Center column info for an older series 2 Gitzo?

I have an alloy Gitzo G220 tripod that has a two-stage rapid column. I really don't need that second stage of the column at all and would rather just swap the whole thing for a normal rapid column, but I can't find info on what column would fit. Does anyone know where to find the dimensions of current or prior model columns? I need one that is 28mm in diameter.

I already emailed Gitzo, but their response was four words long and completely unhelpful.

Still looking, but it looks like the Giottos short center column MT C 281 is 28mm diameter and might work. At $22 I might try it, but will keep looking for alternatives.

I searched for the specifications for an old Gitzo tripod a couple months ago and found a web site which had many pdf files. I'm not certain this is the same one but it has quite a few: http://www.outdoorphotogear.com/stor...chematics.html

You can find part nos. then if necessary search for info on the part nos.

    Good luck,

Regardless of the issue at hand, that's definitely a very handy page. Thanks!

Re: Center column info for an older series 2 Gitzo?

Finally a bit of follow-up. Today I received the Giottos center column I ordered on Saturday. It turns out to be a perfect fit and a perfect solution for me. Shorter, lighter, simpler, and with a slightly smaller platform that's actually appropriately sized to the ball head that's usually on that tripod. Plus it was only $18 plus shipping! It should also match nicely with the Induro PHQ1 I've got coming later in the week. So, in bold type for people scanning this hastily in the future:

The Giottos MTC 281 column fits the Gitzo G220 perfectly.

I can supply photos tomorrow if people are interested.

Glad to hear it worked out. For the record another option would have been to do awway the center column completely with a Markins tripod base.

This is an older model that wouldn't have worked with the Markins base, but eventually I do want to pick up a GT-2531 and use it with the Markins hub.
