A fisherwoman. Batu Karas, West Java. Christmas 2011

Running out of film then, so I started shooting half sheets of 4x5. This one was shot with a 6.5" projection petzval wide open (about f3.5), and a cardboard shutter. Not sure why it is so grainy, but I was developing in closets with home-brewed D23, and the scope for mistakes was large. Focus is on her shoulder instead of her face, but I kind of like it anyway.

I see your wife is similarily focused. Could this be the difference of chemical focus?

    Re: February 2012 portraits

Well, I think I know the problem. I'm 53. Today I was messing about with my camera and grabbed my wife's reading glasses and all of a sudden the ground glass was much brighter and focused! My guess is that in both cases I focused on what I could see best, although I always try for the eyes. In future it seems I'll have to wear glasses...

By the way, what is chemical focus?
