Nice shot! I have been in here a few times. The owner is very nice. It is a really interesting business, they restore and rebuild old pianos. The website is: http://www.immortalpiano.com

Tonality here is simply luscious!

Muchas Gracias Rich. There was a slight overcast that morning and I think it helped to flatten to contrast a tad and allow the subtle changes in tonality to become more visible. I hope that made sense?

Gorgeous work Rich. How did you meter this scene? The "glow" of the highlights on the rails creates a wonderful contrast to the darker tones and details of the railroad bed.

Thanks Jeff. An overcast/foggy day with brighter skies on the horizons, which is quite common for the Bay Area this time of year especially. Creates good consistency of light at least for an hour or so. I metered a nice patch of bright green grass over at the base of a nearby fence and used that reading. This works well for me in how I later develop.

While the sand dues shot was a tad too "grainy" for me (tongue firmly in cheek), these two images absolutely knock my socks off. Besides the wonderful aesthetics, I am in awe of your ability to "hand-hold" such low light compositions. Certainly beyond my skill set :)

Hi Jeff, thanks for the comments. My first few rolls developed using a recently acquired big 2553 Jobo tank and 2502 reels developing 6 rolls of 120 per session on a reversing Beseler motor base. Very pleased in my results as are my hands and arms from no more hand-rolling on a manual base for only 2 rolls per session in my 2521 tank!

I should have been more explicit perhaps in my descriptions as the Pananmint Springs image was on a tripod about 2 hours or so after sunset. Sky still had some minor light as can be seen but exposure was at least 30 seconds at F/5.6 or 8. The two trees and moon though was handheld however, after sunset but still decent light in the sky, might have been 1/30th of a second with a very steady hold. I rarely will shoot slower than 1/125th without a tripod but this was a rest stop area and the family was hungry for dinner, no time for the tripod!

Due to a bout with Sydenham's chorea (i.e. Saint Vitus Dance) as a youngster, my hands are unsteady and my Hasselblad is always on a tripod. Thus my awe for your handheld images.

Your description of the 2553 tank and reversing Beseler motor base really got my attention. I quickly tired of the hand-rolling my 2521 tank and went back to my beloved Nikor SS tanks. This sounds like something I could get excited about.

Frankly people who claim hand holding with no problem down to 1/15th or so (even with rangefinders) simply have lower standards in my opinion, and are not looking carefully at their results. "Acceptable" is rarely good enough in my book. Barry Thornton did an interesting test on shutter speeds and sharpness in one of this books, and I think that was even on a tripod! Results were quite interesting. I love Barry's books and re-read them often.

Threading and loading two 120 rolls on a 2502 reel is notoriously challenging. I got it down but only after reading some very confusing threads about it and trying dry runs 8-10 times. And even then not perfected until after 10 or so real attempts. No disasters thankfully. Now it's like falling off a log for me. I'm determined to make a nice comprehensive YouTube video on it as I've adapted many suggestions together and it works great for me now. But still, like many things in this hobby, with patience. Loading three reels with six rolls does take a good 8-10 min in the changing bag. But knocking out 6 rolls in a one shot and with only 700ml or so of developer is great. My backlog of undeveloped rolls is huge so this will help put a dent in that. Now my backlog of unscanned/unprinted developed rolls can grow!

Just a day at the beach with the family, in February in Maine. I had my camera because it goes for walks with me. The wind was strong and making the waves roll with extra energy. I could see my daughter's dark jacket might stand out nicely in a B&W photo, so to show the girls' enthusiasm for running around at the beach and the energy of the wind and ocean, I asked my youngest to raise her arms up into the wind like she wanted to take off.

Austin, those two photos go well together.

I took these one windy and damp afternoon thinking winter shooting was over for the season as our winter snowfall has been weak this year. (Winter made a comeback since then). We had a lot of wind damage over the winter this year due to lack of soil depth and lack of deeply frozen ground. Death precedes the season's new life was sort of the theme of the roll of film as I bemoaned the end of winter.

Thanks Rich, Jason, Roger. I can't resist a good wrapped building. Just the forms are interesting, but I like them too for their psychological component. Maybe it's just me, but the shrouds always remind me of death. Yeah, I'm a cheery guy... :-)

What are you trying to tell us Austin...

austin granger
8-Apr-2016, 12:06
Well Randy, I don't have an agenda really, but I am interested in these billboards, especially in how they seem to always be connected to what's around them, especially if given a little nudge with composition. I think the human mind is always searching for meaning, for patterns, and I'm interested in trying to show this tendency at work in my pictures. So to take the Fed Ex photo for example, but giving the two subjects (Jesus, the Fed Ex truck) equal weight, I'm telegraphing to the viewer that they are both meaningful, and further that they're connected, and then, hopefully, the picture becomes not just about one thing or the other, but about some idea common to them both. See, it's a picture about deliverance! Har har. Yes, through the magic of composition, we can make 1 + 1 = 3! At least, that's what I'm on about with these pictures.

