Not sure about the comparison to 35. Never have gotten into those types of details. I was shooting within arms length of them, because I talk with all of them....

Thanks Stone.... She looks pretty close to the same to me in both images. She was in full sun in the first, and open shade in the 2nd, and filled with off camera flash. Could have been the shutter speed between the two images though.

No worries here.

Actually, there is a lot of extra yellow light being reflected everywhere off those flowers. Probably the ambient color balance is quite different between those two images.

This is near a beach about 1/2 mile from my house. The light and dark and shapes were doing things for me, and I had my camera. Rolleiflex automat tessar, tmy2 film in pyrocat hd. Snow won't be around too much longer and I've got to shoot it while I can.

That already looks ancient! I'm not sure if it's the fonts, or the names (Wildhorse, USA Gold...), or the act of smoking itself, but it really does feel as if it's from another age.

And yet it was only taken a couple of weeks ago up near the Costco by the airport. Since I don't smoke I have no idea if these are good prices or not, but I was in line behind a guy at Safeway the other day who bought a pack of Marlboros for almost eight bucks! I shouldn't throw stones when you consider a single sheet of fresh 8x10 Kodak film is almost that much these days. Like with anything you can save money if you go with an off-brand product. (Yeah, Foma, I'm talkin' 'bout you.)

FOMA100 in 8x10 (Arista100Edu version of course) would be my second choice to any ilford film in 8x10, it's truly unique in a good way.

A carton of smokes was only $2.25 on base in 1967. How times have changed. I quit over 40 years ago, I should have put the amount spent for a cartoon of smokes in a can. I would have plenty by now. :(

So was this taken with any IR filter?

Also, the exposures was great, I'm drawn to the lake and the reflections of the trees on the left side in the background, did you end up taking any of that? It's very interesting...

No filtering at all. The sky was "foggy bright" which accounts for the look. I was also drawn to the lake, but more to the shadows created by the bushes in the lake, and the strings (pearls) of water hanging on the branches, as shown here. Unfortunately, hand holding the Hasselblad under those conditions resulted in "not quite what I had hoped for" in this shot.

I enjoyed the discussion about shapes Jonathan saw in my photo of my two girls, and of course I have to do something a little less subtle, but it's a nice mix of shapes and tones and continues the near-far relationship some too.

The ability to edit a post times out after a certain point. It frequently annoys me here and on APUG too, because I'm used to pilot forums where the ability to edit or delete your own post never goes away.

No problem as far as I'm concerned, just an observation. :) There is a good thread for color shots, digital shots, 35mm shots etc. in the safe haven thread.

At Birch Point Beach State Park near my house recently. (Rolleiflex automat tessar and tmy2)

The lines and shades remind me of music scales, with the tree trunks being the stems of notes and the rock chunks being notes. Of course the relationship between music and photography need not be so explicit.

Hi Rick,

A bit too contrasty for my taste. I would expect a lot of detail in the steps and shrubbery rather than solid black.

Just a suggestion.

I was out of VC paper at the time, and printed on some Kodabrome G5 that was sitting on the shelf. I plan on reprinting when my order of fresh paper arrives.

David; you're on to something good there. Keep at it. May I make an adjustment/suggestion?

More rocks and trees with the Rolleiflex at Birch Point Beach State park as Ken has documented in color. It's a sharp photo, but flickr seems to be going overboard in it's own sharpening.

I tried a curve to try to separate the background from the wildflowers a little more. The vertical line on the curve graph shows where the flower blossoms are. It's subjective. I'm not thrilled as I thought I'd be and it's simply another interpretation not necessarily better. When I was at point lobos, the day I was there, there was more shadows and drama amongst the mossy trees and undergrowth near the entrance and along the paths. I'd have needed several more visits to get it how I'd want it. I think to get the separation of the wildflowers, probably some thinner DOF variants of the photo or different lighting variants would be fun.

When I was at Point Lobos in 2012. I didn't even try to combine the vegetation and the mossy woods. I just shot the mossy woods, because it's a different style of moss than we have in the northeast here and it really stood out to me. Yashica-C tlr used here. I'd need several trips to shoot it the way I'd imagine it, but that's not happening. Here at home, I can revisit sites over and over and over till I refine what I'm after.

Yes it does. From my serial number search it looks like this Super Ikonta was 1937 production, definitely uncoated, and just a little hazy. After scanning this I took the back element out and think I got rid of at least some of the fog with naphtha. These guys go all out to keep the history alive. The officer in front owns the staff car, showed me his identity papers, pass to Paris etc., all original and brought back by his uncles as war souvenirs.

I like the fact that besides digital, I can use cameras of the same vintage to photograph the reenactors. The second one below was taken with the anniversary speed graphic/ Gundlach Petzval (from mid 20's I think), the bottom two from another Zeiss folder; a Netter Ikon with Novar lens also from 1937.

Wow, crazy, so how did you lower the contrast so much?
The first one was extremely flat lighting so I actually used a curve layer to increase the contrast. Opposite on the bottom one, used a "reversed" "S" curve. And, a confession, I overlapped two rolls on the spool so the 2nd had some damaged emulsion. So, I copied the left half, duped, dropped and flipped it.

