bakersfield, CA to enjoy the sights and sounds of vintage cars, racing and speed. I am slowly getting caught up with processing these images. Here are two that were shot on the 1910 Auto Graflex SLR.

Thank you. Not that difficult, really. These were both shot hand held on a 4x5 Graflex SLR. Digital (gasp) post.

Thanks, Renato.

My wife is a Carioca - we spent a couple of months wandering around Rio, Parati, Ouro Preto, and Salvador in 1996. I took a lot of large format pictures but my hotel development was often less than successful (in extreme cases the emulsion fell off!), and the adapters I made to use film in holders made for glass weren't all focussed/ positioned correctly. Aye well, tudo bem!

Hi Neil,

If you happen to have more post it please!
That side of the country is a wonder to trip by: from Rio to Santos by the Atlantic Coast - Rio-Santos route.
I used to go several weekends by the year to Ubatuba, Parati and Angra dos Reis when living in Sao Paulo. There are several small bays and beaches by the road, that's a wonderful place to go in summer. Very phpto-friendly places, for sure,

Cheers,

Renato