Randy
8-Apr-2016, 13:21
Now what part of my question made you think that I was accusing you of having an agenda? Perhaps I was simply asking what message you were trying to impart. Or, perhaps I have seen enough of your work to know what message you were trying to impart, but I thought it would be funny to vaguely accuse you of trying to evangelize us :)
Actually, all you have succeeded in doing is make me want to drive all over the county looking for Jesus billboards.

austin granger
8-Apr-2016, 21:46
Ha, well if you're looking for Jesus billboards, come to Portland; they're everywhere around here lately. As for the evangelizing, I guess I'm a little sensitive that people might think it's the opposite; that I'm mocking religiosity or something, which isn't the case at all. Though I can't claim to be particularly religious, at least in the "ordinary" sense, I've always been sincerely interested in religious traditions and symbols and so on.

One thing for sure is that because people bring so much of their minds to their looking at pictures, it's often difficult to know how people are seeing your stuff. I think the best I can do is to continue to plow my own little furrow and hope that we meet somewhere in the middle. :-)

Since Austin brought up the Jesus theme, here's my entry from the Colville Radar Dome. I'm not sure if the local evangelicals have taken up paintballing, or if the paintballers have taken up religion, but the graphic style was striking. (It's at a former radar site on a mountain where paintballers have been active for several years.)

I used to paintball. We did teams in the thick woods. I enjoyed it but it sort of turned into an arms race for a while and I got out of it when other people were spending hundreds on accessories like carbon fiber airtanks and motorized hoppers.
Done right, it's the basics of adrenaline, exercise, hunt-or-be-hunted, strategy, being relaxed with the paintball gun aim/operation, harmless messy paint, etc..

But being alone at a snowy beach with a rolleiflex is quite enjoyable these days.

Chris, I used to build those old style traps with my dad in the 80's! Copper nails that wouldn't rust, handmade heads (nets) inside, etc.. They are heavier than other traps above water, but more buoyant underwater, both undesirable traits. Traps and gear make many photographic possibilities.

On a side note, did you change your scanning workflow recently? Particular curious to know if you are wet mounting your film now because the scans are super clean.

Thanks Pali. No, I haven't really changed anything - but I am curious what you mean by "clean?"

The writing on the border is really clean Bryan and that's what prompted me to make the clean comment. Usually the borders have some artifacts due to film holder or from the tape used to hold the negative but there is no sign of that here. That's why I thought this was a wet mount scan.

Corran
21-Apr-2016, 15:10
Ah I see, no I just like to have the borders sometimes. My scanner uses "hold down plates" of ANR plexi and so I can get the whole negative - but I often just crop to the relevant image area and/or mask off the negative to prevent stray light from leaking in. That said, some days when I'm just not on my game I overexpose the crap out of some negatives which make them a bit "rougher" looking, due to grain and such, so I thought you might've meant that.

I like this one. It's funny, when I looked at the picture I thought to myself - looks like southern CA - I lived outside of San Diego in Poway as a young boy back in the late '60's - early '70's. It just gave me a deja vu feeling as me and my friends would explore the hillsides all day long in the summer time.
Anyway, I clicked back and saw I was close on the location - thanks for taking me back.

This picture made me very nostalgic too. When I was a kid my grandparents lived in Walnut Creek and my grandfather used to take me hiking around there (Mt. Diablo I think). It's a good picture, and definitely succeeds at doing justice to a certain California landscape. Thanks Rich!

Just had a couple platinum/palladium printing sessions (environmental portraits), but also made a few pt/pd prints from some 2 1/4 negs. Working small really shifts how how I look at composition...I need to simplify the elements and not depend on detail to carry the image. You probably will be viewing these much larger than life, unless you shrink them down to actual size. They work much differently small. The paper surface, etc becomes much less dominate.

PS - these images were taken with platinum printing in mind (composition, exposure and development).

Thank you Austin and Randy for the comments and compliments. This does represent the California hills for sure. That's Mt. Diablo in the background horizon there. I had my office near this location for a year or so and some days just needed to get away at lunch time for some fresh air and quiet. As usual I hiked farther from the car than I should have and when I saw a decent-sized rock that could be a temporary chair I made use as I was a tad tired walking. Upon looking up I saw this nicely-textured bush sort of matched the horizon and being of lower perspective than usual I sort of liked how the grassy foreground and an open aperture gave a semi-3D look. You two are not the first to comment about childhood and nostalgia this photo evokes for people who grew up hiking the coastal hills of California. I think the low perspective might have helped trigger that low-down childhood viewpoint more than I realized when taking the photo!

Thanks Jeff. This one is actually located here in Oregon, near The Dalles if you know where that is. I have only photographed it once, but I'd love to see it in the snow. As for the Palouse, man, I think I could happily photograph there for the rest of my life. I visited there for the first time last November and had a really rewarding (though absolutely freezing) couple of days. I feel like I barely scratched the surface and am anxious to get back there as soon as possible. Some places just speak to you, and right away the Palouse hit me hard.

