Thanks for posting this! Deborah Willis, one of the authors of the book, was a juror for one of our exhibitions: http://www.neworleansphotoalliance.o...ions.php?id=18. From her book, "Reflections in Black: A History of Black Photographers - 1840 to the Present," I learned that the first daguerreotypist in New Orleans was a freeman of color named Jules Lion, who learned the process from Daguerre himself. http://knowla.org/entry.php?rec=481. No known plates by him exist. She's a great scholar on the subject of African-American photography.