Happy Days! I finally bit the bullet and took out all three lens groups to clean the fog/haze in my Super Ikonta C. Noting the point at which the front element left the threaded chase, it looks like somebody re-assembled it out of syn and the three screws holding the focus ring to the element were not aligned with the holes in the front element housing. I wondered where that back focusing was coming from!

Taking a roll to check focus wide open at 4.5 I now find it front focuses a little, but that's fine. This also gave me a chance to try my 1.3X auxiliary lens with this camera for the first time. Focusing on the eye socket at the closes point (~20") the maxilla and teeth are a little sharper. But I can live with this as it's a great improvement.

Ed's House of Gems, indeed. These painted crystals are on the back (east) side of the building. I've tried a few times to make a decent photo of the place. This one comes close, but I still feel like there is a great photo lurking in and around there just waiting to be taken. Whether that photo gets taken by me or by you or by persons unknown, time will tell. Any place plastered with the slogan, "Everything for the rock hound!" has gotta have something going for it.

Pursuant to a discussion elsewhere on the forum, this is one of those places that could be gone in the blink of an eye. It's been there a long time and doesn't show signs of closing, but all it would take is a really bad year or the death of the owner to send it over the edge, I would guess.

Pursuant to a discussion elsewhere on the forum, this is one of those places that could be gone in the blink of an eye. It's been there a long time and doesn't show signs of closing, but all it would take is a really bad year or the death of the owner to send it over the edge, I would guess.

J.

It will be gone in the blink of an eye, no doubt about it. I feel like I should go in there and buy something as it's given me a certain pleasure simply by way of its very existence. As far as future photographs go, I'm thinking one could move just a bit to the right of where you were, so that you'd have that great crystal sign and then the word "everything" next to it. Actually, now that I look at it again, those crystals make me think of a ruined city on fire (like a bunch of Washington monuments), so it would end up being a sort of prediction, or a statement on impermanence-ha!

Very nice; exciting composition and tones.

Thanks for that. I was generally happy with the composition. For me the power lines at the top mirror the cracks in the pavement below, and the half-door on the left mirrors the half-rectangular paint on the right. Not earth shattering, but I did put a little thought into it.

Jason, your comment above is a great example of why I like posting here. Just about everywhere else on the Web this image would be passed over with less than a one or two second glance. (And, to be honest, it's not the best thing I've ever done.) But here on this forum we can usually expect our fellow members to take a longer and more appreciative look at our work. It is that consideration, whether expressed or not, that keeps me coming back to both look at what's been posted and to post myself.

...now that I look at it again...

See, Austin, you're making my point!

I wanted to get the word "everything" in the frame but sometimes the 6x6 format does not lend itself to horizontal compositions. Time to go back for another try with the 6x9. Making a purchase there would indeed be good karma. My wife and I keep meaning to go in there just for the sake of saying that we did.

It's way easier to right click and view it on the gray background; the composition doesn't show nearly as much in the inline form. It only takes a second.

Thanks guys. The reflections were changing every second because of the motion of the water so it was kind of a guess as to what I would end up with. Actually, I almost ended up with a family of ducks in the picture as at this moment they were charging toward me!

Luc, because of time constraints, and honestly, money constraints, I always photograph more than I print, so I'm not sure if I'll explore this one further, but who knows? There are some pretty neat patterns going on with the spangles that are hard to see at this size; it might be interesting to make a larger print. In any case, I'm printing digitally these days on an Epson 3000, which does a good job. I'm currently making a sort of mock-up book using double-sided Hahnemuhle Photo Rag. It's not my first choice of paper for every image, but it's one I like a lot. Thanks again for the kind words.

I stayed here for a night recently during a family vacation. Interested in the juxtaposition of the church spire and the motel, I stepped back to make a picture, and in that moment my daughter popped out of our room and an unknown man strolled past the post, and what I ended up with was this vaguely sinister, Hopperesque scene. It happens sometimes.

I think it would be more accurate to say that the threads aren't grouped by B&W or color in general, but by subject matter. You will find color shots in many of the image sharing threads, not only in the small formats threads. There are any number of folks shooting large format color neg and positive - you just have to look.

Yet you still return to review the threads and comment, quite often by your post count. How ironic to enjoy something yet complain about it. You complain about the rules here, about the rules over there, why not just create your own website and then you can make the rules?

Two quick responses to the recent "discussions:"
1) I enjoy seeing all images, seeing what others do with situations, since it is all inspirational. So I think the "smaller format" threads are valuable, even in a primarily LF forum.
2) As pointed out, there are color photos in both the "smaller" and "larger" image threads. I think they are outnumbered simply because processing color film is problematic for many of us; I am very comfortable developing B&W sheet film, color "not so much" (in fact, "not at all"). Obviously color is easier with digital capture, so it is most common in the small format thread, and less common in the medium format thread, because digital MF cameras are very expensive.

Thanks for the kind thought, Marty.

Yes, the San Juans are full of opportunities: Anasazi ruins, ghost towns, mine ruins, trees, rocks, flowers, etc. However, I don't hike very far from the car any more.