*I think my favorite thing about the above photograph is the crow on the chimney. I can't believe he landed there and stayed put while I took out my camera. I wish my luck was always so good!

Rich - The reflection image is a stunner. Took me a few moments to get oriented visually. I initially thought it was some type of double exposure. Those old neon signs are definitely a treasure. I've been slowly working on a similar project in the metro Phoenix area. Keep them coming sir.

Some really really terrific ones there. How many is your goal for the final cut?

For something like this I'd choose an initial group like you did, then get brutal and eliminate half. Then cut that group in half AGAIN. Then take a break without looking at the remaining ones at all. After a week or two, before going to your "final" ones, go back to those you eliminated in those two rounds and pick two that get to go back into the final group. But now find which two of the final group come out to let those two back in. It's an interesting exercise and forces you to be real brutal. Even better ask a couple or few people you trust/admire to do the same but don't share your final results until the very end. Then....only go with those that overlap for all of you.

austin granger
12-May-2016, 09:15
Thanks Rich. That's good advise. I have to laugh at you mentioning cutting the initial group in half, as I've done that a couple of times already. It's tough for sure. The thing grows and shrinks and mutates. There is always what I consider an essential group of pictures, but it's choosing the ones on the periphery, those sort of "B list" ones, that's hard. I find that those change not only over time, but also change depending on my mood; sometimes the selections get darker, other times more hopeful and so on. Which version of myself do I trust? :-) And then there's the issue of linking them all together-I want each picture to be related to the picture before it and after it and sometimes those links get tenuous, or else you might make a meaning that I hadn't really intended to make, where a picture becomes funny or disturbing because of what came before it and so on. Anyway, it's challenging for sure, but this is actually one of my favorite things about photography. I love gathering pictures together and seeing how they resonate off of each other, sometimes in unexpected ways. It's like trying to make a song. I'm riffing man! :-)

Now it's back to it. I'm trying to get it to a hundred or so. Hmmm. There sure are a lot of abandoned farmhouses in there, and what's with all the solitary trees? That's the other thing about this activity; it's a glimpse into one's own mind. Yikes!

Ha ha. What a great post. :-)

I personally dislike exactly what you like. I need to hire a curator or someone some day to help me organize and sort through my work because I seriously don't do well at that. I just love shooting and love seeing what I get. I love holding my many classic film cameras and admiring their workmanship and am in wonder at what they can produce. And love pushing myself to get better and better (in my eye alone). Sold two prints this week. I never market myself explicitly so it's out of the blue when I sell something (but happens just enough to please me). I like the money and the admiration but always get all emotionally balled up and stressed in the process of printing, matting, signing, framing, etc. (why would they want this? Is this really good enough to sell for that much?) For someone who's been in sales and quite successful at it most of my life (financial services) I'm awful at marketing myself and my photography, though I'd love to do a book or like I said, curate and organize my work someday.

Look forward to your book project. I'll buy the first one off the press.

Are you going to the TT?
Very sad to say, no, we went before the TT, because my wife needs to do some research there, and everything was booked and over budget for the month surrounding the TT. I looked into renting a bike, but the cost was high, and I decided to rent a car for three days of photography, rather than one day on a motorcycle. I did drive the course in my rented Fort Escort however, and I can tell you it is very impressive. People were clearly practicing while I was there, and one sport bike blew by me at very high speed.
Here's the Creg-Ny-Baa turn, where I had dinner in the famous pub (iPhone photo):

Thanks for your comment. Sorry for the delay, I only had my phone while abroad, and poor wifi. That was a scan, on Epson 4990, with some quick post in LR. I may make a wet print of this, after I get done developing 15 rolls of 120 I took on the trip.

Very nice David. I too like to take these "walk-around" photos. They seem semi-basic and fairly pedestrian now (and I do not mean that as a criticism!) but in 20-30 years (assuming we're around) we'll have wished we had taken more. Oh how I wish I had walked around back in the 70's and 80's more and made more typical photos of the streets and neighborhoods I lived. Even if just a tapestry of vines or view down the sidewalk. We need more "Monday morning in London" photos if you ask me.

I just developed and scanned some I did a week or two ago with my Rolleiflex 2.8 Planar and a roll of Tmax 400 just walking around downtown Oakland, California. Will post a few...

Chris,

Can we expect a color version in a month or so? Fruit of your labor.

Lovely photo with wonderful tonality, and an interesting juxtaposition of elements.

Strangely reminded me of an old one of mine from quite a few years ago. Emily, Ben and Amy on Mount Tamalpais. Rolleiflex 2.8E Planar, Ilford XP2:

I agree with Rich about your "Hydrant, Oregon" image Austin. In fact, I love the "wonderful tonalities" that are often present in both your and Rich's photographs. It is an attribute that eludes my photography; however, I continue to work to find those lovely tonalities here in southwest. Keep them coming gentlemen. Your inspiring this old fellow in Arizona on a regular basis :)

Thanks Folker. I took a look at your website, I especially liked the Scotland II series.
