Oh yes. Tripods are forbidden in all of Sicily's antiquities sites and they're red hot about it. This was supported on a chair back, the chair being sat on by the very helpful but unfortunately-being-watched-by-his-boss attendant. He was most sympathetic, but wouldn't let me put the tripod up.
That's why I have no photos from the Valley of the Temples; they wouldn't even allow the tripod in the area.

If you believe you can, or you believe you can't... you're right.
Indeed the tripod is not necessary to get an image. It is, however, necessary *to me* to get the images that *I* want.
